How do you keep you wide legs jeans from becoming mops?

I love my wide legs jeans - I look and feel great in them... however, as soon as we get into the rainy season, I can't wear them as they basically just mop up all the rain. I've been caught out in the rain with them a few times and they end up weighing a tonne with all that water they manage to soak up haha. So now I wear my one pair of skinny jeans for most of the Autumn/winter, but hate how they're not 'me' and don't really go with most of my wardrobe.

Has anyone got a solution that has worked for them or will it just be a case of sucking it up (no pun intended) and wearing skinnies?

This was a big problem the first time round too 😁

We used to just go round with a tide mark somewhere below the knee! They are honestly very impractical as far as jeans go...

SnapdragonToadflax · 23/09/2024 15:00

I think you just learn to live with damp legs? Certainly was the case 20 years ago 😂

I wear skinnies on rainy days. Sod fashion.

Yes this does indeed remind me of the 1990s and wearing very soggy Joe Bloggs jeans Grin

Haha, I respect those who are committed to fashion but the damp heavy legs are too uncomfortable for me! I think it will have to be skinnies for the next 6 months...

Just hoping someone will come along with news of an invention like wide leg jeans that can be transformed into skinnies with the touch of a button for it rains 😂

I have been thinking about this too. Memories of wet ankles…

I saw a woman at the weekend in wide leg barrel type jeans who had just rolled them up above her boots. It looked quite good.

I might try this although I suppose it depends on the shape of the jean.

Drivingoverlemons · 23/09/2024 15:27

Soggy jeans and wet, really impractical shoes - the height of 90s fashion.

I wear M&S Lily jeans or girlfriend jeans, or leggings most of the time. I agree that wide legged jeans and trousers look lovely when dressing 'up'.

BlackStarryNight · 23/09/2024 15:31

It's the length that makes them soak up water isn't it? Get slightly shorter ones that still come all the way down to touching the top of the shoe but have an inch or two above the ground at the back?

PiggieWig · 23/09/2024 15:33

Platform trainers lift you out of the puddles a bit. Beyond that, you just have to live with the calf slapping I’m afraid…

TianasBayou · 23/09/2024 15:33

Create a fold in the back above your heel and fasten with a safety pin from the inside. This will lift the fabric off the floor.

Google wide leg jeans safety pin hack.

Oh yes, like Baby Spice circa 1998? The 90s truly are back 😂 Sadly my 43 year old ankles won't cope with the platform trainers I used to wear...

That's what I thought too but I've got a pair that are basically denim culottes and it's the same thing - I think it's to do with the slanting angle of the rain when it falls catching the flapping hems and there being more fabric in general iyswim

I think this time around the fashion is to wear them a bit shorter?

MichaelAndEagle · 23/09/2024 15:44

You could go for a boyfriend or mom jean and roll them up slightly with an ankle boot? Not wide leg, but winter alternative to skinny?
Something like this?

I do like the idea of experimenting with tucking the hems into boots - maybe this and the safety pin combination might work...

Complete aside - barrel jeans are a step too far for me in general - I've got an image in my head of them soaking up so much rain they are literally look like water barrels 😂 they just make me think of Henry 8th 😂

Calf slapping made me laugh too hard.

That brings back very vivid memories

Heeled boots? Lift them off the floor a bit. I went and bought a few pairs but I’m yet to wear them as the 90s wet memories are coming back to haunt me. I wore a pair of wide leg, teal jersey trousers last weekend and the bottoms got damp and I didn’t realise, they dyed the white fluff of my new slippers a lovely teal colour when I got home!

I’ve seen many worn this way with ballet flats / small kitten heels

Oh now I remember! You need chunky heels! You need.... Steve Maddens!!!

I've come across this article on how to wear the mega hemmed trousers that are now in fashion. It's not really helpful, but looking at some of the pictures, who on earth is really wearing trousers that long in real life?!!

Thanks for this - I have been looking for a pair of this style for ages, but find the mom/boyfriend jeans really unflattering as I'm a hourglass. They make my hips and thighs barrel outwards because of my curves.

Years ago I bought a pair of girlfriend jeans from H&M (I have no idea why they were called this but they basically fit on my body like the one in your image). They wore out at the thighs and I've just not been able to find anything remotely like them again, so need to resume that hunt...

Incidentally if anyone know why there are called girlfriend jeans, please do let me know as I've always wondered.

Apparently it’s to do with the side the button is on - boyfriend jeans fasten the ‘mens’ way and girlfriend the ‘womens’ way both are a slouchy style.
Back in the 90’s I had an emo friend who used to spray hairspray round the bottom couple of centimetres of her incredibly long wide jeans to stop them soaking up the water and it worked for her! Disclaimer that I have never tried this…
