How do you keep you wide legs jeans from becoming mops?

I love my wide legs jeans - I look and feel great in them... however, as soon as we get into the rainy season, I can't wear them as they basically just mop up all the rain. I've been caught out in the rain with them a few times and they end up weighing a tonne with all that water they manage to soak up haha. So now I wear my one pair of skinny jeans for most of the Autumn/winter, but hate how they're not 'me' and don't really go with most of my wardrobe.

Has anyone got a solution that has worked for them or will it just be a case of sucking it up (no pun intended) and wearing skinnies?

Thanks so much, that's mega interesting and I had no idea... I remember initially trying to follow the logic of boyfriend jeans being about the idea of you wearing your boyfriend's jeans and then applying it to girlfriend jeans. It didn't follow through so I forgot all about trying to understand it 😂

@Ineedanewsofa could you spray the bottoms with waterproofing spray for tents/jackets? Maybe do a patch test on a cheap pair? Does it leave a film?

I was walking the dog today in my soaking wet, not quite waterproof rain coat and (fondly) remembering walking to sixth form in my massive flares and being soaking wet and uncomfortable all day.

It's the length that makes them soak up water isn't it? Get slightly shorter ones that still come all the way down to touching the top of the shoe but have an inch or two above the ground at the back?

This!

Arafon · 23/09/2024 16:28

Mine are slightly shorter. I prefer then that way

BamberGirl · 23/09/2024 16:28

I hate trousers that drag on the ground…surely you are wafting your hemline though all sorts of shite (literally!).

Thanks for this - I have been looking for a pair of this style for ages, but find the mom/boyfriend jeans really unflattering as I'm a hourglass. They make my hips and thighs barrel outwards because of my curves.

Years ago I bought a pair of girlfriend jeans from H&M (I have no idea why they were called this but they basically fit on my body like the one in your image). They wore out at the thighs and I've just not been able to find anything remotely like them again, so need to resume that hunt...

Incidentally if anyone know why there are called girlfriend jeans, please do let me know as I've always wondered.

Perhaps when you roll up a mom jean you reduce the tapered effect?
A straight leg would probably work.

I have been thinking about this too. Memories of wet ankles…

I saw a woman at the weekend in wide leg barrel type jeans who had just rolled them up above her boots. It looked quite good.

I might try this although I suppose it depends on the shape of the jean.

I think that's where I'll head next.
Trouble is, I'm a bit barrel shaped anyway, and the barrel legs might just be the clincher for creating a giant baguette-woman silhouette, especially if I hoik them up over my belly button 🤔
Also looking for some longer length boots so I can roll my trousers up and not have my cankles out 😬
I remember my trousers being like litmus paper in the 90's and early 2000's!

It’s a problem when you lower your wide legged trousers to sit in public loos, as there is often wet on the floor…

fluffiphlox · 23/09/2024 19:24

Never mind the Nineties, this was a problem in the Seventies.

This was a big problem the first time round too 😁

We used to just go round with a tide mark somewhere below the knee! They are honestly very impractical as far as jeans go...

Edited

I literally saw the thread title and thought “well we didn’t manage it in the 90s!”

Platforms or wedges can help OP, but I tend to save them for dryer days tbh. I do have a pair of cropped wide leg jeans that I wear with boots or high top trainers on wet days, that looks quite good and stays dry.

This. Last time around mine used to be so long that it was easy to get them stuck under your heel. Just don’t do that!

snowwhat · 23/09/2024 20:54

It's not just the length though as my cropped wide leg jeans all get drenched at the bottom when it rains - it seems to be about the amount of fabric flapping around instead

TheOGCCL · 23/09/2024 21:53

I think this is why skinnies are never actually going to go anywhere.

Clearly if fabric is going close to (wet) ground it's getting wet so I think the only option is to roll/turn them up or wear them cropped with boots or high top trainers.

forevernumb · 24/09/2024 00:46

Yup this was a problem in the 1970s too 😂

sangriaandsunshine · 24/09/2024 01:10

I am wearing mine with heeled cowboy boots as then additional height at least lifts the hem of the floor. I will move to wearing them with my knee high boots soon as then there is a protective layer of boot between the sodden jeans and my skin

henlake7 · 24/09/2024 09:12

Not sure why they have to be so very, very long either. Im 5'5 (so the average height for a women in the UK) and I often have to buy ankle grazers or petite sizes just so Im not tripping on my trouser hems!
I swear some clothing companies measure their short, medium and tall sizes with models (or professional basketball players).

My answer to this though is parachute pants! I have plenty in nice thick winter fabrics and with a pair of chunky boots Im all set!
