I loved what she wore, and she looked so comfortable!
I wouldn't call it a style, or remotely fashion conscious, but she was obviously interested in clothes, if that makes sense?

She was 65+ or thereabouts, medium height, slim, with bushy hair in a lovely twist. She was wearing a long tweed, flecked coat, with a sort of jersey tunic under it with a modest pattern. She wore dark wool tights with socks and clumpy brown boots, with a cotton tote and gorgeous mustard coloured wool scarf.

I remember thinking that I rarely saw older women in shorter skirts/tunics, and she looked fantastic. What struck me most was how at ease this all looked, so kind of interesting but comfy. It did not scream money, but wasn't cheap at all, it is hard to describe it, as it wasn't on trend for any age group, but reminded me a little of a dance tutor I had in my 20's who was vaguely bohemian in a neater, relaxed sort of way (not trendy or frilly).

If any of this makes sense, I would love some recommendations. It all looked great quality but not in popular styles. The tunic looked like basic jersey with a scoop neck, wasn't baggy or tight. Colours were mixed but not obvious.
This was in March this year and I still haven't forgotten her!

On the tube the other week there was a lady early sixties I would guess with a fab pair of DM's. I thought I must get myself a pair then I found out how much they cost. So maybe I won't. 😀

I came across a brand new pair of DMs in my size still in the box for £8 in a big charity shop 2yrs ago.I’ve pretty much worn them most days since.Never walk past a charity shop😂

HanaLeigh · 21/09/2024 18:54

Loads of this type of tunic on Vinted, probably from when we were all wearing such an outfit. Have a search, especially by good brands.

StoneTheCrone · 21/09/2024 18:54

I have older friends and relatives (60+) who dress like this. One went to Oxford, another to Durham. The third was a lecturer at Sheffield. They all live in Yorkshire now.

I'd describe them as left-leaning artsy intellectuals. 😊 Theyre more interested in quality, texture and colour than what's in fashion, plus, theyre all thin/petite, so cant do long skirts. They all look fabulous and individually stylish. I feel like a garish giant next to them. 🤣

AubrieDog · 21/09/2024 18:57

It sounds like Toast style to me.

Sorry if this has already been said.

StinkerTroll · 21/09/2024 18:59

Saw someone wearing a hot pink ballerina skirt yesterday, it looked amazing (I absolutely HATE pink normally consequently it made a big impression on me), I told them it was fabulous

Crikeyalmighty · 21/09/2024 19:02

Ha I am 62 and dress a lot like that - a lot of above knew tunics with good leggings, scarves and coats or my black denim jacket - plus lace up boots

An aunt of mine is in her 60s and has a subtle gothy vibe and dresses in very flattering but stylish clothes. I know this is a brand she wears.😀🕷

I anticipated a few snotty digs about tunics. It's Saturday and I am sure that a few corks have already come out of the bottle a trifle early.. Grin

Horrible! I recall a lady I saw at a hospital where a reltive was very ill. Tall, older lady wonderful outfit. Freezing cold January day. Grey woolen skirt and top, plaid scarf. Looked amazing.

In my suburb recently a lady in black and red, fabulous bob cut.

Surely you have seen a reincarnation of Margaret Rutherford?

Saw some gorgeous dark green suede ones the other day, then thought about the weather...

I just bought some brown suede ones on Vinted, I’ll literally be going from car into work, so hopefully won’t wreck them.

In your opinion, nobody is forcing you to buy it. The ops taste was made clear in her first post.

I know several women who are just effortlessly chic. In a kind of 'young', gamine, easy, free and naturally elegant way. No matter their age.

Like you can imagine them dressing and just being very similar from if they were twenty to now (60s/70s). Not really following fashion or trends too strongly, not using lots of makeup, but still looking current. With their own unique style.

I really wish people, well, other women, look at me that way now and when I'm older but I doubt they do. I can dream!

But I know exactly what you mean. She sounds like she looks fantastic.

I have one that I adore just wish it was a different colour. I love the way it wafts about as I march through town.
Have a look on ebay for ex House of Bruar or such.

I really want a long tweed coat now, can you link me any, when I have looked they all seem black but I remember tweed being more brown than black (I am fast approaching 60 and aspire to be that woman on the train :) On a serious note I would love a tweed coat in reality so any links appreciated

Thanks Instant, It wasn't at all lagenlook, I forgot to mention that.
Nothing was baggy or floaty, it was more akin to slightly rural, or what i recall tree hugging intellectual types wearing in the 90's Grin

I wish I could find a photo reference!

Gudrun isn't necessarily "all lagenlook". They do tend to style their models in bigger sizes to look baggy and floaty but I have perfectly regular sized clothing from there and people alter it to be more fitted as well. And we don't always wear it with 97 layers of clashing items!! Dress I've had on today could be high street. (I do sometimes style it with extra layers but not today!)

Pupinskipops · 21/09/2024 19:48

Seasalt? White Stuff? Joules?

Thistooshallpass24 · 21/09/2024 19:48

Toast often have fabulous Tweedy fabric the colours they use are slightly sparky like a ginger brown, with moss green , you can usually spot Toast by the clever use of colours
Whistles used to great quality and good boots

SpanielPaws · 21/09/2024 20:04

I had a client in at work the other day - she was so well dressed, she had a long White Stuff tunic/dress on with really thick wool tights, chunky chelsea boots and a very beautiful wool scarf she said was from Liberty and she'd had for nearly 30 years. She then confessed to being 79 Shock I honestly thought she was late 50s.

DreamTheMoors · 21/09/2024 20:19

You’re describing an artist friend of mine almost to a tee.
She was also an architect.
She had excellent taste and no matter what she wore it always looked elegant and put together.
I’m sure if I put on an identical outfit I’d never come close to looking as put together and classy as she did.
Some women just have that, that look.

Thanks for pointing out that nobody is forcing me to buy things......fancy that!

I foud the OP interesting and that particular link disappointing.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 21/09/2024 20:25

Oh, really, not if you’re over 60, as I am.

Papyrophile · 21/09/2024 20:27

I love clothes, and have been "curating" my choices for over 40 years. I am still [not quite] the same size as I was in my early 30s, so I have an "archive" to dip back into. But I still buy new and pre-loved and the occasional charity shop item.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 21/09/2024 20:27

We wear what we like, and give no thought one way or another to how "modest" it may seem to others. One of the benefits of aging!
