Good moisturiser for over 60's cheapskate?

Good evening! I am not convinced expensive skincare products are miracle workers after reading that a big percentage of the price is due to cost of packaging and marketing. Last year I invested in mid price popular Number 7 Protect and Perfect range Anti wrinkle and saw no difference at all. Mainly use Aldi and Simple these days. Happy to pay more for products that work eg Clinique Lashpower mascara is my favourite mascara of all time. Which moisturiser is your go to? And any recommendations for skin primer and under eye concealer please?

Currently using Nivea, the one in the blue tub. It makes my face really shiny so only use at night but so far it’s doing a cracking job having replaced a much more expensive night cream.

Hopeandmoss · 20/09/2024 19:59

Having tried many many things in desperation I am currently using old fashioned Olay (the big bottle one). It’s brilliant! Moisturising, my skin is glowing and no annoying pilling !

AdultChildQuestion · 20/09/2024 20:00

I think the Avon Anew range is good. Often on offer at Superdrug online.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 20/09/2024 20:03

I got a vitamin c moisturiser from Primark recently as I was running out but I was ill and in hospital this summer and was bought Nivea moisturiser in a tube and Simple in a bottle. They both I originally thought wouldn’t be moisturising enough but they’re fine. I add vitamin c serum and SPF 50 on top. Night time I was bought an Olay anti ageing one which is good when used in conjunction with retinol.

Save your money on the Clinique mascara - I bought Elf Lash Xtendr recently. It's a tubing mascara. I swam in it in wavey sea, partied in it and slept in it and it didn't budge. I'm over 50 and was well impressed.

I like L'Oréal rosy glow. Prices do vary so I shop around

Add Golden Age before Rosy Glow and you’ll get more Google hits.

My mum really likes this day and night cream combo at 83.

I’ve heard people say good and bad things about anti aging moisturisers and the range of them from cheap to very expensive. If it suits your skin and wallet be you rich or poor then anything is better than eg nothing though I know several men who do not use moisturiser.

WinterFrog · 20/09/2024 20:22

I don't know any men who use moisturiser @Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain Or none that admit to it anyway.

@Azuresky68 I like the L'Oréal day creams with sunscreen and I use nivea at night. I used to work as a carer and a lot of very elderly women I met swore by it ( and had lovely skin to prove it) I love the smell too as it reminds me of my grandmother who used it.

halava · 20/09/2024 20:28

Go over to the Nivea Soft thread and see how many of all ages just LOVE that stuff, including me!

However, they have changed the formula recently to vegan and it is not the same anymore. So sad 😥I have a stash of the old version but am trying the Nivea blue at night and Nivea Day cream (with SPF) to see if they are ok as an alternative when my Nivea Soft stash runs out and they are great.

Crochetmeanewone · 20/09/2024 20:31

I love Lidl and Aldi skincare. I buy the day creams and occasionally night creams from there

GettingStuffed · 20/09/2024 21:01

Same age here, Cien one in a brown tub for day

GettingStuffed · 20/09/2024 21:02

Cien matureage (I think) it's in a brown tub, it's really thick but absorbs well and Nivea Q10 night cream for nights.

justasking111 · 20/09/2024 21:06

My mother used Ponds cream day and night her skin was beautiful.

My granny made her own with lard boiled in water, cooled and skimmed three times then rose oil added.

3LittlePiggs · 20/09/2024 21:15

I've been on the Nivea blue for a couple of months and my skin is looking good. I use it at night and also sometimes in day if I'm just at home (bit greasy to be out in public)

I've started using a toner as well, I dropped that step years ago, but as I only swipe with micellar water to cleanse I think this is a quick way to really cleanse.

I'm 55.

Another vote for Nivea Soft.
White tub, about £6...really excellent.
Apparently it has many of the same ingredients as La Mer. I can't vouch for that, but my over 60 skin loves it.

Azuresky68 · 20/09/2024 21:31

Thanks so much for all the helpful replies. Will definitely try the tubing mascara suggested. Just need a good primer and under eye concealer now please 🙏

I use Johnson's baby lotion as a cleanser the rinse it off and it makes my face feel nice.
Not that bothered about moisturiser. Boots, Aldi or Lidl seem great for the price.
Nivea soft is great.

Azuresky68 · 20/09/2024 21:35

@WinterFrog my other half uses Nivea daily to moisturise his face. After seeing all the recommendations for Nivea here guess I can pinch his 👍

My mother (91) bought me the one she uses for Christmas last year as her skin's lovely - Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream. It's brilliant - really light and lasts for ages. I bought myself another tub with the SF30.

It's not the cheapest but reasonable.

TigerDroveAgain · 20/09/2024 21:40

I'm a similar age: I had rather sensitive skin on my cheekbones and someone on here put me onto Child's Farm. massive tube of moisturiser: £4.50, skin perfect, lovely under foundation

AuntieMarys · 20/09/2024 21:40

Cerave with SPF 50

JennyfromtheBlok · 20/09/2024 21:43

Nivea Soft. - love the stuff. Have a tube or tub in all my bags and around the house. The whole family use it.

But I don’t like Nivea night cream. Feels to thick and sticky and not moisturising at all

user1471867483 · 20/09/2024 21:59

Palmer's cocoa butter (tub) the best (for me anyway).
