How do you keep your heels from getting dry/ cracked?!

greenleaveseverywhere · 20/09/2024 07:00

I go for a pedi every 6 weeks and when I leave they feel pretty smooth but within days they are all hard and cracked again!!

Not really doing anything in between my pedis. Wondering if you can recommend any lotions/ potions?

What is your foot care routine?!

Use foot cream? I also have an electric foot file, but I don't go for pedicures anymore since one caused my a wound so deep I couldn't wear a shoe had to have it dressed at hospital and took months to heal

AuntieJoyce · 20/09/2024 07:04

I just use a foot file and a foot cream every couple of days when I get out of the shower. My current foot cream literally only cost a pound. You are looking for urea as the main ingredient as that will tackle the hard skin

dryshampooer · 20/09/2024 07:05

Agree you need a foot cream with a high urea content. I like Flexitol heel balm.

PoachesPeaches · 20/09/2024 07:11

Flexitol! Works in about 4-5 days. You have to use it daily to keep on top of it.

PoachesPeaches · 20/09/2024 07:12

Other cheaper brands available. Agree its the urea content.

Cornishmumofone · 20/09/2024 07:16

It may also be partly down to the shoes and socks that you wear. Wearing shoes that don't fit your heel well, and have hard insoles, and not wearing socks made of natural materials will make your heels crack.

Arielsmummy · 20/09/2024 07:18

Soap and Glory do a very good foot cream, and Flexitol. I apply 4 times a week and file myself inbetween pedis

ParadiseLaundry · 20/09/2024 07:23

I use the cheap foot cream from Savers, £1. There are a few but it's the one with urea listed high on the list. After a bath a slather my feet in it and put plastic bags on for at least an hour. I try to do this several times a week, it's made a massive difference and my feet have been soft all summer.

MouseofCommons · 20/09/2024 07:25

I've never had cracked heels and never used cream. I'm 50, is this going to happen as I get older?
I live in trainers or bare feet though.

StolenChanel · 20/09/2024 07:25

I moisturise top to toe after every bath/shower/swim. No particular foot cream, just a whole body cream that I use everywhere from the neck down. I’ve never had dry or cracked heels.

LikeWeUsedToBe · 20/09/2024 07:35

Take baths not showers after soaking really scrub your heel.

I didn't either till I hit about 55....now it's flexitol when I remember.....

RancidRuby · 20/09/2024 07:55

I file mine regularly and also wipe them with glycolic acid a couple of times a week, this seems keep the dry skin at bay.

GameOfJones · 20/09/2024 08:01

I have reasonably soft feet. My routine is:

Once or twice per week I exfoliate in the bath or shower all over but including my feet. I just use those scrubby gloves.

Once a week I use a foot file after a bath.

At least three times a week I put Flexitol heel balm on my feet then put socks on over the top. I normally do it in the evening when I'm watching TV.

Then in the spring/summer I get a pedicure every 6 weeks just to make sure my toenails are pretty etc as my feet are on show in sandals.

That seems to keep any dry skin at bay.

AuntieJoyce · 20/09/2024 08:23

That’s the one I use @ParadiseLaundry Grin

I think some people are just prone to dry feet rather than others.

I live in flip-flops around the house so that’s my problem.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 20/09/2024 10:59

Nothing works as well as Scholl cracked heel balm in my experience.

I also love my ped egg for when I have let it get too bad

learieonthewildmoor · 20/09/2024 12:36

Pumice stone in the shower and body moisturiser after my shower.

peachgreen · 20/09/2024 12:39

I moisturise my feet every day and have done since I was in my early teens. They are super soft and I don’t have any hard skin. But it does mean that I get blisters really easily and can only wear certain shoes.

This BEZOX 2in1 Nano-Glass Foot File... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CZPYTP1D?ref=ppxpoppmobappshare

And the body shop peppermint foot cream is what I use between pedicures. I get cracked skin really quickly without it.

Chemenger · 20/09/2024 12:41

I suspect this might be something that some people are just more susceptible to. I’m in my 60’s and have never had cracked heels. I never moisturise my feet. I just wash them in the shower and dry them. Very occasionally I deal with hard skin with a file thing.

Fifthtimelucky · 20/09/2024 12:59

I only get dry skin on my feet in the summer, when I live in open sandals. They're fine when I wear socks and shoes.

When they get bad, I give them an intensive moisturise before bed using lots of hand cream (usually Neutrogena but I am using a tin of Burts Bees at the moment) and cover them up in socks, to stop the cream rubbing off on the sheets.

After three or four nights they are back to normal.

spikeandbuffy · 20/09/2024 13:08

I use foot cream every single night

Cheeesus · 20/09/2024 13:12

I’m guessing that you’re getting a cosmetic pedicure rather than hard skin removal. So your feet feel smooth, but it’s just superficial and you’ve got hard skin that you need to remove. I like a foot file like this. It’s like a cheese grater.

I first got cracked heels when pregnant with DD in my early 20s andits never gone away.

It's very common if you wear sandals/fli flops / barefeet as the fat pad spreads out on your heal, when contained in a shoe with a back it doest happen.

I find Flexitol is the only cream that helps and it's not particularly expensive. I apply at night and put socks on top.

Lurkingandlearning · 20/09/2024 13:47

Foot file and almond or argan oil
