Fleece jacket for kids, how are they supposed to wear them?

I love this type of fleece jacked for DC but I don't quite get how they are supposed to be used... they seem to heavy to be used under a coat but too light to be used as outwear so I am thinking they can only work in the mid-season as a light jacket? How does everyone use them?

If you live in a cold house they’re everyday indoor wear.

DYIDIY · 11/09/2024 13:16

@Storytimetime no, our place isn't very cold actually

You can treat them like 3in1 jacket type ones. So fleece and then a light rain coat over the top

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 11/09/2024 13:17

That's the kind of thing we would wear if it was fairly mild, and not raining.

With a long sleeved top underneath it wouldn't feel cold - unless it was proper winter temps.

Acunningruse · 11/09/2024 13:23

Yes- on a dry dsy day in April or September when you need "something" but not a proper coat. I didn't bother for DC as we live in an area with a lot of rain. Instead we get the softshell jackets from Mountain Warehouse.

FuckThePoPo · 11/09/2024 13:25

Blimey i can't believe you're asking this question 😂

User500000000023 · 11/09/2024 16:49

my son wears these under raincoats/ soft jackets. Depending how thick they are also on colder days in the winter under a normal coat.

DYIDIY · 11/09/2024 17:30

@FuckThePoPo why? It’s a weird tickness foe a jacket and I have never had one like this so I want to understand if I’d use it a lot or twice a year before spending £40 on it.

I'm currently considering this one too! We would wear it a lot for forest school now, then under a gilet and then under a ski jacket.

I think they're ok to wear in a car seat too so good for the school run x

spikeandbuffy · 11/09/2024 19:47

I actually have similar type for the stables (minus the pattern!)
I wear them when it's dry but colder with a t shirt or long sleeve top. Basically treat it as a sweatshirt or jumper

NerrSnerr · 11/09/2024 19:49

When it's not cold enough for a big coat and it's not raining. Also useful for an extra layer if out in freezing cold in January/ February time.

2chocolateoranges · 11/09/2024 19:51

Id use it as a cosy jacket on its own in the autumn and then use it under a waterproof jacket in the winter.

InTheRainOnATrain · 11/09/2024 19:51

Mine have similar fleeces but as a midlayer for skiing and then I pack them away with the salopettes etc when we get back because I agree with you that they’re too heavy/bulky to go under a coat but not warm/waterproof enough to be much use on their own. Probably depends where you live though. Might be good if you live somewhere colder than London!

Caterina99 · 11/09/2024 20:11

We basically wear them like a jumper/hoody. Or even on top of a jumper if it’s not really coat weather. The good thing is they add warmth without major bulk.

So no it’s not a winter coat, it’s more like a spring/autumn dry day wear. Or a layer under a coat in proper cold weather.

Probably depends on where you live and your lifestyle!

Mumofoneandone · 11/09/2024 22:36

Can always have a raid on eBay or similar - see how useful they are before buying a full price one.

Runninglatetoday · 11/09/2024 22:38

Uniqlo used to do a plain version that was wind proof. Also some much cheaper versions (plain colours) that were just fleece. Maybe try those to see if it becomes a favorite. They are great for layering.

However they want. Usually when they're cold.

The Uniqlo windproof ones are warm enough for all but the most bitter of winter weather. They're ok in unexpected light showers too because they dry so quickly - I wouldn't deliberately set out in pouring rain in one though, I'd have a waterproof shell over the top.

I think the advantage these jackets have over most outerwear is that they're soft and cosy enough to leave on when you come indoors, in the car etc if needed. And more comfortable to wear if you're exercising.

WickerMam · 11/09/2024 22:58

I find these are good for outdoor activities - cycling, skates, etc - in dry weather from autumn to spring. Indoors, and car journeys in winter. And as a general jacket on cooler days in summer.

The most versatile item, as long as it isn't raining.

Jennyathemall · 12/09/2024 07:07

You wear them like clothes….😐

mitogoshi · 12/09/2024 07:22

I have several of these for me. Useful as long as not raining or layered with a raincoat over the top, in my case under my motorcycle jacket as I get cold on the bike

Theunamedcat · 12/09/2024 08:06

Ds wears his instead of a jumper as he hates anything up his neck (sensory issues) it's fine for school as there is no "hood"

TeamPolin · 12/09/2024 08:15

Tbh, my son doesn't like heavy outdoor clothing unless it's absolutely freezing. He's one of those kids who overheats easily. So wears fleecy jackets like this from Sept to late Nov and again from Feb to late April. Buy a thin waterproof to go over the top in wet weather.

We are removing this while we do some checks behind the scenes.

TheNinny · 12/09/2024 10:20

i’ve had the same dilemma as well as we often got gifted these type of clothes but where we live rains a lot. i keep it for crisp, clear days in Autumn or spring, as a light jacket. Few and far between here so i don’t tend to buy them. Or if it’s dry, warm but cool breeze/windy type weather
