Fleece jacket for kids, how are they supposed to wear them?

I love this type of fleece jacked for DC but I don't quite get how they are supposed to be used... they seem to heavy to be used under a coat but too light to be used as outwear so I am thinking they can only work in the mid-season as a light jacket? How does everyone use them?

Put gilet on top and there as warm as a big coat when it's dry. Much less stiff though so kids can play properly climbing etc.

@FuckThePoPo why? It’s a weird tickness foe a jacket and I have never had one like this so I want to understand if I’d use it a lot or twice a year before spending £40 on it.

You've never has a fleece before?

It was 6°C this morning and sunny so I tried to get my dd to wear one to school this morning....she refused and I didn't have time to argue. It was the perfect day for it here though.

In the same way as you'd wear a cardigan, or sweatshirt or hoodie - essentially any layer of clothing that doesn't need to protect you from the rain.

SparkyBlue · 12/09/2024 21:27

DD is currently wearing that exact brand of similar jacket to school. It's very cosy and comfy and washes great and keeps its softness. Hers has actually been passed down from an older sibling.

I love fleeces like this for my kids, great for autumn or spring when it’s chilly but bright and in the winter great for under a rain jacket or fleecy puddle suit. I find them really versatile. Also good for in the colder months when your maybe just popping into shops and not going to be spending ages outside but want them to be cosy in the car as obviously padded jackets etc are a no no in car seats.

RosyappleA · 12/09/2024 23:47

When it isn’t raining and not too cold DD prefers it as it is much more flexible and comfortable than her raincoat. I get her one from uniqlo every couple of years.

My kids never liked coats so they would have these thicker jumpers/ jackets.

WhoOfWhoville · 13/09/2024 06:26

I can’t say I’ve ever put much thought into which exact period of time is appropriate for a fleece. I’d just put it on if it was cold.

TeenToTwenties · 13/09/2024 06:29

Ours wore theirs in autumn and spring when weather was dry, or under a light waterproof, and under a winter coat in winter for added warmth. Doubled up for fireworks displays, or other winter evening activities.
Useful in summer too in evenings, or when windy.
These kind of fleeces were probably one of the most useful and versatile pieces of their clothing.

Whatineed · 13/09/2024 06:38

I used to buy a fleece zipped jacket with matching bottoms each year for my DS like this. They were used as layering pieces under a snow suit or rain suit.

Sandpitnotmoshpit · 13/09/2024 06:41

My kids are wearing this sort of thing now - chilly mornings, not coat weather. We're in South East so doesn't rain every day. They will also wear fleeces in the house midwinter when it's freezing or as a layer under their winter coats (although that would probably be a thin fleece rather than one of these). This sort of jacket is a thing for my kids which does get light wear but then it's also fine as a hand me down/to sell on. So I'd have a look on vinted etc as it's the sort of thing which doesn't really get ruined/worn out by one child.

Sandpitnotmoshpit · 13/09/2024 06:46

Also don't get the snarky comments. It took me a few years with kids to work out exactly what is useful with kids and will help in winter. Mainly because my own wardrobe was for fashion not practicality. Now I've remodelled my clothes on theirs and own fleeces and waterproof trousers 😂

i’ve had the same dilemma as well as we often got gifted these type of clothes but where we live rains a lot. i keep it for crisp, clear days in Autumn or spring, as a light jacket. Few and far between here so i don’t tend to buy them. Or if it’s dry, warm but cool breeze/windy type weather

lol I love this comment because it’s so true! A dilemma I never anticipated before having kids, is the morning question of what the hell to put on them for nursery, when it’s freezing at 8am and sun will be shining at lunch time. I live in Scotland so we can see all seasons in a morning! The obvious answer is layers but of course I feel for the poor nursery teachers having to help put 4 layers on every child 🫣.

I’ve sat head in hands many a mornings trying to figure it out! These fleeces are actually really great for those king of days.
