The return of boho?! How do you feel?

Hadley Freeman writes in today’s Times that boho is back. She advises those of us who have been there before to keep it to a minimum. Given that we’ve all been told of late that a capsule wardrobe of elegantly toning neutrals is what we should all be aspiring to, are we ready to go boho?!

As for me, I’ll be giving boho a big swerve. I think you need to be young and wrinkle-free. I’d just look like a crazy old lady I think!

So - who will be ditching their blazer/tshirt jeans and embracing flowing skirts, chandelier earrings, faux fur etc? Anyone?!

No, I'm short with big boobs. Even when I was young and wrinkle free boho made me look like I'd been raiding the charity bins 😕

ODFOx · 08/09/2024 12:31

I've been channelling wrinkled old bay for a while now. My last attempts at boho made me feel like a mid 80s Duran Duran/Spandau ballet fan, so I twisted it a bit: no frilly things at all in my boho! I blend Gudrun with Lagenlook for swishiness and whimsy, with long beads and brightly rimmed glasses. It's a combination that works for me: for meetings the darker lagenlook goes over the brighter Gudrun. Vice versa for everyday wear.
I have arthritic ankles so this type of look allows me to wear ankle boots for support all year round.

Check out Sienna Miller. Boho queen 👸

redtrain123 · 08/09/2024 12:32

Love a bit if boho, and gave never stopped wearing it.

laurwalsh · 08/09/2024 12:33

Or Millie MacIntosh is very boho

GingerPirate · 08/09/2024 12:49

Big fat NO from me.

I've been coveting Sienna's style since I was in my early 20's and before that, Kate Moss. I've always been a bit boho, especially in summer. I have so many lovely white boho blouses and dresses, and nearly all my jewellery has a bohemian influence.

Stresshead84x · 08/09/2024 13:18

I don't think I ever stopped aiming to look like 2000's Sienna Miller/Kate Moss haha. I don't think it ever fully went away, or ever will really.

Mairzydotes · 08/09/2024 13:34

I like boho.

I've probably got some boho bits from over the years that I can wear with my casual , everyday clothes.

I’ve never worn blazer and jeans. I’d love it if flowing skirts without tiers/flounces and in natural materials were easy to find (recent shopping trips haven’t supplied them) and the rest, depends on the exact items and style.

This reminded me of the long velvet skirt I had in my 20s, God it was stunning. Full length, the most gorgeous thick wine-coloured cotton velvet, simple slightly A-line flowing shape, nipped in waist. Beautiful quality and looked just amazing. Haven't seen anything like that in recent years. Not that I've got the tiny waist any more, sadly 😆

BorisJohnsonsPhysique · 08/09/2024 13:41

Sounds fab. I’m mourning a long turqoise embroidered cotton skirt from the early 00s.

mitogoshi · 08/09/2024 13:43

Never stopped the boho. Don't like boring neutrals which only suit slim straight haired women anyway.

mitogoshi · 08/09/2024 13:46

As for ditching clothes, who dies that over about 25 years old, younger than that even? I wear until only fit for ragging or I might have "outgrown" aka bought too small really some things

mitogoshi · 08/09/2024 13:52

@free79

I'm so sorry to hear that, that's crazy, it's the 21st century not 1900 and they have never seen a person of colour! Clothes should be just clothes and we wear them because they suit us not societal norms etc. Some people are just racist, xenophobic or just plain old thoughtless, I'd love to say it was just age related different society now but I've met middle aged people just as bad, it's shameful. Wear whatever you feel comfortable wearing I suppose.

moraIpanic · 08/09/2024 14:49

I like the look on other people, but doesnt suit me at all and isn't really "me".

MeatRaffleRita · 08/09/2024 15:00

Yuck no thanks. Boho just looks crusty, clashing, hippy and cheap.

BettyBardMacDonald · 08/09/2024 15:12

Giggorata · 08/09/2024 11:24

I feel more comfortable and myself in boho garb, always have. I don't care if I come across as mad old lady; it isn't too far from the truth.

Same here! 🤣

Sandwichgen · 08/09/2024 15:28

BoNO!

Having said that, I’ve also got this in my basket and keep thinking “too much?” It would address both the boho and the pussy now, neck extravaganza latest fashion.

When you walk along the ends of the long pussy bow would work its way gradually until it's caught between your legs. Won't be a good look.
Might work with a skirt though.

BebbanburgIsMine · 08/09/2024 15:32

I've always worn boho clothes, so no change for me!

Long skirts and dresses, pretty and frilly blouses, yes please!

GettingStuffed · 08/09/2024 15:36

What do you mean back? I've been wearing boho most of my adult life.

GoldenSunflowers · 08/09/2024 15:37

God, yes. I hadn’t thought of that. Thank you for pointing that out.

free79 · 08/09/2024 12:13

It's one thing boho on a young white woman as fashion but if you're brown like me and you wear boho it makes you look 'foreign' as if it's my cultural clothing and this ramps up the racism and xenophobia so even though I adore boho, I notice attitudes are different and more suspicious of me when I dress boho (security following me, being asked if I'm Romanian (not my background), speaking to me in Urdu (also not my background) or speaking to me louder and slower in English then surprise to hear my accent)
I get treated better when I dress more 'European' so what I feel about boho returning is 'great, something else that I won't be wearing this fashion season' 🙄

Wow. That's awful.

missfliss · 08/09/2024 16:26

I sooo wanted to be Star from The Lost Boys - the OG Boho queen

FindingMeno · 08/09/2024 16:44

Have always been boho and, frankly, I dread being inadvertently part of mainstream fashion for a bit.
I do it well though and hope I would look old boho instead of new boho iyswim.
