Chin hair wtf

Mumofmarauders · 07/09/2024 22:47

Help me please!

I've never posted on this topic before because I'm less interested in style and beauty than almost any woman I've ever met. Since my late teens my hair removal routine (for above the neck) has been the same, a bit of veet, or whatever they're calling immac these days, between the eye brows and on the upper lip ever few weeks and then a pair of tweezers to the odd long hair which randomly appears on the chin/neck and will suddenly appear in the unforgiving light of a sunny afternoon or a fluorescent lit workplace loos mirror.

But increasingly over the past year or so (I'm 43) there are teeny tiny hairs proliferating on my chin like mushrooms in a woodland. The bastards are everywhere. They're almost too fine to get hold of with tweezers. I don't think they're very visible - though my skin is fair and my hair dark so who knows - but I hate them!

What do people use? I don't want to go to a beautician for regular or even one off appointments so I'm hoping there is some gadget someone might recommend that I can buy which will (as close to painlessly as possible) rid me of these troublesome hairs!

Very grateful for any recommendations!

Three options really. IPL either at home with eg a Philips Lumia, or at a beautician or similar for a stronger zap. Supposed to be really good for pale skin and dark hair. Stops them coming back. Unfortunately didn't work on my chin hairs though. So option 2 which I do now is electrolysis, which is a hot needle zap into the hair root while it's pulled out - doesn't hurt. Will eventually see them off for good but probably take years to do so. But yes you have to go to get this done at a beautician. I go every 3 weeks at £18. Or option 3 shave them off. I did that for a while but wasn't good for my skin and they grew back so fast. They are bastards. Try the home IPL first maybe if you meet the criteria.

I use an epilator. You can buy special facial ones but I just use an ordinary one. I couldn't shave or wax it now. It's satisfying pulling the hairs out. It grabs the really tiny ones.

Alex Drake · 07/09/2024 22:59

Yep, epilator is the way to go. Smarts a bit on the top lip but the only thing that does the job properly. A sqiuz every week or so does the trick.

Hohofortherobbers · 07/09/2024 23:04

Oh God yes, another year another bristly bastard chin hair. I pluck them but I'm beginning to lose the battle as their numbers increase. Going to have to find a better solution. They're fair but stiff little bristles, really firmly rooted. veet wax facial stripes can't budge the little fuckers.

Hohofortherobbers · 07/09/2024 23:06

Can feel at least 8 stubbly bustards tonight. Plucked only a few days ago Hmm

Wavingnotdowning · 07/09/2024 23:26

Have electrolysis. It takes a while, but they are gone for good.

vipersnest1 · 07/09/2024 23:49

SAD lamp plus x40 mirror plus good tweezers.
Sadly IPL only works on dark hairs and most of mine are fair.

JacksonAverysEyes · 07/09/2024 23:55

I have the most horrendous hairs under my chin. I started using a Phillips Lumea 6 weeks ago and they have disappeared. It’s absolutely incredible. However, I do have fair skin and dark hair.

cakecakecake98 · 07/09/2024 23:59

I’m 25 years old and been suffering this since about 16. Get a home IPL kit from Amazon, they really work, slowly but steadily. Other than that I completely feel your pain, it’s a complete bastard.

mrsfollowill · 08/09/2024 00:49

Get a Lumea- I got one in the first lockdown and it's been amazing for me. I had a full on tache as well as the bastard chin hairs- all gone. I'm very pale skinned with dark hair. Also worked brilliantly on the underarms- shave maybe once a year now used to be daily. Just wish I had bought it 10 years ago. I saved loads of money WFH so could finally afford it.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 08/09/2024 06:41

I use a dry razor in the mornings. Takes seconds.

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 08/09/2024 06:44

I wax them, always have since I was in my 20s. At 46 and it's now every 2-3 weeks. They're bastards

HappySunday01 · 08/09/2024 07:09

What if you have light skin and grey hair that used to be dark. Does it work then?

Spiderwmn · 08/09/2024 07:17

I wonder if you put something on the hairs to stain the root black the lumea would work on fair hairs?

GoldenLyonel · 08/09/2024 07:25

Just nearly fainted at the cost of a Lumea. I’m 43 and I had no idea this is something I will soon need to be worrying about. Oh the joys. Time to start saving into a beard zapper fund…

Hazel444 · 08/09/2024 07:32

Another vote for the Philips Lumea. I’ve always had the odd chin hair but when I got to my late 30’s they were out of control to the point where I wouldn’t leave the house without tweezers. Now my face is completely hair free and I couldn’t even tell you where my tweezers even are. I’ve just got the most basic model and got it on Black Friday a few years ago so it wasn’t too pricey, but even if it had been it would have been worth every penny.

GreenPoppy · 08/09/2024 07:39

Is the Lumea permanent or do you have to keep using it forever?

I've had electrolysis on the chin for many years, it keeps it down but new ones always sprout. The moustache ones didn't come back, they've been gone for over a decade.

I'm thinking of doing the Lumea alongside electrolysis, for those months I can't be bothered to let them all grow long enough to visit the beautician. I've got mainly blonde hairs but definitely some dark ones the Lumea would pick up.

melonhead · 08/09/2024 07:40

Can you use a lumea on your whole face, as a sort of dermaplaning alternative. Or is it just for the chin hairs?

RedRidingGood · 08/09/2024 07:41

I just pulled out 5 hairs on my chin. A morning ritual now. Very annoying.

Nagatha · 08/09/2024 07:46

I’ve had really heavy chin hair growth for about 20 years (41 now). It’s so fucking shit. You get rid of it and it’s visibly re-emerging by the next day.
The Lumea didn’t work for me as I have a mixture of dark hair and also lighter ones (lots of which are thick and all very visible). These days I just use a dermaplaning blade at home every few days and pluck out any strays in between. It’s not perfect and probably not good for me skin but it’s the only way I can keep on top of it.

Pringlebeak · 08/09/2024 07:46

Tweezers and a magnifying mirror. It's one of my favourite hobbies. 😅

moana1234 · 08/09/2024 07:48

Just shave like a man does with shaving gel once a week! basically dermoplaning but cheaper and leaves skin lovely & make up goes on lovely (it doesn't make hairs grow back thicker like everyone thinks!) just keep it up once a week in the shower

Bunniemalone · 08/09/2024 07:48

I have a chinful of the little buggers. But deep joy they are white, so IPL doesn't work. Used to use the boots version of immac for faces, but as I got older/went through the bastard' menopause. I could give DHs beard a run for its money. In lockdown I brought a home hot wax kit off Amazon & alternate between that & those Wilkinson facial dermaplaner things. Between the 2 over the last 4 years they have got a lot lot finer. Plus my moisturiser seems to go on a lot better & my skin looks really good, nice smooth no rashes. Plus bonus over that time they have got finer, not little shards of steel sticking out of my chin. Aging is not for the faint hearted!!

You can use it anywhere that has hair apart from near your eyes. I was hair free in about 3 months of using it and now I use it once a month for maintenance. There is an app that will tell you when it’s time for a treatment.

Threewheeler1 · 08/09/2024 07:59

They come back so quickly, I can barely keep up with the little horrors 😮
I get so distracted if I'm out and feel new bristly bits - always worry that my chin is going to look one big bollock by the time I get home 😬
(And honestly, those weird, random 4 inch ones that you suddenly spot growing out of a cheek or ear lobe are my nemesis...)
