Is this Louis Vuitton bag too 2000s to wear now? Sell or style?

I'm in a bit of a style crisis and could use some advice. I've got this Louis Vuitton bag that's giving me major 2000s vibes, and I'm torn about what to do with it.

On one hand, I'm thinking of selling it because it feels so dated. But on the other, I'm wondering if there's a way to style it that could work for today's trends.

What do you all think? Is it possible to make a 2000s-era LV bag work in 2024? Or should I just cut my losses and sell it?

If you think I should keep it, I'd love some styling suggestions. How would you update this look for current fashions?

I love this bag, keep and wear it!

NewMe2024 · 07/09/2024 11:21

Keep and wear!

PlutarchHeavensbee · 07/09/2024 11:36

Absolutely keep it. If you sell it - you’ll definitely regret it.

I had a gorgeous Prada bag that I sold around 5 years ago and I’ve regretted it ever since.

notaurewhatusername · 07/09/2024 11:59

I just have no idea how to style it?! It's very 2000s!!! How would you wear it? What with?

Definitely keep it, burgundy is going to be a big colour this winter and the 90s/00s trends are coming back in…
Do you have Pinterest? Search burgundy bag outfit or styling a burgundy bag and you’ll get some inspiration…

thedefinitionofmadness · 07/09/2024 12:09

Borodeaux/plum/burgundy is alledgedly key colour this A/W
I don't know how you "style" an accessory - wear it with current clothes?

TheChosenTwo · 07/09/2024 12:15

Looks really dated to me, although the colour is lovely. I’d suggest selling but without wanting to be rude I’m not sure what people would pay for it (just because it’s not very currently in shape or style and it’s not old enough to be vintage). But I hate holding on to things I don’t wear so I would have gotten rid of it a long time ago!

Heelworkhero · 07/09/2024 12:16

How do you style a bag? Don’t you just put stuff in and then carry it?

notaurewhatusername · 07/09/2024 14:04

@Heelworkhero it's the style of clothes to wear this with perhaps it's. A work bag?

I don't feel it fits my casual style at all

What do you think will happen if you use it? People wont run away from you screaming! I have no idea what you mean by it being very 2000’s . It’s a bag. That’s all.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 07/09/2024 14:13

A terribly fashionable person told me years ago to “tie” an item into an outfit it might not otherwise work with, make sure at least one colour was repeated elsewhere. Not sure if this works, but if you say, had a jumper in the same colour (or a pattern that had at least one bit with the same burgundy colour), it would give the impression of being a conscious style choice, less of a mistake.

don’t have it on the crook of your arm or over your wrist, hand held with arm straight would look better.

it’s quite a smart bag so your outfit will need to be smarter, even if not completely workwear, a wool coat not a padded one.

But it is a bit dated, maybe store for a few years and see if that style comes back in?

Lovethatforyouhun · 07/09/2024 14:25

Keep hold of it. No doubt it will be the “it” bag next year or so. The 2000s are back baby!

TomatoSandwiches · 07/09/2024 14:27

It's not THE most dated bag and the colour is definitely in for the late season which means you could wear it just fine or it will sell well so it's entirely up to you.

grooveraidiator · 07/09/2024 14:41

i'd keep it, i've sold bags and regret it later. i'm very casual too and i struggle as i feel i dont dress well for my bags but denim and leather type trainers, not sports trainers.? agree not a puffer jacket, smarter shaped coat. shirt with collar to smarten up look?

Mercurial123 · 07/09/2024 14:42

Looks like an Alma? If you don't wear it and it doesn't go with your style, I'd sell it.

unsync · 07/09/2024 15:05

It's an Alma Vernis. They're going for upwards of £600 on VC at the moment. If you're never going to use it, sell it and buy something you will use. You must have liked it when you bought it, what's changed?

notaurewhatusername · 07/09/2024 15:12

@unsync I bought it ten years ago and it was on trend then I just think it's incredibly dated now

OP posts:
unsync · 07/09/2024 15:51

Ah, in which case sell and go for a more classic / timeless bag (not LV or patent). Loewe do some nice bags if you don't want to spend mega bucks.

DeCaray · 07/09/2024 16:03

If it will make you feel self conscious about it in certain circles then sell it and buy something else.

It is a nice bag but it is of it's time.

notaurewhatusername · 07/09/2024 16:20

@unsync love Loewe though have three already! So I think a change would be nice.

I kind of like the LV classic but also thinks it's chavvy, like this bag!!

I want something timeless so that I don't end up in this situation again 😂

It's a lovely colour. I never get rid (unless absolutely necessary) of good handbags/shoes/clothing.

If I like something, I generally like it forever and I don't care if it's fashionable or not, it will always "go with" something in my wardrobe, if that makes sense? I tend to go for monochrome not printed items though, so not a lot can "clash". (I agree with the "match to tie in" something comment upthread too). Bags for an outfit are chosen for their function, eg do I need a tote or clutch for today. Also if I like a brand, I will normally keep on liking it eg personally I don't like LV bags (although the colour of your bag is gorgeous @notaurewhatusername) but I would know if I bought a black Prada tote, or a graphite Le Pliage it would get used forever. Something less "boring" and more frivolous, especially shoes, may only be worn a couple of times a year, but over 20 years, it's still worth it for the cost/time ratio!

And even if you aren't as boring as me Grin and prefer to wear something on trend or in current fashion, everything comes back around eventually. My DD is currently in love with my Balenciaga baguette bag which I think I bought in the 90s (Le Cagole?) which is a great evening bag to go out with as it fits so closely under the shoulder it's not easy to steal from and apparently perfect to keep wearing while you're dancing. That may be why I originally bought it, but it's a while since I went dancing Grin DD has been using it as her "going out" bag for the past two years, so it was definitely worth keeping!

If you like it please keep it! S & B MNers will always be able to give advice how to wear it or what to wear it with to make it more current. Smile

StyleIsOnTrendNotFashion · 07/09/2024 16:35

(I always keep the original dust bags, authenticity cards etc though, in case I do need to sell anything)

What do you mean how do you wear it. It’s bag. You carry it. My friend has this exact bag. It’s gorgeous. If I were you I’d use it all the time.

Agree - was surprised everyone else seems to say "keep it". But also agree it does LOOK good - which means it MIGHT sell well (especially as many people here like it!).
IF kept I'd wear it with other burgundy or maybe light yellow (not lemon).

Time40 · 07/09/2024 16:54

I wouldn't have known it was dated! It just looks like a nice bag to me.

I think it would look great with a very, very casual outfit - for instance, beaten-up old jeans, baggy jersey and trainers. The contrast between scruffy and ultra-smart would really work (in my opinion).
