That is a stonking tiara!

She looks lovely, glowing and happy, just as a bride should look.

Spot on! 💕

Serenster · 29/09/2024 07:36

I looked again at the history of the veil that Theodora wore, and remembered that while the now Queen Mary of Denmark obviously wasn’t related to Queen Ingrid, she too wore the veil for her wedding to Frederik. He was very close to his grandmother (she bequeathed him her fabulous ruby parure for his eventual bride to wear) but it also meant that the veil has now been worn at the weddings of three Queens of Denmark - Ingrid, Margarethe and Mary.

Here’s Mary, Ingrid and the the veil (and the Khedive tiara’s original owner), Margaret of Connaught (who became Crown Princess of Sweden on her wedding, but died at only 38) all wearing the veil for their weddings.

It was very sad, she died so young, leaving five children. Ingrid was 10.

I don't really like the way Mary wore it, sadly.

Maireas · 29/09/2024 08:42

That's a sad story.
No, I didn't like Mary's very high bun either.

I think Margaret's widower eventually remarried to Prince Philip's aunt Louise, didnt he?

AllTangledUpInMyMonkeyNutNecklace · 29/09/2024 09:20

Yes that's right.

Serenster · 29/09/2024 09:23

Yes Lord Louis Mountbatten’s older sister Louise (what were their parents thinking? 🤣 ) was Queen of Sweden for many years. Their sister Alice was Prince Phillip’s mother.

KillingMeDeftIy · 29/09/2024 09:36

Apparently Gustaf Adolf was a devoted amateur historian and archaeologist so that may be where Daisy gets her love of archaeology from.

She didn't attend Theodora's wedding (maybe because of her recent fall) but Benedikte and Anne-Marie were carrying handbags that she designed and hand-embroidered for them!

Maireas · 29/09/2024 09:37

That's so lovely re: the handbags! Daisy is very creative.

@KillingMeDeftIy yes that's where it came from - she's spoken about how much she enjoyed learning from him.

She's in quite a bad way from the fall, I think. She definitely wasn't going to be able to go.

deeahgwitch · 29/09/2024 09:42

Queen Anne Marie was only 18 when she married. Shock

KillingMeDeftIy · 29/09/2024 09:43

I can't decide whether or not I like it MC's dress. The pleating is interesting but the overall vibe is a bit Star Trek. I don't think the warm peach colour suits her - ice blue or something cool-toned would've been better.

I think the skirt part hangs beautifully. The top part doesn't seem right, perhaps it's the polo neck on top of the V.

It’s a shame Daisy couldn’t go, as she and her sisters and their wider families seem so close. Even if Felipe and Letizia couldn’t make it, it was nice to see the Spanish contingent of Queen Sofia and her daughters, the brides’ aunt and cousins respectively. Sofia’s sister Irene was also there, but not in this photo.

It's very close to her skin tone, if not exactly the same, isn't it. I like the dress but I agree it's not the best colour.

Yes, more than half the age Theodora was when she married! I think I read that she met Constantine when she was 13 and he was 19 and they got engaged when she was 15.

AllTangledUpInMyMonkeyNutNecklace · 29/09/2024 09:54

King Frederik apparently locked Constantine in a room when he asked to marry Anne-Marie and had to go away and cool down before Ingrid was able to smooth things over. 😄

KillingMeDeftIy · 29/09/2024 09:59

I have to say I'd be worried too if a 23yo man said he wanted to marry my 15yo daughter! But they appear to have been devoted to each other and like QEII and PP had "two families".

AllTangledUpInMyMonkeyNutNecklace · 29/09/2024 10:03

Ingrid knew about it so someone was looking out for her, but she did apparently tell Anne-Marie, for goodness' sake don't tell your father, or something to that effect.

I suppose it was a different time anyway and royal women often married young. They had a long and very happy marriage so I guess it worked out okay.

Here are the bags the two royal sisters wore to the wedding.

Gorgeous! I love the orange and pink outfit. Is that Benedickte?

AllTangledUpInMyMonkeyNutNecklace · 29/09/2024 10:04

Yes. And I love it too, very pretty.

Maireas · 29/09/2024 10:10

Beautiful, thanks @AllTangledUpInMyMonkeyNutNecklace

KillingMeDeftIy · 29/09/2024 10:13

Imagine if it wasn't to your taste though? Mary would be posting on AIBU "to ask how I can tell MiL I don't care for the bag she made me"!

AllTangledUpInMyMonkeyNutNecklace · 29/09/2024 10:14

Heheheh I did think that too @KillingMeDeftIy! You'd just wear it every so often wouldn't you...
