Are these jeans in fashion?

So as a skinny jean lover for more years I care to remember.
I'm being told by influencers that they aren't in fashion and we should be wearing these ?
Apparently in for autumn ?
I just can't help thinking they aren't as flattering as skinny's ?
Am I missing something ?
What's the name of these jeans ?
How would you style them?
Lots of influencers wearing them

Are these jeans in fashion?

I’ve literally just today returned two more ‘current’ cuts of jeans and exchanged them for two new pairs of skinny jeans! I’m a millennial and my brain cannot believe that other cuts are more flattering 😂 I like Mom jeans on other people but I felt so dumpy in them! I have ordered some high waisted straight leg jeans to try out
I’ve been really impressed with the M&S super soft range. I’ve not long had a c-section so have moved to high waisted to go with my new mum tum.

"I like Mom jeans on other people but I felt so dumpy in them!"

I tried a pair of the M and S mom jeans. They just looked like clown trousers on me. I think it's because I'm short (5 foot nothing) and thick waisted (32" inch even at 8 stone 😭), so anything in that style that fits my waist is really baggy on my hips and thighs. I'm still searching for the right style jeans for me. Tried straight leg - just made my legs look like shapeless tree trunks. I will never in a million years wear anything bootcut, wide legged or flared. Skinnies - I'd sooner just wear thick leggings. I found a pair of M and S relaxed slim fit left behind by DD1 that fit me and - I think - look okay. They're in good nick, but I don't like the grey colour, so will dye them black. They're 98% cotton so should dye well enough.

When people think some jean shape looks terribly unflattering it's sometimes because they are wearing them with the same things they wear with other shaped jeans.

You can't just change the trouser shape. You have to rethink the entire outfit.

It's like saying baggy tops are unflattering but they worked with skinny jeans when that was the current trend.

But if you wear the baggy oversized jumper with baggy oversized jeans it won't necessarily look good on you

Floisme · 10/09/2024 20:22

Aw thank you @BusterGonad, not seen you around for a while, hope you're well?
I love the sound of your sailor jeans. I normally find they 'give' after a few wears.

Sorry about the typos.

Lol to big bobs 😂

Seas164 · 10/09/2024 20:32

Got rid of the skinnies and went into the Boyfriend from M and S as a transition, then into the Whistles Barrels a couple of years back, and they're still going strong.

Perfectlystill · 10/09/2024 22:52

I haven't seen anyone in barrel leg jeans who doesn't look awful.

BusterGonad · 11/09/2024 00:20

@Floisme thank you. I am doing well, I lost my mojo for a bit but I am happy and I'm enjoying fashion again! 😊

bryceQ · 11/09/2024 08:53

Fashion isn't always about what's flattering. If that's important to you just stick with the style you like best!

Agree, it looks so frumpy and untidy. It makes a bigger person look even bigger and untidy. This coupled with an oversized sweater is just such a scruffy look.

Seas164 · 11/09/2024 09:24

The questions was are they in fashion, and the answer is yes. Whether you suit them, or whether anyone else likes them or feels they are stylish is a different matter.

I'll cop to being scruffy-lookin', but never frumpy, no matter how—gasp!—big my trousers are. But I don't consider the definition of flattering to be "appearing to take up less space."

I find neat-as-a-pin and perfectly-coiffed to be far more "frumpy" a look, if we must use such a stupid word.

Entirely agree!

I guess we all have a different view on what looks awful.

I find dated looks pretty awful but that's just me.

I think these look fresh and not at all frumpy. It's definitely not a classic. But like sailor pants, wide flares, spray on skinny or pretty much any jean shape other than straight leg, they don't have to be something that works forever.

Buster you need denim with a small percentage of elastane if you're buying a tight pair. 100% cotton doesn't give at all and if the item is not big enough it will cut you in half when you sit down. With elastane if it's a size too small you just bulge a little when you sit.

Thebellofstclements · 12/09/2024 13:57

I still don't understand the fascination with skinny jeans. They really only suit the most slim people, which most people are not. They make most people look like they have short, chubby legs.

Believe it or not I've found a tip, I put them on a seriously tight hanger, sprayed the waist with water and left them for 24 hours. They are now not so tight and fit quite nicely. I've also ironed the waist band whilst damp and stretched them. It is literally only the waist band, the zip etc are fine but they have a narrow waist band. If they still feel too tight I've also bought a hook and eye to sew on. They don't have a traditional Jean waist. They are more like trousers.

Skinny jeans are amazing if you are tall as its acceptable to have them above the ankles, I've struggled for years to get jeans long enough, I've not lived in the UK in a longtime and I just couldn't find my lengh, I've recently moved and have found a shop that do jeans in my leg length now. I've purchased some flares and sailor types. I couldn't be more excited but skinnys will always have a place in my wardrobe. My legs are slim so I feel like I look okay in them.

Alltoowell10minuteversion · 12/09/2024 16:48

I think skinny jeans are fairly unflattering for most people, bar those with long, skinny legs. They make everyone else look like they have parsnip legs. I am old enough to remember when they became fashionable in the early/mid 00s and I was truly horrified by how bad they made (nearly) everyone look. However, we all wore them eventually as that was all we could find/didn’t want to look too ‘90s bootcut’ any more and we got used to the parsnip silhouette…but actually other styles look way better on people without very slim legs imo (and actually, I am really tall and thin with thin legs but they still don’t suit me as I have fat knees!) - bootcut are far more flattering for most people as they balance out the wider part of the body.

I really like the ones the OP has posted. I’m just not sure what shoes to wear with them in the winter, but this is my yearly struggle with non-skinny jeans and winter footwear.

PrimalLass · 12/09/2024 17:32

I don't really understand the obsession with telling everyone they looked shit in skinnies for years ...

I don't have really slim legs but they are in proportion, so looked absolutely fine in skinnies. I'm an apple though so look awful in the wide leg jeans that need a tucked in top.

Mirren22 · 12/09/2024 17:47

Following as currently have the same issue. I've lived in M&S skinny jeans the elasticated waist ones in short but I am getting a bit tired of the skinny look. I am short at 5,4 with very skinny legs, kinda more top heavy like D cup. Just can't quite fathom what to buy for Autumn / Winter. Open to trousers too but not sure where to start

Mirren22 · 12/09/2024 17:48

@BusterGonad think I'm the same as you might check out some M&S slightly flared ones

BusterGonad · 12/09/2024 20:36

@Mirren22 yes, try out some flares, I haven't worn mine yet as I've given them a quick wash, I don't want the dye rubbing of on my trainers! 😂 But I planning to wear them tomorrow and I simply cannot wait. I don't think I've been this excited about new clothes in a long time. I just cannot believe I've finally found a store that carries my leg lengh!!! I'm 5ft 10in tall.

They both look like they’re wearing someone else’s clothes and the collar being big as well on the first one makes her look like her head has shrunk! These aren’t fresh looks at all, they’re the same outfits at their core that have been ‘chic’ for at least a decade except they’ve just put on clothes that are too big for their frames.
