Make up brands for the over fifties who have lost their way - Jones Road, Trinny London?

During a shopping session today, a friend took me to Liberty to visit the Jones Road counter. I have been the miracle balm advertised for ages, and thought it looked pretty good. Previous trips to Liberty have seen the counter mobbed, so I was hopeful it would be emptier and I might get some advice.

They don't do consultations, so there is no way of really trying before you by. I was hoping a nice capable salesperson was going to take me in hand and show me which products would work on me, but they don't do that. There where four people behind the counter and only one talking to me, so it wasn't like they were busy. Disappointing really as I would have liked to try them out.

On the way out I saw the Trinny London (another new brand I see advertised, but have never tried) section and there were lots of mirrors/tables to try products on, and I got the feeling that they might be a good bet for a later date,

So, are either of these brands any good, or is there another you would recommend. I don't wear a huge amount of make up. just lipstick and mascara, and would like to try some new products. I don't want contouring, or heavy foundation, just a few products to lift and accentuate my 'look'.

(I have previously use Laura Mercier, Bobbi Brown and Nars)

Many years ago, there used to be a beautician at Dickens and Jones who you could book with, and they would make you over with all of the brands in the store.

Trinny London is great. You can book a consultation where the cost is redeemable against purchase of items afterwards. Staff are really nice. With a consultation you know the shades are right for you.

The miracle balm went in my bin. A waste of money. Vaseline would do the same job of making me shiny and sticky. Don’t buy it, horrible gummy stuff. Trinny London BFF is good and has some SPF but the rest of the range is nothing special. I agree with the comments about Lisa Eldridge, the products are beautiful.

Summerhillsquare · 03/09/2024 07:34

I had the Trinny lip 2 cheek in my Liberty beauty box thingy and as per PP, it's rather dry and bleeds a bit on lips.

Everything else they sent me was top notch though!

I found lip2cheek awful. Dry and such an unnatural colour. Also the JR beauty balm did not work for me. It just made me greasy, like a PP said, Vaseline would have looked better and saved some money!

I like Lisa Eldridge, her tutorial videos are great and have been impressed with the mascara.

Another vote for Lisa Eldridge. Before her range was stocked in store, she did a pop up in Covent Garden and one of the MUAs spent ages showing me how her highlighter worked, finding me a new lipstick etc. Her eye palettes really last, and the foundation is lovely.

I think for me it's not so much that products don't work as such (although there have been a few I used once and knew straight away I didn't like) rather that I have so much that I don't give products a fair chance before I'm on to the next 🤦🏻‍♀️

i get the liberty calendar and so that lasts me the full year or more so I've always got new stuff

repeat buys for me

Estée Lauder daywear tinted moisturiser (I have used this for 20 plus years)

the dr sebagh hylauronic serum (maybe like 3 bottles so 5 years)

clinique clarifying lotion (this one since I was 16 and bought it with my first months wages) but I do miss the days it stripped your skin off 😂😂

a new entry with Sunday Riley Luna oil. Hate the colour which put me off at first but I have to say it really makes a difference.

Gatineau grommage - this is always a pleasure never a chore to use. I have repeat special bought this on qvc since forever.

The Selfridges service sounds great. Mac still do a makeover service using their products and advertise their makeup as being for all ages. I have used this in the past and the money was deducted from the cost of the products I purchased (I don’t know if they still do that).

Just got this email from Trinny. They’re opening a shop in the King’s Road mid September

I have always avoided Trinny stuff because Charles Saatchi is a shareholder. It may be irrational, but that's how I feel.

SuperGreens · 03/09/2024 20:41

I like Nars tinted moisturiser, very buildable, can be super light or heavier with more. And the westman atelier cream blush sticks are great. Sali Hughs on instagram has lots of good tips and product reviews.

I have mixed views on TL; love the cream eyeshadow, miracle blur was great but dried out VERY quickly and was then unusable. I liked the BFF, which was discontinued. I did have to set it with powder though otherwise it didn’t last at all. Haven’t tried the BFF replacement (all day foundation) as it’s expensive if it doesn’t do what I want.

I’ve been using MAC serum foundation which I like. Never tried JR, so can’t comment on that.

BFF isn’t discontinued as I bought some last week.

And to add, OP, is great when you don’t want ‘proper’ foundation but something a bit lighter.
