Make up brands for the over fifties who have lost their way - Jones Road, Trinny London?

During a shopping session today, a friend took me to Liberty to visit the Jones Road counter. I have been the miracle balm advertised for ages, and thought it looked pretty good. Previous trips to Liberty have seen the counter mobbed, so I was hopeful it would be emptier and I might get some advice.

They don't do consultations, so there is no way of really trying before you by. I was hoping a nice capable salesperson was going to take me in hand and show me which products would work on me, but they don't do that. There where four people behind the counter and only one talking to me, so it wasn't like they were busy. Disappointing really as I would have liked to try them out.

On the way out I saw the Trinny London (another new brand I see advertised, but have never tried) section and there were lots of mirrors/tables to try products on, and I got the feeling that they might be a good bet for a later date,

So, are either of these brands any good, or is there another you would recommend. I don't wear a huge amount of make up. just lipstick and mascara, and would like to try some new products. I don't want contouring, or heavy foundation, just a few products to lift and accentuate my 'look'.

(I have previously use Laura Mercier, Bobbi Brown and Nars)

I don't know Jones Road, but I do like Trinny London and find their staff very helpful. I'm probably influenced by fact that Trinny is absolutely lovely in real life. When, like you, I was looking for inspiration, I walked through a beauty department and picked an assistant who looked great, but natural - what I'd aspire to! - and asked them for advice. That worked for me.

Mercurial123 · 02/09/2024 16:00

I found Jones Road to be overrated, and the products I've tried have been disappointing. Trinny is ok. The creme eyeshadow is great, but the lip/blush combo was really dry. The shade finder was really off for me.

I like Lisa Eldridge and Lumene cc cream, and liquid blush is good quality.

hopeishere · 02/09/2024 16:02

I didn't like the Jones Road stuff. Great marketing but not much else!

WaneyEdge · 02/09/2024 16:16

I have mixed views on TL; love the cream eyeshadow, miracle blur was great but dried out VERY quickly and was then unusable. I liked the BFF, which was discontinued. I did have to set it with powder though otherwise it didn’t last at all. Haven’t tried the BFF replacement (all day foundation) as it’s expensive if it doesn’t do what I want.

I’ve been using MAC serum foundation which I like. Never tried JR, so can’t comment on that.

peasepudding · 02/09/2024 16:25

I don't think you can beat Bobbi Brown really.

AlexanderArnold · 02/09/2024 16:35

That's such a shame about Jones Road. I was hooked on Bobbi Brown for years after a makeover at one of their counters, which was so helpful and just looked stunning!

I now mostly wear Clarins as I find everything hits the decent coverage but still glowy/natural sweet spot for me. The TL stuff I've tried just looks too heavy. That said, I only wear foundation, some kind of cream blusher, lip gloss and I buy cheap mascaras as I like to replace then fairly frequently.

jellycatandkittens · 02/09/2024 16:39

That's not my experience of the Jones Road counter. I've been a couple of times and was able to try the balm and foundation with advice from the consultants.

Lolapusht · 02/09/2024 16:44

I’ve started using Trinny and it’s brilliant. Total game-changer. I use the BFF every day (minimal coverage but makes you look fresh and like you’ve got much younger skin! It’s also a bit magic as it’s white and changes colour to suit your skin. I don’t know how, but it does), the under eye cream is incredible, the foundation is very lightweight but with good coverage, the eye creams are excellent and the Miracle Balm is, again, a pot full of magic. The only thing I’d give 8/10 to is the Lip 2 Cheek as I find it bleeds a bit and tends to dry my lips out but nothing that can’t be sorted out with a bit of balm. It’s lovely as a blush (although I’ve found a great elf cream stick blush that’s got a bit of a shimmer to it). All in all, it makes you look like you’ve got naturally radiant skin while having just a touch of makeup on.

Revolution London have drupes of the JR balm at a much cheaper price, it's a huge pot so would last ages

BlueBlueBerries · 02/09/2024 16:56

*dupes

biedrona · 02/09/2024 19:34

If they don't do consultations, why do they have 4 staff behind counter? Just to cash you up?

Beebopwasthebest · 02/09/2024 19:59

Lisa Eldridge...I have bought several products and love them. Her videos are great too.

HelloMyNameIsElderSmurf · 02/09/2024 20:01

I like and use both brands and am really surprised that the Jones Road assistants didn't help you out with products. Their products are a bit 'different' - you need to have a go with things like Miracle Balm - so it's really counter-productive that they didn't let you try them out or help you. Weird.

TL I just bought some stuff online, I love BFF. Agree with a pp that lip to check is a bit dry on my lips but I did the online colour match and love the colour so that's good.

I tend to wear BFF on my face with miracle balm as a blush/highlighter. The JR eyebrow pencil is a thing of wonder and I like their concealer pencil too. I just wear any old mascara and that's me done.

TempersFuggit · 02/09/2024 20:14

I think I wasn't very clear with my description of Jones Road counter, they definitely spoke about the products, answered my questions and let me touch the samples, but I wanted to book a makeover/consultation to see exactly what could be achieved by an expert. I asked but said they didn't offer them, so I was left just rubbing a few fingerfuls on my hand, but not quite what I needed. To someone who knew the range it would have been enough, but not for a newbie like me.

I went to the Lisa Eldridge counter in Liberty. The staff were so friendly and helpful. I wanted a lipstick that I could wear everyday that "just made me look better". Not exactly an informative brief but they spent ages with me until I found what I wanted. Highly recommend.

circular1985 · 02/09/2024 20:17

I bought the jones road balm. It looks ok on but feels horrible- sticky and like the skin can't breathe.

TempersFuggit · 02/09/2024 20:21

Many years ago, there used to be a beautician at Dickens and Jones who you could book with, and they would make you over with all of the brands in the store. You did have to pay if I remember correctly, but it was so nice. You'd get skincare and make up recs and it perfect. I have no idea if anyone offers that now, but it was wonderful at the time.

So glad I saw this! I was going to go to Liberties tomorrow to try it out - I really need something dewy and it sounds like JR might not be the one.

Has anyone tried the ilia super serum tint? I tried some on my hand in Sephora on holiday and it seemed nice. Not sure where to buy it here though.

hildabaker · 02/09/2024 20:24

Another vote for TL creme eyeshadow, I was able to pat it on so that it didn't drag on my wrinkled eyelids, and the colour is buildable.

learieonthewildmoor · 02/09/2024 21:14

I bought my Trinny London online using the match2me and it was a very good match. The lip2cheek is drying; but the blush, highlighter, concealer and eyeshadows are great.

peppermum60 · 02/09/2024 21:21

Have a look at Look Fabulous Forever website. It's an online brand for more mature women with no quibble money back guarantee if you don't like the products. Lots of videos on YouTube and an active Facebook group set up by the founder Tricia Cusden who set up the brand when she couldn't get what she wanted or needed at high street beauty counters. Lovely products made in the UK

TragicMuse · 02/09/2024 21:39

Isn't Jones Road the brand run by actual Bobbi Brown since she sold the Bobbi Brown brand? I'm sure it is...

I love the look of Trinny, but I need to feel textures and try samples before spending big. I'm not risking it without either a makeover or some samples.

I like the miracle balm very much. You only need a tiny bit and it gives you a glow/flush of sheer colour. A tub will last forever. The foundation was not good; really grainy and the grains didn't break down at all.

I have not tried any Trinny, as I cannot take her seriously. Her products make her face so shiny and her lips are so full of filler, they actually wobble. I don't to look like that.

DarlingCoffee · 03/09/2024 05:43

I’m a fan of Trinny London and have a tower of her stackable pots! They last me ages and I love the colours, easy to wear and apply too
