Need a powerful directional hairdryer

JJJJuniper · 02/09/2024 08:53

I've got very menopausal hair now. Thinning. Frizzy etc etc
Desperately need a new hairdryer that's powerful enough to properly blow dry with (so directional heat that smooths and defrizzes.)
I've got the BaByliss Midnight Luxe 2300 Dryer at the moment but it just leaves hair like cotton wool and frizzy. (I've just seen that it's reduced in clearance at Boots now so maybe other people didn't find it great either.)
Thank you for any suggestions.

No clue but following. I tried asking similar question in chat but got no response.
I've two hairdryers both 20 years plus, both babyliss, one 2000w with a tiny short cable, the other 1400w with diffuser and a decent cable. I only actually noticed the power difference after I realised how much quicker the gyms dryers dry my hair.

I've been waiting for mine to break to upgrade but starting to think they'll out live me and life is too short. I've Boots points and a £100 gift card that can be used in various places inc John Lewis burning a hole in my pocket!

@Needanewname42 hope we get some good recommendations ...

I love my Dyson hairdryer and think it’s worth every penny but realise that some may balk at the price. Parlux are supposed to be good and are cheaper than Dyson.

PauliesWalnuts · 02/09/2024 09:58

I've had Hairtools and then Parlux for coming up to 30 years and would never go back to a retail hairdryer. I've got very curly hair that I blow dry straight a couple of times a week and these are the only ones that don't leave me with a frizzy afro. At the moment I've got a Parlux Compact and it's fantastic. They aren't the cheapest but they are absolutely bombproof. I've never had one break or cut out on me; they just gradually lose power, but mine was 15 years old by the time that started to happen.

Another Dyson fan here- worth every cent.

Batmanisaplaceinturkey · 02/09/2024 10:50

My own take on the Parlux vs Dyson is that thin hair (the actual thickness of the strand not the overrall amount of hair) does well with Dyson and thick hair does better with Parlux. Happy to be proved wrong though as this is just my opinion!

SophiaSW1 · 02/09/2024 11:09

I think the Dyson is better too, but only a bit better.

cheesypeas123 · 02/09/2024 12:10

Parlux here too - tried a Dyson and just made my hair an even frizzier mess. Parlix are cheaper than Dyson and much better
IMO - most professional hairdressers use them too. Last for years so good investment!

GreenSalon2 · 02/09/2024 12:15

I’ve got very thick hair and now also menopausal. Usually reasonably straight but now prone to frizziness because of underlying greys (hair also highlighted).
I’ve had Parlux for years following hairdresser recommendation and would really recommend however I recently treated myself to a Dyson and it is great. It’s lighter and a tiny bit faster but the straightening tool is great. Overall I would say if you don’t want to fork out for a Dyson would also recommend a parlux though I know they’re not exactly cheap either

TheBossOfMe · 02/09/2024 12:22

Dyson is best at no frizz

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/09/2024 12:55

Parlux is great and I had one for 10 years and just replaced with a Diva which is equally as good for a quarter of the price.

Makes me look like Worzel Gummidge 😂

You need products for frizz, L'Oreal extraordinary oil is fantastic so it VO5 serum.

PuppyMonkey · 02/09/2024 12:58

Another vote for Dyson, I think it’s great for a smooth blow dry - but take the point that it’s ridiculously expensive.

Hoppingblackbird · 02/09/2024 13:52

I have very thick hair but I love my Dyson.

You need a good hair product, like Kiehl’s smoothing oil Leave-In Concentrate. Best I’ve ever tried.

Thank you ! for all the replies and info about oils too.
Off to investigate.
Did my hair this morning and it looks so awful. Determined to do something about it

Go to a really good hairdresser, watch carefully when she styles your hair and ask questions. I often get product samples to try.

Gonegrey31 · 02/09/2024 14:28

Try Color Wow products (I buy mine at M&S) - the Bombshell volumiser and Raise the Root spray combined with a Dyson or Parlux (both equally good in my view) - my frizz becomes sleek and manageable.

DrPeculiar · 02/09/2024 14:29

Parlux here too, I've had two in 30 years.

Feist · 02/09/2024 14:30

You want Moroccan Oil styling cream and a GHD Helios

DrPeculiar · 02/09/2024 14:33

😱I've just clicked on the Parlux link above - the prices !!!

My current one is from 2016 and it cost £75. Superturbo 3200. I have got extremely thick curly hair that is inclined to be very frizzy. I dry straight with a round bristle brush. I use Loreal Mythic oil which smells divine!

ChilliPB · 02/09/2024 14:59

Dyson is great especially if you use the smoothing attachment. Absolutely amazing for reducing any frizz and flyaways.

I wonder if those PPs who found the Dyson created frizz weren’t using it with this attachment?

Another Parlux vote. Several in our household have one (I also have some sons with long hair), for some reason no one shares hairdryers here🤷‍♀️, and everyone loves it. I think the first person got one on recommendation from hairdresser and they became infectious🤣. I use it and it’s much better for my thin hair than any previous hairdryers I’ve had, no frizz.

HamSad · 02/09/2024 17:20

Parlux, all day long. They're noisy but just miles ahead of the contenders. Mine was £80 I think which is expensive but nowhere near to Dyson and IMO it's better.
