Swimsuit and shorts, no top over swimsuit?

Would you feel comfortable wearing just a pair of shorts and a swim suit with no vest/t shirt over the top. I'm off to Málaga in a week and it looks HOT. As it's a city break with a beach we will be spending some time there but will probably have a wander, do lunch etc as well. I just think I'll be too hot with a 2nd layer but not sure if it's not the done thing. Especially with so many locals not wanting tourists these days, I'd rather not draw attention to the fact I am one 😂
They are full swimsuits, but that kind of waffle/ruffle material so not normal shiny swimsuit material and it's not low cut etc.

Struggling to visualise what you mean about your ruffle swimsuit, but in respect of a Speedo swimsuit: fine for places just by the beach (where you go just for a coffee, snack, ice cream, small shop, that sort of thing), definitely not for anything more into the city away from the direct vicinity of the beach.

scorchia · 28/08/2024 14:38

Always looks so hot when people do this! Wear a dress then you can change easily at beach?

juicelooseabootthishoose · 28/08/2024 14:38

Having been to malaga i would say this is a no. Its quite a smart place. And Spanish locals very well dressed. Yes there are tourists but they are city breakers not beach goers. If you absolutely have to go straight from beach or pool to the centre I would put a linen shirt over or a floaty dress.

StormingNorman · 28/08/2024 14:41

I wouldn’t be wandering around a city in my swimwear. Beachside restaurants yes but nowhere else.

Could you consider a linen or silk shirt over the top of your costume? Both will help keep you cool.

Plump82 · 28/08/2024 14:42

Ok doke, noted that not the best idea. I can't wear a dress as that requires chub rub shorts under and that's just a faff for the beach so would rather wear shorts. Ill have a look for a linen shirt as the shorts I have are linen so that could be quite nice.

@Precipice this is the swimsuit, however not as low cut on me as it is on the model! It's a hard material to describe.

I think that would look nice, it doesn't look different to a bodysuit.

morellamalessdrama · 28/08/2024 14:44

Do you have a white shirt to keep the sun off?

notnorman · 28/08/2024 14:44

Echo the point about Spanish city goers being very stylish.

That was my initial thought that it doesn't scream swimsuit. The other one is similar but a round neck and a very think white and blue stripe.
I always thought the Spanish where stylish and was told the same for Barcelona but I felt anything went the last 2 years we have visited when it came to the beach or a quick casual lunch.

Plump82 · 28/08/2024 14:48

@morellamalessdrama I don't have anything like that but I'm having a look now. I just hope I don't look frumpy as I think shirts can look fab on tall, slim women and that's not me sadly!

I don’t think it is appropriate away from the beach/pool. I would put a very loose and light linen or cotton shirt over the top.

Personally I find wearing swimming costumes very hot and uncomfortable unless you are on the beach/pool etc. They are not breathable and especially if they have hidden support built in, I feel constricted (like I am trussed up!) So the idea of walking around a boiling hot urban landscape in one in the middle of the day makes me feel 🥵

Oh I completely agree but our accommodation is 20 mins from the beach. There's no pool so we have no choice but to walk there and back and we'll probably want to do lunch at some point too. I won't be wearing a swimsuit unless we're going to the beach. I have lots of nice sun dresses for during the day when we're doing other things.

I live in Spain. MNers would have you believe that all Europeans are wafting around stylishly looking effortlessly polished and groomed, no bigger than a size 10 of course. In reality, Spanish cities have as much variety in body shape/size/clothing types/degree of stylishness as UK cities.
A swimsuit such as the one you’ve posted with a pair of shirts will be absolutely fine and no one will bat an eyelid.

Bearpawk · 28/08/2024 14:52

I think the swimsuit in the pic is fine, but if stick a linen shirt over it for being out and about

Plump82 · 28/08/2024 14:57

@SecondFavouriteDinosaur that's great to hear. I'll definitely pack something I can bring out with me just incase and to also cover up if we're still out during the hottest part of the day. But the idea of double layers isn't thrilling.

Forget chub shorts. I live in s hot country. Stick deodorant on the thighs is life changing no more rub for me ;)

ohtowinthelottery · 28/08/2024 15:06

I spent 4 nights staying in Malaga City Centre earlier this Summer and we also walked to the beach - which is a good 20 - 30 min walk. I would echo what others have said. The Spanish in Malaga are very stylish in how they dress. I wouldn't walk around the city in a swimsuit and shorts, although the suggestions to put a light shirt on over it is a good one. I will also say that there are more clothes shops in Malaga than you see in most towns/cities in this country now so if you like clothes shopping/fashion then make sure there's space in your suitcase!

Plump82 · 28/08/2024 15:12

@Maddy70 I've wore snag shorts for years and get on very well with them. Haven't had much success on anything like stick deodorant etc so.
@ohtowinthelottery I'm not much of a shopper but my husband is so I'm preparing myself for being dragged round them!

I think that swim suit is fine to wear with just shorts, it looks very smart, and will just look like a body suit, or a mark, fitted tucked in top with shorts. I do this all the time when on holiday (Recently Mexico, France, and Spain) as don't want to carry changes of clothes around and all that faff. No one has ever commented and tbh, quite often women are walking around in bikini tops and shorts, so it's more modest than that. In the hot weather it'll dry quick enough to then put your shorts on and go out and about your day. You'll be fine op. Maybe take a light shrug type cardigan or something to protect your shoulders and if you want to cover up a little in some places, but honestly no need. It's a very nice costume BTW.

coxesorangepippin · 28/08/2024 15:19

I wouldn't wander around a city wearing just shorts and a swimsuit, no. I'd have the sense to put a t-shirt on. On the beach, fine.

I agree with OP on this. Doesn't work for me and I feel much cooler with thin cycle shorts than with a dress alone. I'm not even that chubby!

Longfrock · 28/08/2024 15:21

I think the swim suit and shorts thing depends how busty you are. I'd wear a top like that to go most places in summer, but I have no bust.

That's a bit rude.
Anyway, I'll get myself a couple of linen shirts and if I feel the need to cover up then at least it will be something cool.
@Gothamcity it was an absolute steal from InTheStyle. They have a great sale on their swimwear just now.

I'm sure you'll look lovely in your linen shirts but will they be any cooler than a tshirt?

Possibly not 😂 but maybe as they're nice and floaty it might be cooler, and open at the front?
