Can anyone style this dress for a cold, wet, Scottish wedding?

I’m venturing out of my comfort zone and have bought a dress that isn’t me to be a guest at a wedding.
Rainbow dress

I have gold flats also.

It’s going to be cold and wet on the day so I need to put some sort of top with it. But I don’t know what?

And I’ll need a bag?
Cost is an issue, cheaper the better at the moment.

Can anyone help? I’m just clueless and worried I’m gonna ruin the whole attempt at fashion by putting a shapeless black cardi with it

This sort of thing?

Now, what I would actually do is buy some fun fur, cut it into a large oblong, and back it with fleece. Very easy to make. Then find a diamanté brooch in a charity shop or Vinted to hold it in place.

Or there's this sort of thing: www.scarfroom.co.uk/products/the-no-37-label-pink-blush-italian-wedding-pashmina-shawl-wrap

I saw someone wearing this dress in Clapham on Sat night and was wowed by it.

I'm inclined to say pointed flats, perhaps Mary-Jane style and .......a pashmina!

I feel like pashminas are on the way in again and let's face it, they're so soft and warm.

I think a jacket would break the lines and flow of the dress, it's empire line and therefore a jacket would just look odd. Cut the dress in the wrong places. Besides its ethereal and a jacket is business/too structured.

This stuff looks amazing in peach. www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1654643865/imitation-feather-lace-fabricfeather

I'd wear a fluffy or satin short jacket, or a pashmina with it as others say. Also potentially take one of those lightweight floaty poncho mac in a sac style waterproofs for hanging about before photos. Have seen similar colours on one on Amazon/eBay like this (I know they come from China, but think would look cool over the dress if it is chucking down ). multicoloured rain coat Or a clear one to appreciate the dress. and a chunky gold handbag eg this, from Mint Velvet

I love this, if you have the budget OP go for this.

If you don't, I'd just wear a trench coat or something over it. You probably don't need another layer for the reception, depending on venue, so an outdoor jacket over it would look fine and you'd get much more use out of it in future. Mango have some nice ones, either classic beige or khaki would work. Do not wear black.

And a clutch bag same colour as your shoes.

@Werweisswohin lucky you, but considering flipping August has been cold and wet throughout the whole UK, I expect things to only get worse as we get into autumn.

Not just in Scotland though.

Why are you taking this so personally? It's a S&B thread, OP is looking for an outfit that's appropriate for a cold wet day and a Scottish wedding. That's all. She's the one going to the wedding, just take her word for it that's what she needs.

I'm not taking anything personally, just questioning the stereotype.

How do you know it will definitely be cold and wet? * *

Because it’s Scotland it’s been cold and wet most of this year.

BashfulClam · 24/08/2024 11:51

Werweisswohin · 24/08/2024 08:40

Hmmm, it's currently warm, sunny and slightly breezy in my part of Scotland.

Lucky you, in my area of Scotland it’s been bucketing down all of last night and this morning. The rain woke me up last night.

No, it hasn't.

Where I live it has. I live in Scotland.

Same here in my part of Scotland it's been wet miserable and very bloody windy for most of the year!
I would team that dress with a faux fur stole and some cream coloured cowgirl boots

I went to the coast in a June and it was Baltic the whole time whereas usually by mid June it can be warm.

We live on the West Coast and we usually get a really great May & June, last year we had a fabulous Summer, but this year has been horrendous. It's like Winter here today

Werweisswohin · 24/08/2024 13:46

Maybe I just have lower expectations of the Scottish weather but we have had some lovely days. If in doubt pack thermal undies though @warningsecurityguards.

eatreadsleeprepeat · 24/08/2024 15:58

Really pretty dress. Like pp I would go for a cropped cream jacket, tweed if it is in the next few weeks, fake fur if later. If tweed then lined will make a big difference to temperature. Maybe a pashmina with you if you want something lighter. There are a lot of crop jackets in the shops at all price points.

I was in Tescos yesterday. I've never bought any item of clothing in Tesco before, but I was walking through the clothing aisle and they had pale champagne-gold-coloured satiny bomber jackets that looked very stylish. I was standing there thinking how great they'd look with jeans for the evening or over a little black dress when a woman came along and grabbed the last of my size. I could have cried. Tesco don't advertise their stock online, but if you're near one of the larger stores check it out in the morning.

Next sell F&F clothes, so you might get it there.

BigSkies2022 · 24/08/2024 16:13

ooh, nice. I read an article recently in which some recommended a rose-pink, satin trench coat to go over a dress for a chilly British summer wedding. Also recommended fancy socks (like sheer sparkly coloured ankle socks) to help keep feet warm in party sandals. If you could find a sheer/silky/drapey coat in a toning colour, would that work for you? - have you thought about hiring something if you don't want to commit to what feels like it might be a one-off item?

Delphiniumandlupins · 24/08/2024 16:37

Werweisswohin · 24/08/2024 07:08

I live in Scotland too. It's definitely not always cold and wet.

No it's not always. That's why I qualified with "if it's this year" because we have had a particularly bad summer and seem to be rushing into autumn. I'm Glasgow area, it hasn't rained all day every day, but it does feel as if we have had fewer than usual really "nice" days.

Ryeman · 24/08/2024 21:11

Lots of pp suggesting something fluffy or furry which I agree would look nice but I’ve often seen brides wear fur capes or similar at chilly weddings so I’d worry I might match the bride. I would consider leather for something more edgy and definitely non-bridal.

Snowwhitedove · 24/08/2024 21:15

I’d say that whatever you wear needs to be cropped well above the waist to work. I’d go for more of a shrug/bolero, this kind of thing…..
