How to style this dress?

Just looking for opinions please. I bought this dress for a wedding:
https://www.whistles.com/product/serpent-jacquard-midi-dress-38276.html#navAjax=true&is=false&cgid=Dresses_Sale_WW&sz=60&start=0&isSecondPage=false&prefn1=refinementColor&prefv1=Blue&pid=serpent-jacquard-midi-dress-38276&pos=2
With the intention of wearing it with a black blazer and black suede platforms. However, having tried it all together, it just doesnt work. The black and blue is just too much contrast and a bit '80s' and the length of the jacket is just not right, too long and does nothing for the look of the dress. So, im thinking this jacket would work better, perhaps with gold platforms?

Im think its a complimentary colour to the blue and adding a touch of gold would lift it. Perhaps it would be a more modern look?
Opinions welcome!

Nice dress, when is the wedding as what you put it with will. We’d to be weather appropriate.

heldinadream · 17/08/2024 18:26

I think you need to try them together but just looking at them, yes, I think that jacket could look lovely with the dress.

Aria999 · 17/08/2024 18:27

Does it need a blazer? It has long sleeves. I feel like covering it up would spoil its stylish lines.

How about silver accessories like in the picture?

PollyIndia · 17/08/2024 18:31

I think I'd probably go a long coat if the weather needed it, eg a trench, rather than a blazer. Also not sure about that Mango blazer. Yes to gold heels though, they'll look great.

Ineedaholidayyyy · 17/08/2024 18:32

What is the purpose of the jacket , is it for style purposes or to add some warmth? I
think the dress would look better on its own, I'm not keen on the brown jacket either.

Like the dress, but a pity to squash and cover those full sleeves with a blazer. The silver sandals look good with it!

Agreed. MN is obsessed with blazers. I think a blazer will look terible with that dress.

Aria999 · 17/08/2024 18:41

Or maybe dark green (though I prefer the silver)

Eg www.nordstromrack.com/s/vince-camuto-bivenya-ankle-strap-sandal-women/7465452

I don't think the gold blazer would go but I don't really like contrast colors in clothes.

Tillytess · 17/08/2024 18:42

Thanks for all the comments, much appreciated. The jacket is purely for style reasons rather than warmth as we won’t be outside any length of time. I don’t know why, but I always feel underdressed at a wedding without a jacket 🙄😂. It’s an October wedding.

Also, I wouldn’t be keeping the jacket on very long.

Aria999 · 17/08/2024 18:45

You could get a hat or fascinator to make yourself feel more formal

I can't think of any jacket shape that would really work with those full sleeves

Sidebeforeself · 17/08/2024 18:50

The dress is lovely but I really don’t like the jacket - sorry. I agree that the sleeves need to be seen. October wedding ( UK?) means you’ll probably need an outer layer so a classic beige trench could look really stylish

Tillytess · 17/08/2024 18:55

Mmm lots of food for thought there, thank you! I’m afraid I do t suit any kind of head gear but maybe I should re think the whole jacket idea. Perhaps a longer coat or do without 🤔

Tbh I think jackets rarely look good over dresses unless specifically designed for each other.

Changingplace · 17/08/2024 21:01

I don’t think that dress needs any kind of jacket/blazer at all, it wouldn’t have occurred to me to add one and I’d ditch the idea and just wear the dress, it’s lovely on its own.

hazandduck · 17/08/2024 21:05

The Mango jacket sleeves would be shorter than the dress sleeves wouldn’t they and the cuffs of the dress are chunky so would probably bunch up and be uncomfortable. I agree it doesn’t need a jacket it’s a lovely dress but as it’s an autumn wedding if you want to wear a jacket could you just wear it on your shoulders so the sleeves aren’t covered up?

Sidebeforeself · 17/08/2024 21:06

It’s not just about being outside though ( if you are in the UK)..churches, hotels etc can be quite chilly

SuperPug · 17/08/2024 21:12

The silver accessories are perfect in the photo on their website. I would choose those and delicate silver shoes/high heels/flats.
Agree that a blazer would look odd and out of place. I think a smart coat is better for late evening when leaving or if it’s colder than expected. Fascintators seem a little outdated.

SuperPug · 17/08/2024 21:13

Clearly gold when zoomed in 😂

Tillytess · 17/08/2024 21:26

Thanks so much for all your input. It’s lovely to get objective views and has given me lots to consider. Lots of ideas I hadnt thought of. Thank you 😁

To get to and sit in the church I'd wear the smartest, weather appropriate coat or jacket, which looked ok over the dress, leaving it open to show the dress.

I've never been at a wedding hotel or other formal event venue which hasn't set its temperature on the assumption that female guests might be wearing thin/ flimsy/sleeveless/ backless outfits and male guests can take their ties and jackets off.

If I really thought the venue would be cold I'd carry, but not wear, an oversized scarf / shawl which could go round shoulders if needed. I doubt that it would be with a long sleeved dress

Danish brand Baum und Pferdgarten have a jacket called Bebeth which comes in various colours and materials which would work. It's very boxy and the sleeves are wideset. It accomodates full sleeves. I bought 1 in navy and 1 in black for that purpose.

French brand Casey Casey's Juliette jacket is the same.

These jackets are exceptions to my rule that jackets aren't that great over dresses.

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle yes the sleeves on that could work but they look a bit short (the dress sleeves might stick awkwardly out the ends).

I personally don't like jackets that button all the way up (prefer the kind with a sleek minimalist neckline ending in a button below the boobs) but that's a personal thing.

On the Bebeth jackets I fold the sleeves back into a cuff (the sleeves carry the outer material 3 inches or so back into the sleeve before the lining starts so they can be folded into a cuff) so dress sleeves are deliberately longer than the jacket sleeve.
