How to style this dress?

Just looking for opinions please. I bought this dress for a wedding:
https://www.whistles.com/product/serpent-jacquard-midi-dress-38276.html#navAjax=true&is=false&cgid=Dresses_Sale_WW&sz=60&start=0&isSecondPage=false&prefn1=refinementColor&prefv1=Blue&pid=serpent-jacquard-midi-dress-38276&pos=2
With the intention of wearing it with a black blazer and black suede platforms. However, having tried it all together, it just doesnt work. The black and blue is just too much contrast and a bit '80s' and the length of the jacket is just not right, too long and does nothing for the look of the dress. So, im thinking this jacket would work better, perhaps with gold platforms?

Im think its a complimentary colour to the blue and adding a touch of gold would lift it. Perhaps it would be a more modern look?
Opinions welcome!

Love the dress @Tillytess

Don't wear a jacket, find a pashmina to match your shoes - google what coulours match or find a free colour wheel online. Match earrings and/or a fascinator too.

Have fun!

I like the idea of a poncho or wrap of some sort. Complimentary colours are yellows, oranges, corals, gold or even hot pink! But that’s out my comfort zone 😁. Thanks, will take a look at jackets suggested and check out pashmina idea 👍

Definitely no to jacket, wrap or poncho that cover most of the dress. Smart coat/outerwear jacket in church if chilly then just the dress at the reception.
keep accessories simple and muted as the dress is quite a statement in itself.

This 100%.

Dunno about anyone else but I suggested a jacket as outerwear for the walk from the car to the church and in the church itself as they’re not usually noted for their warmth. I might even fling on a scarf as well.
It wouldn’t occur to me to wear a jacket at the reception unless the heating broke down. It’s a lovely dress, it deserves to be seen.

Muthaofcats · 18/08/2024 18:11

Definitely not the brown jacket; wouldn’t go at all, style or colour wise.

If you need a jacket I’d go for a tailored black full length coat but think you’d get away without one.

I think hot pink or gold/silver for the shoes.

FindingMeno · 18/08/2024 18:25

Definitely no to the blazer.
The silver looks amazing with that colour though

Saxendi · 18/08/2024 18:26

It's a lovely dress, I definitely don't think a jacket would be right with it, I'd just concentrate on really nice shoes and bag.

Tillytess · 18/08/2024 21:31

I blame my jacket obsession on my mother 😂. It seems that the ceremony is in the same venue as reception so not outside much at all. Thanks for everyone’s input, especially the comment that the dress is a ‘statement’ in itself. I thought it was quite conservative so perhaps I’m not so stuffy after all😁. Will concentrate on accessories. Thanks all!

Jacket colour is spot on. But the sleeves may rumple up over the dress, which has sleeves full at the cuff. Could look odd. Jacket suggested by @IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle would look much better.

Violetpearls · 18/08/2024 22:46

I don't think it needs a jacket as it has lovely long sleeves. I'd just get some really nice shoes, bag and necklace to compliment it. It's a lovely dress by the way X

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 19/08/2024 00:44

Unless you are top table level I wouldn’t worry about needing a jacket for formality reasons! The dress is lovely on its own and adding a jacket would be too much with the sleeves. I’d go for gold shoes and bag.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 19/08/2024 00:49

And nooooo don’t do a pashmina! Please 🤣

I love the Baum und Pferdgarten jacket linked above though.

ChellyT · 19/08/2024 04:18

Your dress is beautiful! If you must wear a jacket/coat why not wear it on your shoulders and the easy to take off as well? The sleeves are too lovely to be crushed in a jacket sleeve

Chrispackhamspoodle · 19/08/2024 04:29

Long black tailored coat if freezing. No coat at reception.I'd wear silver accessories/sandals with that colour.I'd probably concentrate on the earrings and a bracelet.

Scarzo · 19/08/2024 06:10

What about a cape? I have no idea about this website in particular, but I think something in this sort of style that doesn't hide the sleeves might work.

No. The dress doesn't need a jacket and it definitely doesn't need a cape like that.

HorseSnorts · 19/08/2024 14:09

Gorgeous dress. I like the idea that if you need a jacket or coat wear it over your shoulders until you can get rid of it.

Very classy looking.

Sandpitnotmoshpit · 19/08/2024 14:11

Long sleeved dresses look odd with jackets. Either dress and coat or short sleeved or sleeveless coat with jacket.

IdLikeToBeAFraser · 19/08/2024 15:27

Just to say I agree with everyone else that a jacket would be unnecessary. A good pashmina/shawl in case it's chilly at any point will be fine. Admittedly I have a lovely grey/silver with pink accent ones that would be perfect with this dress, so I could be biased!

I also think accessories can be gold or silver depending on your usual preference.

Threetrees745 · 19/08/2024 16:16

Another one who doesn't think a blazer jacket would look good with this style of dress. Sorry.
I wouldn't wear a blazer to a formal event at all unless it was part of a trouser suit And even then more boxy, oversized blazers tend to be more fashionable these days which are more casual.
However I have noticed a lot of people on MN seem to want to pair dresses with blazers?
