Yup, another one who spends a lot of time thinking about clothes. @Floisme I think if anyone analysed inside my head an inordinate amount of brainpower goes on thinking about clothes and remembering song lyrics, embarrassingly.

@Redandblue11 sadly I don't have any of my summer maxi skirts anymore (bar one maxi dress)I presume as they were too flimsy to last. I might put those on a summer wishlist.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 24/12/2024 10:59

Oh, the clothes that I regret throwing out, too! I haven't regretted many purchases but I do regret some ditchings.

Floisme · 24/12/2024 12:07

At least I never ditched the vintage clothes. Some of them got worn to pieces and some spent most of the 1980s in bin liners cos I had no storage space but, although it never occurred to me that they might become collectable, I still had the sense to hang on to them even during spells when I wasn't wearing them.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 24/12/2024 13:06

One of the many things I won't throw out and absent a serious Victorian style illness will never fit into. It's cotton sateen, fully lined, 6 working buttons on the cuff.

It was worn with a very fine black merino ankle lenghth wrap around skirt which fastened with buckles and straps and came with an instruction sheet. I still have the skirt too. Come NY I think I'll ask my dressmaker if she can remodel it. There's metres of material but the buttons and buckles don't work for me now.

That's lovely.

If it wasn't packed away out of easy reach I would raise you my Laura Ashley 'milkmaid dress', bought for my 18th, made in Wales, UK size 10 which would probably be a 6 or a 4 in today's money.

Joyeux Noël, tout le monde et Bonne Année! (Autocorrect wants to make that Bonne Annie)

Papyrophile · 24/12/2024 19:50

No fanfare but Joyeux Noel et Bonne Annee a tous. Et merci beaucoup bien a tous. You have all made 2024 a better and nicer year for me. This thread is a fil of sanity in a world that's mostly mad and it's a refuge. I love talking clothes but the companionship is the thing. Thank you all, very very deeply.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 24/12/2024 20:58

Merry Christmas and a guid New Year tae ane and a.

Tatare · 25/12/2024 05:16

All the happies.

The best to you all.

I went to a Catholic mass last week. I'm culturally Catholic since birth and have avoided for years.

It made me cry. I loved it.

I feel somewhat conflicted now.

Anyhoo. The best of whatever religion or feelings through the dark months gets you through.

Loves. X

Merry Christmas. How wonderful is to have you all, this thread as part of my life .

Merry Christmas and a lovely 2025 to everyone! 2025 sounds like living in the future!!

I have a hair-splitting dilemma as I can't decide whether to buy a cabin suitcase that is 55x40x23 or 55x35x23... I spent literally hours today looking at different airlines. All those that used to be normal, like BA, SAS, KLM, etc allow 55x45x25 and I have no hopes for easyJet or ryanair but I am stuck because ITA is 55x35x23 and I am just thinking about how often I will be flying to Rome and whereabouts... I have friends living in Italy and I do go, not often enough... But I fly for work much more often with the usual airlines. And it is a whole 5 cm/ translates into 5 l!!! Talk sense into me, I am stuck!

botemp · 28/12/2024 18:12

IME only the budget airlines actually police the size of luggage and then usually only at airports where they're the main airline.

It's been a long while since I flew with Alitalia but they were always very laxe, but that was nothing compared to Italian security if you were a solo female flying Shock the number of crimes I could have committed, honestly...

I've also experienced every time I've flown with mainstream airlines lately people have huge oversized bags all the time and I always get a notification the day before that I can check my bag for free as the plane is fully booked as overhead space will be limited. So I'd go for the larger size, you might have the odd time where you'll have to pay extra but that's preferable (to me anyhow) to always having to pack one less pair of shoes or never being able to buy something while away as there's no room to take anything back.

Easyjet allows everyone a maximum size of 45 x 36 x 20 cm. You can also bring an additional large cabin bag (max. 56 x 45 x 25 cm, including any handles and wheels). You have to book and pay for this but in the whole scheme of things it's peanuts really. You get Speedy Boarding with it. I usually buy this option.

Redandblue11 · 28/12/2024 18:35

I agree with pps , go with the larger one!

Redandblue11 · 28/12/2024 18:37

I have flown quite a lot with Ryanair and easyJet lately and they were very lax checking the size of bag. Not guaranteed to be always the case but most of the time yes ime.

botemp · 28/12/2024 18:42

micro to add, what I'd mostly concern myself with is how much the collapsible handle takes up internally. Usually in the cheaper models it's very bulky and you have less usable internal space. The more expensive ones marketed as lightweight usually have better internal space.

microbius · 28/12/2024 19:23

Thank you so much, mes amies, you saved me!! I am going to go for the bigger one, samsonite, - hopefully it would last a bit.

Redandblue11 · 29/12/2024 11:50

Incidentally, my cabin bag has just died! So I might be getting a samsonite too . I have not looked yet, are there in the sales @microbius ?

microbius · 29/12/2024 18:35

Red, I bought this one from here
There is a discount on black and green colours

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 30/12/2024 07:32

Is it able to be zipped to make smaller/unzipped to make bigger? I bought a Delsey cabin bag recently with this feature that's surprisingly good. I got it because it's light, and I think when zipped fits the EasyJet requirements as I usually go EJ when I fly, but the zip thing is very handy.

It is this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07NC71FQS/ref=pe270633611485629781TEEitem?th=1

Mind, these days I usually check in bags - it means you don't have to queue for ages at the departure gate, to be sure of getting a space in a locker near to you, and so few people do check in luggage these days that I find I don't have to wait long at the carousel.

microbius · 30/12/2024 11:27

Yes, Poppy, the one I bought is extendable. Yours looks capacious!

botemp · 31/12/2024 15:51

Happy almost Bonne Annie Grin, everyone. I know 2024 has been very trying for some of you so here's to better times ahead and new beginnings 🥂

I seem to have decided to end 2024 with a shit ton of orders, mostly prompted by not being able to choose so just ordering everything Blush And now contemplating another at the last minute (code expires at midnight) but I'd have to pay for express shipping otherwise it won't get here in time before being on the move again. Decisions, decisions 🤔

(Sorry, couldn't resist embracing the typo quirky, it sounds more cheerful than the proper Bonne Année. The German greeting of Guten Rutsch which means a good jump/slide, forward actionable momentum, will remain my favourite though.)

Buen Año!
For sailing in calm waters, filled with loveliness and wonderful outfits to all!

I have also ordered a lot of stuff that has arrived today … I don’t have time to open and try … as getting ready for an early departure tomorrow morning. My celebrations will be contained.
Still, I am pretty sure is nowhere near the amount that Bo has ordered!
Although I think one of my most expensive buys is a very practical one, leather skiing mittens and doesn’t count at all as clothing in my vocabulary. DH thinks otherwise.
