Wavy hair ladies - help!

My hair used to be straight, but I’ve been having hormonal issues and it’s gone wavy. If I dry it - naturally or with a hair dryer- it’s a bit bouffant and horrible.

So I bought some curl cream and have scrunched it whilst it’s drying and it still looks awful 😩

I want to embrace my hair and not straighten it but at my old age I don’t know how to deal with it to make my hair shiny again? My hair is in good nick but it’s just drying unpleasantly.

thanks

This is me! It's like being 14 all over again and being clueless on how to manage your own hair.

I use 3 to 4 pumps of the original frizz ease when wet and brush a couple of times.with a tangle teaser. Then dry naturally and use a hairdryer when about 80% dry. It calms it down a fair bit.

I wasn’t expecting it at all and I’m a bit sad - I love wavy hair but my hair used to be shiny and this hair is not!

I hadn’t considered frizz ease, I wonder if that might be a good shout. I bought a really well reviewed curl cream but it’s not done much to be honest

I use very moisturising shampoo and conditioner, and try to avoid silicones. Currently using Aveeno colour protect shampoo and Garnier hair food conditioner, both thick and very moisturising. Towel dry by blotting, don't rub. Use a wide tooth comb to comb through instead of a brush, and leave to air dry. In the mornings if it's looking a bit frizzy or pouffy I spritz it with a little water and hand scrunch the waves back in and leave to air dry.
It took me a long time to find this routine but it works for me.

GreenSmithing · 30/07/2024 18:01

Curl cream is for curly hair and may be too heavy for wavy hair. Look for products that say lightweight. Frizz ease do a lighter serum thar might help. But wavy hair never really looks as shiny as straight.

Onehappymam · 30/07/2024 18:02

I’ve just started embracing my waves.

Which curl cream did you buy? Boots Curl Crème (pale pink tub) is great - and cheap! I’ve been experimenting over the last couple of weeks with various products and techniques. This is what works for me:

Wash & condition your hair, comb through conditioner with a wide tooth comb before rinsing. Don’t brush your hair after this! Flip your head upside down and scrunch the curl crème into it. Leave to dry naturally. Scrunch every now and then to get rid of the crispness & ruffle up the roots once it’s dry. Rearrange into a parting once dry.

The next day, or whenever it’s looking past its best I spritz with a water bottle, flip my head upside down and scrunch some more. Keep spritzing and scrunching!

EasterlyDirections · 30/07/2024 18:09

Mine's wavy, the Boots curl creme is far too heavy for it. I use Umberto Gianni mousse. Comb with a wet brush under the shower when rinsing off conditioner, microfibre turban on tightly for ten mins or so, scrunch through some mousse then either air dry completely or hover a hairdryer with a diffuse over the surface till fairly dry. When completely dry separate the curls a bit with fingers and crunch away any stiffness.

That’s the one I bought! I thought I’d go with it as the reviews were so good and it was so cheap - I like the smell.

Okay, a few people have mentioned a wide toothed comb so maybe I need to invest in one of them.

It’s a really slight/loose wave too, it has very little definition which is more annoying as it just looks…blah

You need to add the curl cream when your hair is soaking wet. I wash with Alberto balsam raspberry conditioner, rinse then add as a leave in. I brush when wet only then add curl cream and gel. I’ll diffuse until it’s 75% dry then leave it.

use a satin pillow case hat to protect when asleep. Lot of hoo haa but worth it !

Wellwhatalovelyday · 30/07/2024 18:38

Same boat here. I’m going to try merwave i think

zeddybrek · 30/07/2024 18:40

What also helped was finding out my hairs porosity and using products designed for mine, which is low porosity.

I did add it wet! And I’ve got a silk pillowcase. I wonder if it’s just too heavy for my hair type.

Aussie do a great curly product. Not a cream, more like a serum. And spray first with Tresemme spray.

I always blow dry on a work day, never without a diffuser.

I hate Frizz Ease.

Piggywaspushed · 30/07/2024 19:02

I also wet my hair every day. I can't understand how people with waves don't!)

Appalonia · 30/07/2024 19:05

Do you use a diffuser when you dry your hair? I find that makes a big difference with my way hair. I also use Boots curl creme, love it!

No, I haven’t heard of a diffuser! Argh, so much to learn!

Go to a hairdressers and ask for help. Try and find one who knows curls.

I don't soak mine but either wet my hands or my wet brush and run through and scrunch again.

Piggywaspushed · 30/07/2024 19:26

I just have a shower every morning!

Cadela · 30/07/2024 19:31

My hair is the same, it wants to be curly but is in the annoying bit where some of it is and most of it is wavy. So I end up looking quite mad mostly.

The best thing I have done is put my hair products in the shower so I apply them when my hair is absolutely dripping.

Alberto Balsam do a blue gel on Amazon for a quid and this is by far the best product I’ve found. I wash/condition my hair as normal and then before squeezing any water out I tip my head upside down and scrunch the gel through. I then either let it dry naturally which takes ages, or gently diffuse to take most of the wet out.

It then goes crunchy and weird but I use a hair oil and scrunch that through and it breaks the gel up and makes it shiny and lovely. If I do it perfectly I get a pretty good result!

I don't, my hair is thick and quite dry/coarse, water just makes it floofy. Most mornings it needs more moisture to calm it down, I add a bit of oil or leave in conditioner.

I find that curly hair is not all the same.
My friend dries hers with a diffuser and that works for her, I end up a frizzy mess.

What works for me is washing my hair before bed then going to sleep with my hair still wet... It then dries incredibly slowly overnight and I wake up to smooth waves that stay smooth. Miracle.
