Wavy hair ladies - help!

My hair used to be straight, but I’ve been having hormonal issues and it’s gone wavy. If I dry it - naturally or with a hair dryer- it’s a bit bouffant and horrible.

So I bought some curl cream and have scrunched it whilst it’s drying and it still looks awful 😩

I want to embrace my hair and not straighten it but at my old age I don’t know how to deal with it to make my hair shiny again? My hair is in good nick but it’s just drying unpleasantly.

thanks

I use a mousse and gel and get a cut from a curl specialist
It's desperate for a cut but this is mine. Usually lightweight products but with strong hold
My fave is John Frieda dream curls mousse and treluxe gel

That's beautiful hair!

But not wavy - that's definitley curly!

Piggywaspushed · 31/07/2024 07:01

BTW, OP, have you ever said how long your hair is?

spikeandbuffy · 31/07/2024 07:35

@Piggywaspushed honestly I'm definitely a wavy hair! The top layer is a bit tighter but all of underneath is waves

Loopytiles · 31/07/2024 07:39

I didn’t get on with Merwave, tried the sequence of products (£60!) around 10 times, following the video advice, but every time it was wavy but in a bad 90s perm, crunchy way. Also tried skipping different products and the results were still not good.

FeckOffNowLads · 31/07/2024 07:44

I don’t blow dry my hair at all, just put it on a bun and sleep overnight, wake up with fairly smooth curls.

weekly hair mask using argan oil
argan oil spray daily
clarifying shampoo only

I only wash my hair every five days too, it’s so much drier than it used to be.

LaWench · 31/07/2024 08:02

I use a spray in conditioner/ frizz spray and heat protector when wet and comb through with wide toothed comb. Scrunch through curl mousse and plop upside down and wrap in an old t-shirt. Leave to almost dry then diffuse on low power, high heat to set the waves. My hair is 2A and 2B and easy enough to blow dry straight but sometimes I embraces the waves.

PickAChew · 31/07/2024 08:16

It's very much trial and error. My coarse, thick, low porosity wavy hair doesn't like anything heavy. Yesterday's wash was vosene then schwarzkopf silver shampoo (it really the sulphates and my scalp gets disgusting without the vosene), conditioned with Shea Moisture power greens and rinsed well, then a drop of kinky curly knot today combed through while dripping wet, then some treluxe hi definition gel. It looks nice today. Will need another wash, tomorrow. This combination does nothing at all for it in winter.

Really? Works amazingly on mine! I do have very thick fluffy wavy hair

Loopytiles · 31/07/2024 19:49

Interesting!! Mine is fine.

Grazie234 · 31/07/2024 20:51

Interesting thread, I'm in a similar place. My hair has been straight since teens and now I'm in my late 30s and it's a mixture of fine waves and a few corkscrew curls up front while still being annoyingly straight at the back. Just to add to my annoyance it's fine and flyaway and going grey super quickly. I'm going to have a proper read through this thread to see what I can try, I've already tried curl creme but it's too heavy for my hair.

The curl crème was a disaster, I tried it again yesterday and woke up this morning with hideous hair. I guess it’s going to be an expensive game of hair Russian roulette!

Edited

The game changer for me has not been using "curl" products meant for curly hair, when mine is wavy not curly - curling products are much richer and aimed at moisturising very coarse, wiry hair. Waves need bounce and lightness, too much moisture just pulls them flat, bouffant or greasy.

Piggywaspushed · 01/08/2024 06:44

OP, you'd be better off doing some googling/ asking on local SM for a hairdresser who is good with curls and waves. Many aren't, including some extremely fancy ones. They will cut it properly which will be a start.

I'm the same with the creams. Aussie serum was a game changer (you need a tiny amount). But I also never do my hair at night - always the morning. Bed head !

wandawaves · 01/08/2024 07:15

Do any of you wavy haired people have a fringe? I'm curious about trying one, but I think it'd turn into a springy mess...

LaWench · 01/08/2024 07:28

I've tried a fringe, they dont suit me and need straightening everyday to look good. Otherwise it's all pointing in different directions.

KatieKat88 · 01/08/2024 07:31

I reckon I'm a mix of 2a/2b and mine gets quite frizzy - any suggestions of which products to try to begin with? I usually just blast with a hairdryer and then straighten/use a straightener to curl it but that's probably terrible for it... I'd like to embrace my natural hair a bit more!

bigTillyMint · 01/08/2024 07:41

Could anyone link to the Aussie serum please?

I have extra very thick hair which is straightish but with a slight wave, but I’d like to try no blowdrying / straightening whilst we are on holiday, without ending up looking like Crystal Tips!

Piggywaspushed · 01/08/2024 07:52

I look like Crystal Tips sometimes too (although less so than I did years ago).

I don't like most Aussie products as they smell too strong but I spent ages looking for something non coconutty and found this and it's great for me.

bigTillyMint · 01/08/2024 07:55

Brilliant, thank you!

NippyCrab · 01/08/2024 08:11

@RedPoster if your hair has developed only a slight wave actual curl products will not worn for your hair. Stop using the curl cream, don't use a leave in either. These things will make your hair stringy. Unfortunately having Wurly hair is a hit and miss with products. Is your hair all one length or layered? I have fine hair, lots of it and my hair is a mix of 2a to 2c waves or wurls as I call them. It's a pest! I got bangs cut in a while ago and my wave ended up a cows lick lol.
I use Umberto Gianni banana and coconut shampoo and conditioner when my hair needs moisture, also the garnier banana mask. I rarely use styling products, I have 4 drawers full of things I've tried 😅. UG beach gel or the curl gel is good, a sea salt spray also is good for textured waves. Without seeing your hair it will be difficult to advise as all waves are different. Don't go to bed with wet hair it stretches it, dry it to at least 3/4, I twist mine up in a pineapple to stop frizz.
I'm sorry this is a ramble I'm super tired this morning.
In Boots at the waves and curl section it tells you which products are suitable for wavy. Avoid Cantu too heavy, avoid anything shea or butters, again more for Curls and coils.

NippyCrab · 01/08/2024 08:13

Sorry I'm not more help but it's a minefield of videos and products for waves and curls. The one thing I bought and what works is my bounce curl brush, I bought it from naturalistic as direct from bouncecurl is expensive for shipping. It comes in beige and green. Beware of fakes.

I’ve just started embracing my waves.

Which curl cream did you buy? Boots Curl Crème (pale pink tub) is great - and cheap! I’ve been experimenting over the last couple of weeks with various products and techniques. This is what works for me:

Wash & condition your hair, comb through conditioner with a wide tooth comb before rinsing. Don’t brush your hair after this! Flip your head upside down and scrunch the curl crème into it. Leave to dry naturally. Scrunch every now and then to get rid of the crispness & ruffle up the roots once it’s dry. Rearrange into a parting once dry.

The next day, or whenever it’s looking past its best I spritz with a water bottle, flip my head upside down and scrunch some more. Keep spritzing and scrunching!

This but I splash out on the curly girl range....got a travel pack to try. I also use their mousse. Never brush hair just fingers and spritz. I let it dry naturally

PickAChew · 01/08/2024 09:11

For a much lighter but inexpensive and readily available curly/wavy styler, try the Cantu curl custard. It's a very gloopy gel rather than a cream and I find that it calms my hair's crystal tips tendencies and encourages clumping even though it doesn't encourage a lot of extra curl in it.

AppleStrudel23 · 01/08/2024 09:23

So my hair is wavy bordering on curly but is frizzy and annoying when I try and do my natural curls. The only thing that looks good is if I get it a tiny bit damp, use a leave in conditioner and oil on the ends and then split it in half like two low pigtails, twist the hair loosley so it's twisted away from my face and then I tie the ends together and clip it to the top my head before I sleep and also would then sleep in a satin bonnet and in the morning I've got nice loose curls like a blow out and because my hair is textured it keeps hold of it and isn't frizzy
