Does your hair get Wavy as you age?

This really. I'm almost 50 and my previously poker straight hair has become wavy if left to dry naturally

Should I embrace the wave? How do I do that without looking like I've been dragged through a hedge.

Mine was dead straight and is now wavy. I love it! I sometimes scrunch gel in, especially in damp weather. It looks nice with the top bit back in a hair clip. Or I straighten it which also looks nice. So good to have different styles so easily. It does sometimes look frizzy but then I just put it up or in a French plait.

Oh, just your post @poppym12

Glad I'm not alone. Do you have to work at managing it now? I miss the scrunch and go days.

Mine! Straight greasy hair all my life; meno hit and I got wavey, but not enough to go curly girl... roots greasy, lengths dry and frizzy, how about that... 🙄

I quite like the wave though, it looks softer on my older face - when I straighten it, the contrast seems to highlight the sag and wrinkles. I'm fascinated by the greying process on my auburn hair too - nature's highlights! 🤪

I find that Garnier Hair Food is good if I use it in the lower half of my hair. My DM has been telling me to cut it short since I hit puberty, and has stepped up her insistence lately, but I find that having it shoulder length pulls it down straighter a bit.

If I had it cut to her taste, I would look like Grumio...

Crikeyalmighty · 13/01/2025 19:07

Yes mibexwentxwavy too, especially if it rains or gets wet

AlteredStater · 13/01/2025 19:11

Mine is exactly the same as I near 70. Straight but waves up at the ends. The only thing that's different is I have about half as much as I used to have.

CaptainMyCaptain · 13/01/2025 19:12

Mine got curlier after menopause.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 13/01/2025 19:15

My Dad said "If you don't eat your crusts (bread) you won't have curly hair"

Did you eat a lot of crusts? They can take a long time to work - apparently.

Youtookmyhandle · 13/01/2025 19:20

Mine has done the opposite. I now have dead-straight hair. I lose a lot of it every day due to menopause, but it's in great condition.

In all honesty, @ReignOfError, I'm just glad when I can't see too much scalp shining through on the top these days. Whether it decides to curl or wave doesn't bother me now but I can't seem to accept the thinning.

TallisTheTruffle · 15/01/2025 10:34

Mine used to be a mass of poofy non-conformist curls but as I have aged it has settled into lovely waves which I love now!
I don't see it as something that I have to 'manage', I just like it as it is, it doesn't need any special care or product, I just braid it for an hour and then let them loose.

I have found that as I grow older (I am past meno at 50) it seems happier and softer, and really suits my face better than ironed flat. That whole look seems tired and old to me nowadays. I prefer some natural volume.

There's a fab Reddit sub called wavyhair and curlyhair worth checking out for inspo pics. Too much faff about curly girl method for my tastes but the pictures are great.

LostittoBostik · 15/01/2025 10:35

Mine was ringlets in my 20s. Now it's flopped down to a frizzy wave despite the endless products I use to help.

I think hair just changes as you age - no knowing which way it will go.

So jealous! Does the wave not come with frizz? My frizz is insane and none of my old tricks work anymore. I feel more hedge like than ever

katmarie · 15/01/2025 11:20

I'm 43, and my hair is going greyer and definitely wavier as I get older. It used to be very fine and dead straight. I now have the dragged through a hedge look a pp mentioned, with some straight bits (on top, at the front) and some mega wavey bits, underneath at the back mostly.

I'm liking the fact that I have volume in my hair for the first time in my life, but it does look untidy if I don't make an effort with it. If I try the curly girl method I get very thin curls, because it's still very fine. But it's a lot of faffing about, and it still looks messy to me after so many years of neat, straight hair. So mostly I wash and condition it with a biotin and collagen shampoo and conditioner, and then brush it out wet, and leave it to dry naturally. If it needs to look polished I blow dry it straight with a big round brush, or put it up in a bun or something.

SnapdragonToadflax · 16/01/2025 10:38

Mine definitely is. It's very weird! I've had straight hair all my life, now suddenly at 42/43 the underneath has developed a very definite, probably 2b-ish, wave. Unfortunately the top layer is still mostly straight and it's too much effort to get a wave into it, so now if I want it to look nice I have to straighten it all.

(And yes I know how to do curly girl/encourage waves etc - it doesn't work. I'm hoping it gets more wavy as I get older)

noobiedoobie · 16/01/2025 16:10

Mine has. Combo of washing it less during lockdown and age.

I've just been trying to embrace the wave with the CGM with mixed results! I think I'm leaning more towards aiming for a nice blow dry style and maybe trying some heated rollers.

Before - naturally dried with no product

After - leave in conditioner and hair gel then scrunched and put in a microfibre towel to dry

noobiedoobie · 16/01/2025 16:13

Yes I can't get used to the messy look with CGM. I'm going to give it another try without using sulfates and a bit more technique, as it's useful to have a method where I can let it dry naturally, but I can't see myself wearing it like this for work atm!

This video was helpful and is my inspiration (thick hair..)

MissyB1 · 16/01/2025 16:14

mine has very awkwardly gone wavy/frizzy on one side, dead straight on the other! Great impossible to get into any style now 🙄

IWilloBeACervix · 16/01/2025 16:22

I’ve gone from having a slight wave in my hair to straight on top and curls (actual ringlets) at the back. I had a short bob for years, so I don’t know when it kicked in, but growing my hair out I’ve ended up with layers, so the straight bits don’t sit so heavily on the curly bits. When it works, I really like it, but when it doesn’t I either get frizzy hair or I have no volume on the bottom half.

I make my own linseed gel, which is really easy to do, so I get some moisture into it. I tend to leave it 3-4 days between washes.

I can’t look sleek anymore, unless I tie it back. And then I need a bunch of hair clips to deal with the layers. If I blow dry it, it looks awful. The hairdresser blow dries it week, but I’ve not learnt how to do it nicely.

hopefully I’ll learn how to manage it before it changes again.

snobcat · 16/01/2025 16:27

My hair went from being poker straight to straight but frizzy with an unruly kink - I started getting ads for Merwave after googling what to do about it and bought one of their starter kits with shampoo, conditioner, mousse etc - waves are much more pronounced now and no frizz!! Highly recommend
