Does your hair get Wavy as you age?

This really. I'm almost 50 and my previously poker straight hair has become wavy if left to dry naturally

Should I embrace the wave? How do I do that without looking like I've been dragged through a hedge.

Not necessarily. Mine is wavy/curly at 64 and has been since I was a teen (it was straight before that). I have a friend with poker straight hair, and it's been like that all her life - she's 67. I have another friend, 80 next week, who also has very straight hair.

I resent the inference however that anyone with wavy hair looks like they have been dragged through a hedge! I actually often have people admire my hair, and say they wish they had a wave in theirs.

courtyardofhope · 30/07/2024 09:49

I think it's hormonal. Mine was poker straight as a child but now is wave/beach curls. Haven't quite managed the whole CGM thing yet so I always just look out of control

MooBaggage · 30/07/2024 09:50

Yep - 55 here and since the menopause, my poker straight, greasy all my life hair has turned into dry, wavy hair and I have no clue what to do with it! It's starting to go grey, which I really like, but I wish it didn't look so frizzy all the time - I like the waves but don't know how to de-frizz them...

Authorinwaiting · 30/07/2024 09:52

I
Apologise for the badly written remark about being dragged through a hedge!

My own hair is wavy at the back mostly because I work on the front. I loo like I've not brushed my hair if I don't straighten it.

Therefore I do not mean anyone with curly hair or wavy hair looks like they were dragged through a hedge!

Pregnancy turned my poker straight hair wavy, also figuring out what to do with it. I believe you're not meant to brush it but a lifetime of brushing makes me feel like I've not brushed my teeth even if it does spoil the definition of the waves.
I've stopped using heat on it and scrunch some curl cream through when damp but need to figure out the next steps!

Authorinwaiting · 30/07/2024 09:53

@courtyardofhope what is CGM
Pls?

Mine was straight until I was pregnant with dd at 34, it went really curly during pregnancy and relaxed to wavy but frizzy afterwards. Now I've stopped dyeing it, it's no longer got the frizz, just loose waves

EBearhug · 30/07/2024 09:53

Mine too. Poker straight, now much more likely to go wavy/ringletty when it dries naturally (which is every time.) I just brush it and carry on with life.

CoffeandTiaMaria · 30/07/2024 09:53

I’m 70 and mine’s definitely got wavy over the last few years. I’m rather happy with it!

courtyardofhope · 30/07/2024 09:57

The curly girl
Method
Lots of washing your hair over the sink and not in the shower, drenching it in conditioner and water and then lots of scrunching it up to enact curls. I tried it a couple of times but very high maintenance for me. I am lazy

AnyFucker · 30/07/2024 10:00

Mine did

MermaidEyes · 30/07/2024 10:14

Mine too. Straight as string as a child, now I have natural waves as it dries. I hate straight hair anyway, it does me no favours, so I'm not complaining!

IrisDenver · 30/07/2024 10:21

Yes! My hair was dead straight as a young woman but now it has a slight wave to it!

Same with my younger sister. My older sister always had a bit of a wave to it.

trainedopossum · 30/07/2024 10:42

Yes, mine is now wavy and my mother's is curly after a lifetime of poker straightness.
We've both stopped using shampoo. Used conditioner instead for a few years and now use Hairstory, New Wash, which I prefer. I use oil on the greys as they seem to grow sideways. I pin it up in a loose bun at night. Brushing makes it frizzy.

Happyinarcon · 30/07/2024 11:00

I just got a perm, it’s easier for me to style than try to manage the random and unpredictable waves that show up

tabulahrasa · 30/07/2024 11:09

Waves/curls can be affected by hormones, so yes it can get wavier as you get older, mine got wavier with each pregnancy.

Look up the curly girl method - there’s lots of info and it can seem quite a lot of work, but most people treat it as a bit of a pick and mix method, ie only do the bits that work for them.

brushing mine does indeed make me look like I’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards 😂

I only use shampoo, my hair is real fine and any moisturising products create build up instantly, so no conditioner, cream or oil.

i work gel in when it’s soaking wet, scrunch it a lot, then diffuse it till it’s dry and scrunch out the crunchy cast from the gel… it does take about an hour, an hour and a half to do - but if I clip it up and wear a buff or bonnet to sleep I only need to wash it every 4/5 days. So it’s very labour intensive on wash day, but I literally just shake it out in the morning till the next wash day.

which was very long and probably too detailed given that’s specific to my hair - but it was to try and illustrate that yes when you look up curly girl it’ll look like loads of things and hours of work every day… but actually when you figure out what works for your hair it can be fairly straightforward

Crikeyalmighty · 30/07/2024 11:38

Yes- my nice straight but fine hair suddenly at 60 (but also immediately post covid) went like straw and very wavy - especially in damp or rainy weather- multiple conditioners later it still refuses to be anything other than straw like

SnapdragonToadflax · 30/07/2024 11:50

Mine was poker straight as a child, went slightly wavy after I had my child at 36, and is much more wavy now at 42 and definitely peri-menopausal. It's interesting, I always wanted curly hair but it is much more difficult to manage than I expected! I never quite know how it will look each day.

LemonySnickets · 30/07/2024 14:17

Mine is starting to curl! I had ringlets as a toddler/small child. As my hair grew longer and I got older it straightened. I'm now 48 and the last 16 months or so I've noticed it start to curl again. I've had to stop brushing it as it goes frizzy if I do, and had to invest in a wide tooth comb! Kind of hoping it will properly curl!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 30/07/2024 14:19

I wish! I'm 52 and my hair is still resolutely poker-straight (and very fine and increasingly thin and breakable). I'd love to have wavy hair!

poppym12 · 30/07/2024 14:41

My hair has done the opposite. It used to be thick and wavy/curly but post menopause it's just thin and flat with the odd wave here and there.

I miss my hair.

lindyloo57 · 30/07/2024 18:29

Mine do, I've always had straight hair, but since the menopause it's wavy, I hate it, so now having to straighten it every day, except in this hot weather, I just put it up in a ponytail.

GemPePe · 13/01/2025 18:49

Has anyone found a way to stop the 'hedge backwards look'? Mine has suddenly gone curly, but not all over, so it's straight in parts and curly in parts. It used to be shiny, and now it's dry and looks awful.

CharlotteCChapel · 13/01/2025 18:52

. I e did, it always had a bit of a wave but it's now edging towards curly

ReignOfError · 13/01/2025 18:58

Mine's done the opposite. Curly all my life, but got straighter and straighter in my 60s as I turned grey. It has a very slight wave now
