Beef tallow on your face?

DoingJustFine · 29/07/2024 15:15

I read an inspiring article… OK, I saw a TikTok, by a dermatologist recommending you use beef tallow on your skin as a moisturiser.

Beef tallow is basically lard, but from cows’ fat instead of pigs’.

The dermatologist said it doesn’t clog your pores, moisturises really well and can help soften lines. He said it’s more effective than some ££££ creams.

So naturally, I bought some. I found it on The Soapery website for £6 and I’ve melted it down into little pots and I’m about to start slapping it on. It doesn’t smell beefy. But in every other way it’s about as unpleasant as you’d expect.

Have you ever heard of this? Will it work? Am I about to be gorgeous or will I look the same but with fat-smeared pillowcases?

You'll be really attractive afterwards....to dogs

You might as well start using pomade and powder for your hair instead of shampoo. But should you, really? There is a reason why personal grooming standards have moved on. I also would be quite concerned about origins of the beef - diet, welfare, etc. I guess you would not want to slap stress hormones and antibiotics onto your face.

I know olive oil can give you a lovely smooth skin... add a few drops of essential oil that you like to stop you smelling like a bruschetta.

Be wary in the sunshine! Your skin will be crisp like that of a roast chicken!

pizofaz · 29/07/2024 15:45

Oh hellllll no

Rummly · 29/07/2024 15:45

Is this some pervy euphemism?

sunshinechaser · 29/07/2024 15:52

I think we really need to start applying some common sense to the recommendations on TikTok and not follow every trend like a sheep! Putting this on your face sounds disgusting, messy and smelly. I don't care if it makes me look 20 (which of course it won't), I wouldn't go near my face with it!

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 29/07/2024 15:53

Nope - Suet is for christmas puddings, not faces.

Happyinarcon · 29/07/2024 15:55

I have used it as a body moisturiser. It worked fine, but so does a lot of stuff. I would definitely try it on my face if I still had some.

Waterboatlass · 29/07/2024 15:55

My 2 cats would come and lick it off in the night

Exactly my view.

@Idontjetwashthefucker
Its right there above you one line post.

APurpleSquirrel · 29/07/2024 16:26

Beef tallow is just a fat/oil at the end of the day. Not much different to any other, other than its origin & considering there are increasingly concerning practices & consequences for many plant oils (deforestation due to palm oil & coconut oil; olive oil shortages creating sky high prices; the war in Ukraine affecting sunflower oil production & prices etc; the processing needed to extract plant oils using solvents etc) then animal fats as a byproduct of the meat industry isn't that bad. Tallow makes very good soap, as does lard but many are put off because of what it is/where it comes from - they'd much rather buy products with palm oil in & not consider the implications of deforestation of the rainforest etc as it's a plant oil & it's 'natural' - whatever that means!
Vegetarians & Vegans aside; we should be utilising these products more.

Eh?

Cadela · 29/07/2024 16:47

I’m allergic to everything. Tallow is the only thing I can use that doesn’t cause a massive reaction.

I make my own with organic grass-fed beef fat and store in the freezer until I need it.

Might not work for everyone, but it’s the best thing I’ve ever discovered. Solved all my skin issues in a few days.

PickAChew · 29/07/2024 16:48

Good reason to be off to the chippy 😂

bryceQ · 29/07/2024 16:50

I use one from Fierce Nature after Tretinoin and it works well for me. it's not a miracle, it's just a really rich moisturiser, which is good for my dry skin. I absolutely don't adhere to the tallow as an SPF and I don't like all of the "natural" scaremongering "toxic" stuff. But tallow makes me glow

DoingJustFine · 29/07/2024 17:20

Pervy euphemism? Are you ok?

i LOLed at the comment about avoiding the sun or else crisping up like a roast chicken!

Good point about the sourcing of the tallow. I don’t know where mine came from but will check.

This is exactly what the dermatologist said it would do!

tallow makes me glow

Those were the exact words used by a few people who commented on the TikTok. They all said it left them “glowing”. Is that the crispy-chicken effect though?

@bryceQ and @Cadela — any tips on using it? Do I just slap it on like a normal moisturiser? Does it sink in eventually? How do you protect your pillowcase from looking like a used Greggs bag?

GettingStuffed · 29/07/2024 17:37

I've read enough dermatology pages to realise that it's just a moisturiser. It doesn't have any miracle properties and is far too greasy for anyone without dry skin.

Most "dermatologists " on tik tok are either being paid to big up a product or don't have enough time to give caveats about the product.

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 29/07/2024 17:39

Coconut oil will give you similar effects and be much more pleasant.

DoingJustFine · 29/07/2024 17:40

DH is going to make some chips with it too 😂 He can’t do that with Crème de la Mer

YouJustDoYou · 29/07/2024 17:42

Castor oil is better.

bryceQ · 29/07/2024 17:45

Mine smells really nice like orange scent. I let it sink in before I go to sleep. You only need a little bit.

DoingJustFine · 29/07/2024 17:50

@YouJustDoYou i have that too. I also heard about that on TikTok.
