I want to get married in this dress, but..

I've fallen in love with this dress, but it's on Etsy, no returns, coming from Thailand, and one size fits none all, so I'm not going to buy it! Where on earth could I find similar, please? Getting married next June. 5ft6, size 14, will be 48 by then. I'm not a fan of stiff fabrics, and am a massive hippy at heart. Can anyone suggest any inspiration, please?

Honestly, that's not a difficult dress to make if you know your way around a sewing machine even a little bit. Mood's website has three different free patterns to work from that could fit the bill for you:

https://www.moodfabrics.com/blog/the-lanai-handkerchief-dress-free-sewing-pattern/

https://www.moodfabrics.com/blog/the-edith-dress-free-adaptive-sewing-pattern/

https://www.moodfabrics.com/blog/ulmus-dress-free-sewing-pattern/

And the instructions talk you through the process. You could pick out the fabric yourself to make it more 'wedding,' it looks like the original is linen or 100% cotton which is nice but wrinkles if you so much as look at it. You could get a nice dupion silk or viscose.

I'd be happy to talk you through the process if you did decide to make it, it's pretty beginner friendly. Look up Butterick or New Look dress patterns too, they come with more complete instructions and most fabric shops have a catalogue for you to browse.

That botanical dress is just lovely.

MrsTartanTeacosy · 27/07/2024 19:44

That botanical print is devine. Wish it was in my price range!

I recommend One Hundred Stars, like a pp.

TeaGinandFags · 27/07/2024 19:47

If you're going to consider alterations, how about going the whole hog and doing a sewing bee and getting a dress made from scratch from sari fabric?

Totally drop dead gorgeous.

seven201 · 27/07/2024 20:14

What about a second hand needle and thread dress? They have some gorgeous dresses

YourSpleenIsDamp · 27/07/2024 15:24

Oooh - that is gorgeous! I need to be able to wear a decent bra, though.

I've just fallen down a Free People hole - thanks so much for suggesting them!

That really is lovely!

MimosaCardamom · 27/07/2024 20:19

I won't buy anything from Etsy as it's just all mass-produced crap from china now.

Are you anywhere near Brighton? There's Black Pearl in Kensington Gardens

I'm tempted to go with the suggestions of just buying it and having it altered as needed. It's around £100, so not completely eye watering, but much more than I'd usually spend on clothes - charity shop and Vinted for me usually! Having another look, and I could always make it into a skirt (not to get married in though!) if there's no way of making it look nice.

I think it's a really beautiful dress, and perfect for your wedding. If it was me, I would take a chance and get it altered if it doesn't fit.

Use the Google app to do a reverse image search? You get all kinds of similar and slightly different dresses.

I was going to suggest looking at East too

East is lovely, very good quality, I have had a dress and a top from them and they are both lovely and I get lots of compliments when I wear either

I have two of their short kimono tops, both are gorgeous, beautifully made and wash well

YourSpleenIsDamp · 27/07/2024 21:44

Thank so much everyone! Some fab suggestions - I've bought the one I fell in love with now I've seen I could return it - when I put it on I'll know whether it's worth having it altered. And if not, then I'll trawl through some of the links again Flowers

Thanks for the Mood Fabrics link. Sewing Heaven😍

SerafinasGoose · 28/07/2024 10:23

Free People is the one I was coming here to recommend, but been beaten to it (unsurprisingly, because they absolutey fit the bill for you).

I have a wardrobe full of their stuff. Lovely quality and fabrics, no import charges (they're a Pennsylvania company so that's important), and an easy returns process. I've used their site for years with no problems and have snapped up some truly lovely stuff. Softest jeans I've ever owned, lovely floaty maxis and some gorgeous tunics. These days I buy for feel as much as look, and a key thing that keeps me coming back (I've bought from there for well over 10 years) is the fabrics.

If you are anywhere near Brighton their vintage shops are full of unique finds along these lines. I've picked up some beauties earlier this summer. Snooper's Attic is a must!

Congratulations on your forthcoming marriage.

That botanical print beaded dress is absolutely stunning

LlynTegid · 28/07/2024 11:24

I wish I could add to the suggestions, sorry I cannot. Admire you for what you want to wear and not be traditional.

LBFseBrom · 28/07/2024 12:04

I just want to add, have a good look around some decent shops/department stores, or even Indian shops. They all sell dresses like the ones you favour but quality of fabric and stitching is important.

Powerbelowseat · 28/07/2024 16:46

Look at Farm Rio

TheRainItRaineth · 28/07/2024 17:29

I don't know where you are, OP, but if you like Free People there are several Free People shops in London if you wanted to try any of their stuff on and get a feel for sizing.
