Teen DD and BO

Apparentlystillchilled · 24/07/2024 05:58

DD15 has terrible BO and it seems that normal soap and deod aren’t doing the trick. Yesterday was a bad day but I assumed she just hadn’t washed properly. I showed her (yet again) how to wash her pits and it took 3 goes with loads of soap for her to be clean and fresh.

No medical issues and she doesn’t drink booze or caffeine (which NHS website says can contribute to BO).

Can anyone recommend shower gel and deod that will help please?

I had an issue after using testosterone gel and after asking on MN I got a charcoal soap for smelly pits

www.cultbeauty.co.uk/megababe-space-bar-detoxifying-charcoal-underarm-bar-99g/13798836.html

It expensive and small but lasts ages and really works.

I also use the Mitchum Ultimate stick again costs a bit more but lasts forever and really works.

Ah your poor DD, it's miserable- and mortifying! I had a bit of an issue when hormones went crazy last year.

Previously I'd use shower gel with a shower pouffe scrubber thing (what are they called? The bunched up net things?!) and a good spray of dove antiperspirant but it didn't cut it.

The things I found helped were:
Switching to proper bar soap and lather/rinse/repeat
Keeping underarms hair free (I'm all for personal choice, I just found it helped)
I used Driclor a few times a week to reduce sweat- timed very carefully with above shaving
Mitchum roll on. Not spray! Just the roll on- or at a push the solid stick one, if I could get hold of it. Let it dry completely before dressing.
Cean top every day.

Hope that helps!

Is she using adult deodorant? Once you get to mid teens just washing properly isn't enough - I remember this myself, it suddenly comes from nowhere that you need daily wash and deodorant every morning

PartyHelpPlease1 · 24/07/2024 06:14

If you use a flannel on your arm pits it really helps. Just hands or a shower puff thing isn't enough. It's a flannel that cleans properly (with soap/shower gel on it) - good rub then rinse carefully. Dry then deodorant .

Vergeofbreakdown23 · 24/07/2024 06:15

I ONLY use Sure cotton fresh now - for some reason it's the only one that works for me and believe me I think I've tried every different deodorant over the years!
Try and stick with a soap bar too rather than shower gels - pears is a lovely one and
my nan always swore by coal tar soap too 👍
Old fashioned maybe, but they work x

StarsBeneathMyFeet · 24/07/2024 06:17

I use Perspirex, you apply it at night and wash off in the morning. Tried loads of different approaches over the years but that’s the only thing that works. It says you don’t need anything else but I use Sure Maximum protection too.
Charcoal soap sounds like a good idea. Definitely avoid anything like Dove, it’s not that cleansing.

Apparentlystillchilled · 24/07/2024 07:31

Thank you all so much! 🙏🙏🙏

Something else occurred to me- how do you get the smell of BO out of clothes? Sometimes the smell seems to just be embedded in her tops, despite detergent and white cider vinegar in the washing machine. So I end up soaking them in vinegar and/or putting them in the freezer and/or rewashing them.

Does she drink enough water. I blamed hormones last year until my son pointed out I drink very little water. It made a huge difference.

GaraMedouar · 24/07/2024 07:39

My partner says that aluminium free deodorant is the best he’s used , and not the anti perspirant but the deodorant only. He finds he doesn’t smell sweaty now.
I have used Driclor/Mitchum in the past when I must’ve been more hormonal and they worked well.

Wallywobbles · 24/07/2024 07:41

I was advised that ammonia applied just before washing works on getting BO out. I have never tried it.

Personally I admit defeat and get rid of them. As soon as you iron the pits area the stench is back.

For DD I've sometimes washed them 3x back to back to get the smell out. Sometimes I feel like a bloodhound snorting T-shirt pits.

WhenWillWanksWildly · 24/07/2024 08:08

I bought some Dr Beckmann odour remover for my teen DD clothes. It works okay but would love to know if there was anything better.

isthewashingdryyet · 24/07/2024 08:11

Bar soap and flannel and a good scrub. Then anti perspiriant
every day

Apparentlystillchilled · 24/07/2024 08:12

@Wallywobbles totally relate to the bloodhound feeling! And thank you all for all these tips too.
No, she probably doesn’t drink enough water @Marblessolveeverything - will try that too.
Will also check out aluminium deod, @GaraMedouar

The lovely teenage years! I used to put a bit of antibac washiing up liquid on school shirt arm pits/sports shirts before putting in the wash. Would need an extra rinse though. If a whites wash, a few tablespoons of washing soda crystals added to the washing powder can help. I found washing powder rather than liquid is more effective for sweaty stuff.

Another vote for Mitchum, roll on or stick but stick better for no white marks. Don't bother with sprays they're a waste of time.

Hot washes have worked for me for smells embedded in clothes.

Blarn · 24/07/2024 09:00

The Megababe soap is really good and the bar lasts months.

I have never been very sweaty but I a stinky! A pill I was on once made it very bad. Soap and a flannel and wash twice is advice Ihave followed since reading it on here. Once removes all the previous days deodorant, the second time cleanses the skin.

Cotton holds smells less than mn made fabrics and can be washed at a higher temp. She might just need to avoid any tshirts which have very short sleeves that are close to the armpit though, they get very smelly.

Blingismything · 24/07/2024 09:07

Also a clean flannel each time as the aroma can linger.

Inmyownlittlecorner · 24/07/2024 09:46

I was watching a dermatologist on Instagram & she recommended Hibiscrub for body odour.

OverAnxious727 · 24/07/2024 09:53

I remember as a teen I had certain t shirts that seemed to retain BO smell and it would be activated when I wore them and perspired. Can't think how they were different but definitely had some from a budget type shop called Peacocks that had this problem. T shirts from topshop and miss selfridge tended to be fine.
I also used to swear by the mitchum invisible stick anti perspirant.
By my early twenties I definitely didn't sweat as much and haven't had any issues with BO since, I tend to wear natural deodorants and often forget and it's not an issue so hopefully your DD will be similar.

I'm glad you asked OP. My daughter is having some issues at the minute. I never understood properly what this was but my eyes were watering the other day and I had to politely tell her she needed a shower. Thankfully she didn't take offence and said she knew and was on her way to get one. I'm noting down these things I've never heard of the Mitchum and Hibiscrub. I had to steam the sofa where she had been sitting as it left a smell.

Lemonade2011 · 24/07/2024 10:14

My son is like this, he honks to high heaven and I don’t know what he does in the shower but I’ll be buying him some charcoal soap, interesting re hydration will mention that too. He has some deodorant you put on at night and wash off in am not sure he uses it properly though so will check that. It’s quite eye watering at times and he doesn’t seem to smell himself or care. Fun my other 2 older sons never smelled so foul so feel bad for him. (14)

ToBeOrNotToBee · 24/07/2024 10:19

The smell is caused by a bacteria living on skin and clothing and feeds off the sweat.
You need a good routine of washing with a bar of soap and a flannel, gel soap just doesn't cut it in my experience.
And you need to break the cycle of re-colonising the skin every day with the bacteria after a wash. So new bra, shirt etc every day for a few days and boil wash or use a sports wash (halo is good) to clean the clothes.
Ironing also destroys bacteria in clothing to help break the cycle.

nomchonge1 · 24/07/2024 11:45

MITCHUM ROLL ON CREAM! :-)

honkifyalikebeans · 24/07/2024 12:06

The natural deodorant company is incredible. I stunk the whole time I breastfed (like literally 30 mins after getting out of the shower) and this stopped it entirely.
