Skirt is LK Bennett and it has hung in my wardrobe for some inexplicable reason. It is wool and silk, full skirt with pockets, fairly vibrant fuchsia.

Have a 'do' in a fairly upmarket pub this weekend. What should I wear with skirt Something not too fussy and simple I think. I brought the silk top from Jigsaw ( bargain with extra 15%off)

It is good silk but is the black a bit harsh with the skirt? I don't really suit black either... any ideas/ opinions welcome...
Otherwise I have a forest green long tulle net skirt ( not worn either! )
Excuse poor photos!

Oh I like that! But agree the top is not quite right. I would try it with a simple bardot top, not mega low just shoulder skimming.

DancingNotDrowning · 09/07/2024 07:36

of all the criticisms of a shirt and voluminous skirt combo it never occurred to me that people might think I look like a waitress Grin

Queen Rania wears the look particularly well, but I also think jlo looks great in this picture

Your thread title is hilarious. Why does it matter where the dinner is? Or does one want to boast that one doesn't just dine anywhere, darling?!

Your chippiness is hilarious.

People who want to take offence will find offence in anything.

thats a gorgeous skirt. I like a bright skirt. Personally I would wear a very plain top, a fitted black one, picking out the black in the skirt and let the skirt shine.

perhapsatea · 09/07/2024 07:44

It only needs a nice white tshirt. Chelsea or not, it's still a pub! Lovely skirt btw.

RomanRoysSearchHistory · 09/07/2024 07:54

I'd say it would depend on your height and proportions- a white shirt could be awesome, or disastrous..
I'd go either fitted ballet-style crossover body, or a boxy, cropped (to skirt waistline) top in a neutral or black.

Westfacing · 09/07/2024 07:55

It may only be a pub but some of the pubs in Chelsea have very smart dining rooms - so it's reasonable to want to dress up a bit.

TooMuchRedMaybe · 09/07/2024 08:07

I think a white shirt tied at the waist would look lovely.

TonightMatthewIamgoingtobecher · 09/07/2024 08:10

Agree vibrant colours will look lovely with skirt. Emerald green, aqua, turquoise, light pink, matching pink, red or orange. Anything but black or white. Navy if you want safe

AstonMartha · 09/07/2024 08:18

I would go for a navy camisole.

YellowAsteroid · 09/07/2024 08:30

I wouldn’t tuck a top in. I’d try for a top fitted to my waist and sitting just above my hips to emphasise your neat waist.

I’d look for something boat necked to subtly suggest a sort of 50s look.

And probably white or navy blue.

Gorgeous skirt. Thing about wearing such a strong colour is you need to make sure it doesn’t wear you!

But it’s a pub - I wouldn’t worry too much.

allmycats · 09/07/2024 08:32

Short and fitted fine knit cardigan or short fitted slash neck jumper. Top length only just to waistband

ZenNudist · 09/07/2024 08:37

I think boxy cropped or shorter top. In a very vibrant colour. Yellow maybe.

Or if you have the figure a vest or camisole tucked in.

What shoes do you have? Maybe sort of coordinate the shoes and top.

What a strange reply

Wow S and B has got nasty these days. OP is establishing context.

@LibertyDuck knows this. They are just obviously someone who derives pleasure from being nasty.

Terribly unattractive quality in a person.

Everyone just reads that sort of comment and rolls their eyes. Apart that is from other similar damaged types who relish the opportunity to jump in and add more bizzare bile

Or this sort of shape. The black blouse is awful. Wrong colour, wrong shape.

Love this sailor top.

Possiblynotever · 09/07/2024 09:25

You look fair haired, so you could get away with white or cream. You need to try orange or red, it really depends on the colours of the flowers, maybe you can find something that picks them up.... also, a lighter pink with the same hue would do...check Zara, some of their things are wonderful

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 09/07/2024 09:28

Keep it simple with either a plain white or grey marl t-shirt, or a white shirt

Twattergy · 09/07/2024 09:34

Not orange!
White silky top - could be a blouse, camisole or sleeveless with a slightly draped neckline. Or even a crisp t shirt as other have suggested.

Obviously it matters.
Id be making a lot more effort with somewhere like Chelsea than I would in a local pub in Leicestershire, Surely.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 09/07/2024 09:50

That would be beautiful with an emerald green or other strong coloured sari blouse, if you have the waist for it.

I agree and found the comment catty. I’d also dress up for something posher than the local. I don’t understand why the poster had a go.

@CordeliaGrey I'm of no use to you style-wise as I'm an untidy wreck but just wanted to say your skirt is gorgeous! Hope you have a good night wearing it. I bet you'll look lovely.
