Will 100mls of shampoo last me for 2vweeks?

We're going away for 2 weeks with carry on luggage only. Normally I'd pack toiletries in hold luggage.

I appreciate that Boots in airports sell shampoo and conditioner but at grossly inflated prices. Plus we can't bring it back. I'm just trying to work out if I can get away with 100 mls of shampoo for 2 weeks. I'll have 200mls of conditioner as DH doesn't use it so can take 100mls for me.

I usually wash my (shoulder length, fine) hair every other day. Will 100mls last me or do I just sick it up and pay airport prices? I'm going to have to buy the suncream airline as I burn really easily.

I have a bob and thin hair, 100ml doesn't last me a week. Buy some when you get to Normandy, Carrefour sells the same brands as the UK.

Newusernames · 02/07/2024 18:26

Get a shampoo bar! They last for ages.

elQuintoConyo · 02/07/2024 18:27

Sorry, I misread 'Normally' as Normandy 😂 what a noob!

I'm travelling France - UK next month, going to the pound shop when I get there for shampoo, conditioner and deodorant!

fungipie · 02/07/2024 18:33

Where are you going? Most countries have shops ;) honest.

Raera · 02/07/2024 18:37

In carry on luggage haven't most airports gone back to 100mls? With regards your 200mls conditioner I mean.
I'd just get some in Boots airside, stick in your pockets and save valuable room in carry on bags.

IgoogledYOLO · 02/07/2024 18:41

Do click and collect for the boots airport. Means you get the online prices.

5128gap · 02/07/2024 18:41

I doubt it. Why not decant some into your 100ml bottle and see how much your next hair wash uses to give you a guide?

maw1681 · 02/07/2024 18:42

I don't think so, not if you're washing every other day.
Why can't you take 2x100ml?

Jewelanemone · 02/07/2024 18:43

Shampoo bars. Light, easy to pack and take up no room.

Exactly what i was going to ask. Surely just take two 100ml bottles. There is no rule saying you can only take one 100ml bottle of shampoo, it just all needs to fit in the 20cm x 20cm bag.

ButtSurgery · 02/07/2024 18:44

Just buy it abroad.

Boots at airports isn't noticeably more expensive, but you can also order it for collection airside.

Sakura7 · 02/07/2024 18:45

It would last me and I have fairly long hair.

People must be using huge amounts.

Agree with the shampoo bar suggestions.

This! Buy it when you get there.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 02/07/2024 18:47

Or as others have suggested, shampoo bars if they work for your hair type. I personally wouldn't wait to buy abroad unless I knew I could get one of the brands /types of shampoo I know works for my hair.

ashiningbeaconinspace · 02/07/2024 18:49

Shampoo bars every time. I also travel with an elastic travel washing line and some detergent leaves. Easy to pack and to use and allowed me to do a month in Canada with carry on only...

Just go to the supermarket when you get there. We were in Spain a few weeks ago and I bought shampoo & other toiletries in Eroski. Total cost was about €5, which is trivial in the context of the cost of holiday. And it was a great excuse for a wander round a big foreign supermarket, which is one of my favourite things to do because I’m a saddo. 😉

That's not sad, I love visiting supermarkets in foreign countries too. Also agree that, if you're only taking hand luggage, it's easier to buy stuff when you get to the destination.

Bjorkdidit · 02/07/2024 19:06

Yes, I think it would. I take 100 ml for a week and I don't think I use half of it. I'd probably just wash my hair every other day if I thought it wasn't going to last.

@StripedPiggy we've just come back from Ibiza and one of the reasons I picked the apartment I did was that in one direction there was an Eroski and the other a Mercadona, both a 5 minute walk away.

Plus we found a proper Spanish Ferreteria which is DPs favourite thing in the whole world (ironmongers/hardware store, I like the name because even though I know it's related to the word iron, it makes me think about ferreting around to find things which you'd understand if you've ever been in one).

But relevant to the thread is that Mercadona sell travel sized hair spray and mousse much cheaper than Boots so I always get that from there.

TakeOnFlea · 02/07/2024 19:06

Boots at the airport isn't grossly inflated prices at all. Just buy it there.

Or pack 3 100ml bottles of shampoo rather than 2??

PosingPosture20 · 02/07/2024 19:13

After my last experience in flying I would just pack a normal bottle of shampoo in my carry on and cross my fingers.

On the way to Spain last month I had two (open) 500ml bottles of water in my hand luggage (genuine error) which I discovered on landing - they sailed through security. On the way back I had a nearly full 300ml bottle of sun lotion that I'd bought there which I was loathe to waste - so I shoved it in the bottom of my carry on. Again, sailed through security.

StripedPiggy · 02/07/2024 19:17

@Bjorkdidit That sounds familiar! Santa Eularia?

Bjorkdidit · 02/07/2024 19:19

Yes!

The whole can't bring it back thing is a little stingy to be honest. With the price of getting away considered, it likely isnt worth worrying about too much.

There's only really 3 things to do in this situation, being sensible. Firstly, buy from a shop once there (unless its somewhere really random). Secondly, slightly larger hand luggage (max allowance options exist if you're really unsure) and thirdly just order it off Amazon or something when you're there (providing you're in a fairly built up area that it caters to)

Bjorkdidit · 02/07/2024 20:31

Nothing to do with being stingy. Some of us have a pathological aversion to wasting things.

So when things have to be left behind or even binned if open food packets etc, we have to not think about the potential waste if the thing we left behind that was perfectly usable like shampoo gets binned because its picked up by someone who wouldn't use it because someone else has opened it.
