Grey hairs!!!!

Mama1026 · 01/07/2024 17:22

Has anyone got recommendations on covering grey hairs? I have very coarse hairs that will only cover for a few days after I've died them! I've tried all sorts! Even with no ammonia.

Following as this drives me nuts too, I have started getting hair coloured by hairdresser and it does seem to last longer with the odd root touch up in between but no where near as often as when I was just having lowlights. But if there's a way other than paying a small fortune every few weeks I'm happy to try

I've been dying my hair weekly as it's shows so much at the front I WANT IT GONE 😂😂 maybe it's a case of getting what they use and doing it ourselves! 😆

I buy inoa from amazon or other sites and it doesn't fade, only need to touch up at the roots when it grows out

sommerjade · 01/07/2024 17:42

I have white (!!!!) hairs, I find that regular highlights cover it best as the white is blended in with the blonde then and barely visible. My once very brunette sister has gone for blonde highlights too for that exact reason.

stronglatte · 01/07/2024 17:44

Joining please ! I need to know !!

Does this need mixing with anything? If so what's the process you do?

@Mama1026 I was doing it weekly to 10 days with nice n easy root touch up, mines all round the front too but I've maybe had ti touch up 3 times since hairdresser colored my hair, still annoying but definitely better nit having to do it all the time. If I could use what she uses that woukd be great as obviously what I'm using is rubbish. I didn't consider blonde highlights but my hair is still naturally dark (except fir the greys at temple) ans when i had them once a few years ago my hair went like straw. Although I really di thinknits a perfect solution

Yes I'm guessing they can't give away all their little secrets! I've got dark hair! I'm mixed race and I don't think blonde would suit 😂 I might have to pop in a few hair dressers and see if they can advice me on anything as I'm sick of doing it weekly! We have a beauty warehouse I might have a look and see if I can buy and mix it myself

@Mama1026 you did well to get past all my spelling mistakes (must read things back before pressing post 😀) I think it would be a huge shock to me let alone everyone else if I went blonde. My hair is naturally very dark but I'm very fair skinned (irish heritage) and when I was younger and not greying I'd be asked if I felt OK as I look so pale! Be interested to hear what suggestions you get from any hairdressers you visit. I know some are color specialists now rather than just cutting I'm wondering if that may be the way to go as although I do like how my hair how it's coloured it does look a bit one dimensional (if that's the right term)

ChishiyaBat · 01/07/2024 18:43

Ex stylist here. Resistant greys are tricky, there is no pigment left which is why they go wiry and are rougher than your hair used to be. There are some tricks we use:
Pre softening- You could try using hydrogen peroxide developer to pre-soften the cuticle before colouring. Just apply 20volume peroxide on the resistant hair you are having trouble with, comb it through, leave for 20 mins and then apply your colour as normal.
Pre pigmenting- You could pre pigment with your colour, use the colour only no developer, mix it 1part colour to 1part warm water, apply to the resistant greys, comb it through if you need to, leave for 20mins then apply your colour as normal. There are probably tutorials on how to do this out there, but it's easy enough.

You are welcome, Let me know if it works for you.
Also you can leave colour on for 45mins, most instructions say 35mins, but that extra 10mins can help deposit more pigment.

tobee · 01/07/2024 18:56

Two things:

Someone said on another thread that you should choose hair dye shades with whole numbers so 5 or 4 rather than 5.1 or 4.1 or whatever as they work more effectively. Also there a big difference between semi permanent, which is less good at covering greys and permanent. Don't forget to do a patch test.

Secondly, a hairdresser at Toni and Guy used a brunette dry shampoo as an instant grey cover for a temporary quick fix. You just spray it on. It looked pretty good and didn't itch or anything. It's called Label M Fashion Edition Dry Shampoo. I presume they do offer hair colours.

ChishiyaBat · 01/07/2024 19:05

@tobee That is a good tip too, but not all colours use numbers, some use letters too, so what you need to look for in that instance is an N or NN the numbers only refer to depth in this case so 1 would be darkest black and 10 lightest blonde, so for example a dark brown would be 4N or 4NN.

Tara336 · 01/07/2024 19:13

@Mama1026 yes definitely come back with an update. I'm assuming this nice n easy root touch up must be semi permanent as I can't believe my hair can grow that much in a week. I think I'm going to investigate some of the tips on here too

Yes I'm going to have to figure out what all of your previous post means but I will defo try it! I leave the box dye on now for an hour and still doesn't work! I've tried so many brands!

Thank you!!! I've tried the L'Oréal one (not dry shampoo) but it gets everywhere!! I'd love to find out what works for my hair!! Thanks for the advice!

What box colour do you use @Mama1026 ? I will find a pro match on amazon and a developer, it's honestly so much better and will last longer. I will also find you some tutorials on pre softening and pre pigmenting because my explanation probably isn't the best😂.

🥹🥹 that's sooooo nice of you!! Today I used garnia the one in a pot) 5. Chestnut brown... my hair is black but I think maybe using browns would have helped 😂

Ok so there aren't as many tutorials on pre softening as I thought there would be, the 1st part of this video is it though, 20volume developer over the grey for 20mins then apply your colour on top...

You're so helpful!!! Thank you so much for helping as much as you have!!! My natural hair is definitely 1. I have a red tinge in my hair if I was to bleach it, it would be ginger!

Thanks for the extra info @ChishiyaBat

Yes with that spray I was expecting it to look sooty and be itchy but it wasn't bad and also made my thin hair look a bit thicker which always shows up terribly when my roots need doing.

Coincidentally I was just reading up about colours and found an ancient thread on here that said paraphenylenediamine (PPD). is possibly an ingredient to be wary of as can cause allergic reaction.

CollyBobble · 01/07/2024 19:54

I buy a spray for touch ups.
