Grey hairs!!!!

Mama1026 · 01/07/2024 17:22

Has anyone got recommendations on covering grey hairs? I have very coarse hairs that will only cover for a few days after I've died them! I've tried all sorts! Even with no ammonia.

I have the same problem with my greys, if it does take then permanent colour just washes out at the first shampoo. I have tried different box dyes, semi permanent, different shades all the same. Last week I tried E Salon as they had an offer to try for £10, at the moment it has lasted 3 washes and is still covering, so I have high hopes, it is £22 or £27 if you don't subscribe but if it works it will still be cheaper than using extra root touch up etc.

You're so helpful!!! Thank you so much for helping as much as you have!!! My natural hair is definitely 1. I have a red tinge in my hair if I was to bleach it, it would be ginger!

Ok so a level 1, I can't be exact without seeing it in person in natural light you understand, but I would go for a 3 or 4N or 3 or 4NN with a 20volume developer, a 5 would be way too light and would not look blend in with the rest of your hair. Something like this, how close is that to your natural colour?

Thanks for the extra info @ChishiyaBat

Yes with that spray I was expecting it to look sooty and be itchy but it wasn't bad and also made my thin hair look a bit thicker which always shows up terribly when my roots need doing.

Coincidentally I was just reading up about colours and found an ancient thread on here that said paraphenylenediamine (PPD). is possibly an ingredient to be wary of as can cause allergic reaction.

Edited

Good point, This is why a patch test is so important, people roll their eyes at it, but they wouldn't be rolling their eyes if they ended up with anaphylaxis or bad skin reaction.

tobee · 01/07/2024 20:12

Yes I was very strict about patch tests and did them every time I applied dye during lockdown. I really didn't want to go to a&e with a reaction.

Mama1026 · 01/07/2024 20:16

I would say that's pretty close! Because I do it all different shades it all over the place at the moment!! You're going beyond helpful thank you so much!!

No problem, I do it all the time in real life, not that anyone listens, then wonder why it didn't go the way they wanted(my mam is the worst for it, then I have to go fix it)😂.
Ok, So I go for that with a 20volume developer, that way you can try both pre softenening and pre pigmenting, depending on hair length you may need two tubes, you should really use the matching developer for best results but any 20volume developer will work if you can't afford it.

Don't forget to patch test before you do it, just a drop behind your ear of the colour, any reaction wash it straight off and don't use it on your head! You can get it from ebay or if you have a sallys beauty near you they may have it there. I can't find the 3NN on amazon which is annoying.

😂😂😂 that made me laugh. That's brilliant thank you so much! Usually I would just do my roots and not my whole head. So I don't mix the colour with anything just put it straight on top after 20mins?

Grey-Blending, instead of covering the greys the rest of your hair is coloured to eventually match with the greys. Not 100% sure how it works but seen a few hairdressers on tic Tok; it can take 6 months to do fully

oulala · 01/07/2024 20:50

John Freda Defy Grey is amazing for dark hair with a few grey hairs. I have a white streak at the front and it blends it in, as well as conditioning it.

ChishiyaBat · 01/07/2024 20:56

Oh my nan was even worse love her, she would velcro roller her hair every day, but if a strand didn't fit she would just lop it off with a scissors, so trying to cut and perm her hair was an absolute nightmare😂.
No you need to mix the colour with the developer, in a 1-1 ratio, so if you are only doing your roots I would start with 20ml of developer with 20ml of colour which is a third of a tube. Mix it all together with a plastic spoon. A medicine sooon is good for measuring and mixing small amounts of colour.
Even if you are pre softening or prepigmenting first, you still need to mix it to apply the actual colour.

StormingNorman · 01/07/2024 20:58

Ask a hairdresser for grey blending. It uses blond highlights or balayage to camouflage the greys.

Your mum and your gran is where you've learned your patience then!! 😂😂😂 okay great stuff I will order the colour with the 20%vol developer and give it a go!! We have a beauty store here so I will pop there when I get time! I'm excited to try this fingers crossed!!

Good luck @Mama1026 I hope it goes well.

Somethingsnappy · 02/07/2024 14:28

Well, I use natural henna, and it's fantastic for covering greys. It's permanent. In fact, the grey hairs make the colour more vibrant, so I have a sprinkling of highlights, that I love. Lush do henna bricks, but there are limited choices of colour, so obviously that's a drawback.

So should I put the developer on the roots then mix the colour and developer and put it on after 20mins?

Yes, that is right. Put the 20vol on your grey, leave it for 20mins. Mix your colour as per instructions and whack it on for 35-45mins. I really hope it works for you🤞🏻

So, it's not worked however the video you sent says to use NN colour so I've brought that for when the tube finishes. Positive note - it's a lot cheap than buying box dye every week. I will see if they greys take to 4NN 🙂

Oh no, i'm sorry, yes nn is for grey coverage, although be prepared if you have truly resistant grey, nothing will really work. It is cheaper than box dye though and much better.
