Converse trainers - uncomfortable

How does anyone wear the bloody things? There's no cushioning in the soles whatsoever.
My husband bought me a pair in a sale...I wore them yesterday for a day out and was limping by the time we got home.
I'm going back to my Fitflops.

Too narrow and flat for me.

Same. Wearing them in isn't an issue - they're not made of hard material. It's the shape that's wrong for me.

cookiebee · 01/07/2024 12:05

i love the way they look sooo much, I bought a red pair many years ago, imagining myself in many situations looking casual yet put together, arty, student like, a bit edgy but so cool and laid back. As I walked along in them though, catching site of them on my feet, my thoughts changed, the song I might be singing in my head turned into the circus march, children, to my mind anyway, were wondering what was wrong with that sad clown walking down the high street, yep roll up, roll up, see the person with the funny clown feet but absolutely no clown credentials to back them up with, I quickly switched back to more muted colour trainers!

Rocket Dog jazzin are a comfy , wider alternative in a similar style. They have cushioned soles and the ho tops have zips. They are often cheaper too.

These ones are probably my favourite too, I have several of the tennis shoe style and they are super comfy to wear.
Its other shoe types I struggle with, put me in a ballet pump or pair of sandals and I'll have blisters before Ive taken 2 steps!

SparrowFeet · 01/07/2024 13:15

I love a barefoot feel but I think converse have something unique in that you can feel the floor but also they're so stiff you can't actually get your toes/ feet to move in the right way. They encourage your feet to uncomfortably slap against the rock hard pavement. Awful things.

Iheartmysmart · 01/07/2024 13:17

My Converse wide fit high tops are probably the comfiest shoes I own. Was very skeptical as my awkward feet hate most shoes but they didn’t need breaking in at all. Love them so much I’ve just designed a custom pair which should arrive in about 4 weeks.

Skybluepinky · 01/07/2024 13:43

They won’t ever be comfy, hold feet in a position that will cause plantar fasciitis, and no one walks nicely in them, just throw them away

Blarn · 01/07/2024 13:52

I love them but it must depend on your feet. I have narrow feet and love completly flat shoes. Can put on a brand new pair and walk miles in them straightaway. Dh doesn't think he would even manage to get a pair on his feet!

Dontliketheheat · 01/07/2024 13:54

Previous pairs were very comfy but those I bought a couple of years ago are not . I would only wear them on a day out if not much walking was involved but I just wanted my feet covered and not hot .

JackieGoodman · 01/07/2024 14:17

If its the super flat sole that's the problem, get some sports insoles, make them much easier to wear.

Menora · 01/07/2024 21:40

They are still marmite for me, I keep buying them even though they drive me crazy. I have the lift versions which are by far the most comfy but the foam inner sole makes your feet hotter than the face of the sun after a few hours. I have high tops which are so stiff and also normal ones and I always end up wearing the normal flat boring non high top ones that I got in vegan leather years ago
I tried Vans but they are also very flat

if I am walking I will wear Nike runners

I don't like them as they are too narrow for my big toes 😅

But thin soled shoes are good for your feet.

Wearing big cushioned trainers all the time weakens the muscles and can cause all sorts of issues with your feet.

(hence the trend for 'barefoot' shoes amongst a lot of people into fitness etc.)

Other way around. Humans evolved to walk on surface that would be soft such as sand and grassland. Without that soft surface the shoes need to provide the cushioning.

Running trainers are the best for cushioning with support or walking boots/shoes.

Our dept is spending £100s a week on insoles for foot problems exacerbated by soft shoes with no support like Skechers and converse, addidas gazelles or fashion trainers. I’m using on average £80 a day in insoles, double that for each person who needs a firmer insole with more control straightaway & over £100 per custom insole ordered. Plus my time which is not cheap.

The total bill is around £1500 a week for the two combined. My colleague thinks we could halve our caseload people wore supportive footwear.

Magpie50 · 02/07/2024 02:49

Just goes to show, everybody is different!
I threw out all my insoles, they did nothing for my PF and I get way less joint pain now I'm walking on a flat surface....and PF is gone too!

I love the fact these brands have become classics, at least it means a nice comfy option or 2.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 02/07/2024 03:55

I love the look of them but always found them
Uncomfortable - I bought some wide fit platform ones and it's a game changer! They are so comfy.

bananaphon · 02/07/2024 03:59

I've always found them comfortable. I find really flat shoes comfortable. Hate the feel and look of shoes with a slight arch.

Fraaahnces · 02/07/2024 04:02

The old-school flat ones are a recipe for plantar fasciitis. If you have room, you can jam some supportive gel inner soles in them. meanwhile, the Run Star Hike and Run Star Legacy ranges are some of the most comfy sneakers I have ever had (and I have wonky feet). They have amazingly supportive footbeds.

LizzeyBenett · 02/07/2024 04:39

So uncomfortable until you wear them in and by that time you'll have a hole in you heel. I love vans I lived in them when pregnant

mt9m · 02/07/2024 05:30

Flat shoes are only good when your feet behave like human feet, with natural toe position in a wide toe box. When your feet move properly your own muscles support you, you don't need commercial support. Converse do the opposite, flat but narrow without flexibility. Try some barefoot does, wear them gradually as you build strength. They're very comfortable and have a cascading positive impact on ankles, calves, knees, hips etc.

smooththecat · 02/07/2024 07:22

Saw a video of them being taken apart. The thick rubber bit is just a trim around the outside. The sole is as thin as a piece of cardboard.

JurassicClark · 02/07/2024 07:34

I think you have to have the right brand of shoes for your feet. Find the ones that fit your foot shape and stick to them.

DD owns 3 pairs of Converse in varying stages of collapse. She wears them to death, finds them amazingly comfortable. Doc Martens made her feet blister til they bleed.

I can’t walk more than half an hour in Converse without them killing me but can put in a new pair of Docs and I’m away.

omega4ever · 02/07/2024 08:11

Just sold mine on vinted... so uncomfortable.

Bluesclues1 · 02/07/2024 08:15

I have very wide feet and wear the slightly chunkier, platform ones religiously - just did 30,000 steps a day at Glastonbury in them with no issues.

Restaurantcritic · 02/07/2024 08:19

The platform ones are really comfy actually

like PP I prefer Vans.

Coronado2 · 02/07/2024 08:25

I have wide feet but have always found converse comfortable as long as I don't try to walk to far in them on the first few wears, if I don't hey rub my little toe. Once I've worn them in I've worn them for days I've done 8 miles of walking with no problem.

Branleuse · 02/07/2024 08:27

I wouldn't wear them if i was going to do a lot of walking, as they dont have cushioning or support enough for me.

Branleuse · 02/07/2024 08:27

In fact i find most of the skater brands too flat soled for me. Vans etc
