Clothes for flight

CosmicLove · 29/06/2024 16:38

We have a flight to Spain in a couple of weeks and I'm keen to travel in something light that I can also wear on holiday. Every year I go in jeans and then they're never worn again! It would save some space in case if I could think of an outfit that would fit both purposes (holiday and flight) without looking like I'm off to the beach at the airport! Has anyone cracked this before and have any suggestions? TIA xx

Light silky wide leg (elasticated) trousers (ankle grazers) Light T shirt and cardi for the plane. That's my outfit every time. You pick the footwear you like the best.

I find that light flowy trousers are far more comfortable than a dress and ironically are much cooler too, no chub rub either.

Where you going? Have a great time.

hastalav · 29/06/2024 16:47

OOOPS! I see you mentioned Spain, I must read more carefully! And by the way you can (I do) pair the trousers I wear onboard with a nice top for going out while away too. I travel super light, and I've learned over the years that we bring far too much stuff half of which is never used.

CosmicLove · 29/06/2024 18:00

@hastalav thank you for the tip! I'm the same - take loads of things that I never even wear. I'm determined to travel light this time! Thanks again xx

I tend to live in dresses anyway. But it is such a short flight and it's summer. Just wear anything that you would wear while away, Simply avoid a white top or white skirt/trousers.

soupfiend · 29/06/2024 18:41

Never take anything which is going to drag on the airport or airplane toilet floors when you pull them down to sit on the loo, those elasticated waist silky wide leg trousers will get covered in piss
Same while you're abroad too, their toilets are always horrendous, never seen worse than Rome though to be fair

Thats why I always wear jeans, ankle length too

SherlocksDeerstalker · 29/06/2024 18:44

‘Their’ toilets?! Whose? ‘Aborad’s’?? 😂 I love the idea that all toilets not based in the UK are covered in piss.

hastalav · 29/06/2024 18:44

I hope you enjoy your trip. Just to say, I'm heading to Rome and Pompeii via Naples later in the year for 5 days. Believe it or not, I have set myself the challenge of just using the Ryanair size UNDERSEAT bag to see how I get on. I reckon I won't need much since I don't go out much at night anymore, but spend the whole day mooching around and checking out everything, then I fall into bed exhausted!.

However..... I am paying for priority + 10kgs on the return journey just in case I buy some nice things in Italy. I have a great fold up sturdy bag that holds loads and can go in the overhead if needed and will fit in the little outward bag. But I fully intend to see how I get on with just the underseat backpack anyway. Should be fun!

Exactly this. Loos vary throughout the world. And the UK maybe better than some generally but not top of the list.

It's a shame Singapore is so far away to go for a wee!

I think you must go to the wrong toilets, and use the wrong planes! I've never experienced anything like you said.

Anyway wild horses would not have me wearing jeans in anything higher than 20degrees. Imagine trekking around Rome roasting in ankle length jeans. Mad

PinkTonic · 29/06/2024 18:52

I always wear light trousers and a T-shirt, with a cardigan for the home end and plane. I’m aiming to arrive in something suitable for the climate but I don’t wear the travel outfit whilst I’m there, I think by the time you’ve travelled to the airport, hung around for at least a couple of hours and then another few hours on a plane, then coach or taxi, that outfit has had a good wearing in some grubby environments. Maybe rewear some other outfits that have only been worn for an evening to cut down on luggage.

Some here too, but generally cafes and places we've been on holiday have unisex toilets, only one perhaps, used by men of course, so there is wee and wet all over the floor. I have beautiful long wide leg trousers often ruined for the day, Ive learned the hard way unfortunately

Maddy70 · 29/06/2024 18:54

Baggy hippy trousers that you can wear at night when the mosquitoes are biting

Jeans for the flight

I treked round Rome in my lovely wide leg trousers, got covered in most toilets, I ended up doing some sort of circus contortion in most toilets to avoid my trousers hitting the floor, couldnt put a bag on the floor either and never any hooks, this was from the smallest cafe to the poshest restaurant, rarely locked, rarely flushed, never a seat.

Maddy70 · 29/06/2024 18:57

You wont wear jeans. Its tooo hot for those. Light hippy pants or a midi dress is what you need

Why not white trousers/skirt or top? Genuine question as I'm flying abroad soon and haven't flown for years. I'm wondering if I missed something fashion or otherwise!? Is it because it looks too holiday- ish for the airport?😀

oh good luck with just your underseat bag! After seeing so many others apparently travelling with just a well stuffed small bag I gave it a go last month for 2 days/nights in Krakow. I managed, just about, but didn't find it easy (I travelled solo and didn't need going out/evening outfits either)!

OP - for short haul, I'd wear a simple holiday type day outfit that you can still wear on your arrival day e.g. lightweight cropped trousers/long shorts/t-shirt/top but with a cardi over for travelling out.

Probably because you're more likely to have a Cinzano moment wearing white on a plane😉

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/06/2024 20:01

Lightweight wide cropped trousers, a vest top and a cotton cardigan. Or a sleeveless midi dress and cotton cardigan.

I usually travel in my trainers and pack sandals.

Lifestooshort71 · 29/06/2024 20:03

I go to Spain for 4 nights regularly with just an underseat bag. Travel in cotton/viscose strappy midi dress (that I'll wear in the evening) with soft lightweight woolly for the flight.

Isabelle70 · 29/06/2024 20:05

I have just flown yesterday for a weekend trip and wore a Hush jersey jumpsuit with a chambray open shirt. It was only a short flight so I made sure to use the toilets before boarding and I hate aircraft toilets anyway and avoid at all costs.
I am also away next week and the Jumpsuit combo is going to be worn again but maybe with a white linen shirt.

Not fashion! Simply because I’m a messy girl in flight. Red wine, coffee, food blobs and add to that a touch of turbulence and l look like a care in the community patient when l get off and go to passports 😀.

I have several almost blob proof dresses that l call my flying dresses.

SuperSharpShooter · 29/06/2024 20:18

Baggy Oskar linen trousers with massive pockets, vest top and a new Adidas hoody.
Worn the same linen pants for about 17 years of flights but treat myself to a new holiday hoody most trips.

Ah ok, good point, me too I'd probably get refused entry to my holiday destination!

hastalav · 29/06/2024 21:09

@TheWeeDonkeyFella LOL at the small bag experiment! I'm heading to Oxford soon for a few days and I trialled the little bag last night (travelling from EU) to see how much I could get away with. I don't wear dresses unless it's a wedding or something glam, so two pairs trousers, two T-shirts, one long sleeve top for cold just in case, two nice tops, a long sleeve shirt for throwover, trainer socks, undies, T shirt nightie, decant toothpaste, face cream etc. into little pots, use a little pack of deodorant wipes, make up (minimal, just powder foundation, blush and lip). So far all in and there is still space!

All my stuff is lightweight though and viscose or silky, uncrushable so I can throw them around. I will also have the "journey gear" on me - chinos, t shirt, cardi and rainjacket + trainers for walking. Since I don't go out at night, the trainers will do for going to lunch and for coffee. It's a Cabin Max Metz bag and it is a flippin Tardis so far!

Lemonademoney · 29/06/2024 21:14

Just debating the same issue. I think I’m going to wear a floaty shirt and thin cotton crop trousers on plain (ankle grazers so no touching floor if I need the loo 😂) then I’ve bought the matching shorts to the shirt which I’ll pop in my hand luggage and change into when we arrive at our destination. Easy and I’ll probably wear the shorts set again during the holiday (trousers will be worn on journey home)
