How often do you dye your hair?

coco111 · 28/06/2024 11:34

I'm 34 and have been dyeing my hair to cover grey hair forever! I started going grey around 20! I use to be able to do it every 4 weeks but recently it's like every 2! I don't j own if they've changed the dye or my hair is just going greyer quicker tbh. I use garnier olia frozen brown. Can anybody recommend any good home dyes? I did go to the hairdresser a few times but tbh it came back just as quick!

I use the Live brand. I dye my roots once every 3-4 weeks. In between if I need to I use a colour spray.

permanently · 28/06/2024 12:20

All grey these days. Very short. Get lots of compliments. Give it a go! Your eyes will pop and your skin will glow. Nature knows best!!

SummerBarbecues · 28/06/2024 12:22

I use L'oreal casting which is non permanent. If you are colouring so frequently, I don't think you need permanent hair colours.

LaWench · 28/06/2024 12:25

My hairdresser does my roots every 3 weeks for the last 3yrs. My first grey appear at 19yrs. My hair is very dark and the shiny silvers are too obvious at 4 weeks.

GogAndMagog · 28/06/2024 12:25

Too often! I just dye the roots, using equal measures from the box dye.

You can pre-treat the grey with the colour tube as the amonia helps open the hair shaft. Apply to greys, leave for five / 10 mins and then apply your colour.

I would also suggest using professional colour like Majirel (sp).

I am fed up with it but look awful grey - I think some skin tones can get away with it and it looks stunning but not me (very pale skin).

IHateAC · 28/06/2024 12:25

I went grey by 21 and dyed my hair regularly for almost three decades. It’s much happier and healthier now but when I was dyeing it I had to touch up my roots every other week. I bought professional Wella products from salonsdirect.com (after some research and saved a fortune, only mixing a little as and when needed. Highly recommend!

longdistanceclaraclara · 28/06/2024 12:28

I don't bc I developed an allergy after pregnancy. Am now sporting cruella streaks. Im lucky in the way it's come through, and I haven't had to grow out roots.

What colour do you do it @coco111 ? Are you dying it dark - like shades of browns...?

Do it blonde. All women I know who do it blonde, only have to do it every 2 months. Grey hardly shows through when it's blonde.

WhereAreWeNow · 28/06/2024 13:50

When you say you're having to dye more often, is it because the colour has faded all over or is it just new roots showing?
If the colour isn't taking, I would swap to Majirel or INOA with 20vol developer.
If it's just growing super fast, you might need to think about going lighter or getting highlights/lowlights to make the regrowth less obvious. Or going grey...

sweetnessandlighter · 28/06/2024 13:55

Never. Was getting it done every four weeks but the cost, time and unnecessary chemical exposure felt silly. Stopped dyeing a couple of years ago. Am young to be grey but don't care - I think it looks fine as nature intended.

protectoroftherealm · 28/06/2024 15:28

I have to do my roots every 2 weeks! And no, I will not 'embrace' my greys anymore than I'd embrace Donald Trump.

Me too, it's looks awful while it growing out but it's really worth persevering.

TheOGCCL · 28/06/2024 15:46

I box dye my hair 2-3 times a year which seems to keep my grey at bay, though I do use temporary wash in/out colours (winter time) and do at home highlights (summer time) as well, to the point it’s hard to tell how much grey I have and what colour my hair is now naturally (aged 48). I enjoy experimenting.

The greys literally will start coming through a few days after dyeing. It's the ones around the ears and hairline that are the worst. No way of hiding them whatever style I do.

I have olive skin and quite dark brown hair. I would love to go lighter like caramel to see if that hides them more but the hairdresser said I've been using permanent hair dye for so so long that it's basically impossible to go lighter. The silver greys will start coming back a few days after dyeing. The hair line and around the ears are the worst. I can't hide them. It just makes me feel so much older then k actually am.

Girlputyourrecordson · 29/06/2024 09:49

Do you think you could try another salon? Might be worth asking around to get a really good colourist who might be able to help you go a bit lighter

I reckon lighter hair is lower maintenance for greys.

I do love the look of grey hair but totally understand you not being ready for it if you think it ages you a lot.

henlake7 · 29/06/2024 10:56

I only do mine about every 6-8 wks TBH.
I have blond hair which helps. Also my hair is cut into a bob with fringe and the roots kinda hide underneath!

Beebumble2 · 29/06/2024 12:10

Odd thing for your hairdresser to say, re the permanent dye.I was naturally dark brown, genetically programmed to start going grey at around 30. Over the years, decades, I gradually the hairdresser dyed my lighter. It did cover the greys in a nice kind of highlighted way. Once there was more grey/ white than colour I stopped dying. I have often been complemented on the natural colour.

Yeah this. ^ No way in hell will I ever 'embrace the grey.'

I also struggle to believe posters who claim they get complimented all the time on their grey hair. I mean, why on earth would people compliment your grey hair? Confused Does anyone ever actually compliment anyone's hair colour? How bizarre.

I always see posters on threads like this claiming that everyone compliments their grey hair. And I do doubt it.

If it is actually happening, they are probably patronising you/just trying to be nice. I doubt if anyone genuinely really loves it, (OR actually wants it like that themselves!)

TheShellBeach · 29/06/2024 14:40

Well, I'm nearly 68 and I've been dyeing my hair for thirty years.

I do not like grey hair and I think it ages women.

Until six months ago I used a mid to darkish blonde L'Oréal dye, but now I'm going for a really dark blonde, and I prefer it. My natural colour was light brown.

I colour it every six weeks at home.

Daisy54 · 29/06/2024 14:40

I do my roots every 2 weeks with henna. It’s a long (4hours in) and messy process. But I get a deep , multidimensional red with lots of shine. And it never fades.
I am currently about 75% grey in the front and 25% in the back.
The day I have more grey, better proportioned , will be the day I stop colouring.
I don’t mind looking older.

Which numbers are you using @TheShellBeach ? I’m same age and colouring as you; being dying over 30 years as started greying early. I had moved from a 5 up to a 6 to lighten it a bit, but no matter the brand I ended up gingery. I’ve gone back to a 5 for now.

6 seems to be right for me.
5 is too dark.
7 I sometimes get a ginger effect lol.

Flossflower · 29/06/2024 15:27

I think you probably need to dye it a shade lighter or a higher number. I have been dying my hair for about 40 years and I am still not ready to embrace the grey. As my real hair has been going whiter and whiter, the dye I use has been going lighter and lighter. I started at 2 and I am now on 8. It also fits in better with my ageing complexion.
