So this is an aspect of my new job which I'm coming to terms with. Any tips on what I can do? Theres an event next week wherebill be very much 'on show'. I'm late 40s, what says groomed, professional, and attractive all at once to you all?

Babbahabba · 26/06/2024 19:20

What job/industry is it?

FusionChefGeoff · 26/06/2024 19:20

I'd leave 😂

Sorry I think unless you're an actual runway model this is very outdated.

Presumably you don't get up and think "fuck this I'll just wear my pyjamas" then I'm sure you look fine

Princessfluffy · 26/06/2024 19:30

Estate agent?

ForForToo · 26/06/2024 19:30

What industry and what’s the event?

Im all for taking care of yourself and projecting the right image at work, but why do you ‘have to’ look good?

Princessfluffy · 26/06/2024 19:31

Perfume sales assistant?
TV presenter?

DisneyHag · 26/06/2024 19:51

Depends if you’re a

Madam

or a

Ma’am

There are loads of jobs where on days there's no client meetings very casual is fine- but if it's client facing very casual is not fine.

PaminaMozart · 26/06/2024 19:54

One of Princess Kate's trouser suits.

Ok the "attractive" seems unnecessary. I can think of plenty of jobs where if it's client facing where casual really won't do- but "attractive" ?

StarDolphins · 26/06/2024 19:58

Gosh I feel sorry for you, I WFH & look a MESS! Yesterday I was speaking to a Headteacher & all of a sudden she said “I’ll FaceTime you & show you” I nearly cried, got extremely hot & just said ok!! I was so embarrassed!

I think as long as you have clean (reasonably stylish) clothes, hair clean & brushed & maybe a bit of mascara/blush you will be fine. The main thing is friendly & smiling!

misssunshine4040 · 26/06/2024 20:06

Attractive is surely not a must.

A trouser suit or if smart casual then a blazer with dark jeans and loafers.
Definitely a nice blazer over everything helps you look professional and pulled together.

Freshly washed hair and natural makeup if you wear it. Clean groomed nails with either a neutral colour or natural.

Everything clean ironed and in good condition

Allwelcone · 26/06/2024 20:10

I know I hate the attractive thing but the older male bosses are well older male bosses, and the event is for the positively ancient rich. and we are so desperate for money I am happy to nod and smile and even do my nails.
Sickening to a guilty feminist. Thanks for the tips will hunt down a blazer.

I have to dress very professionally at work and yes would need to take care before an event to be very well groomed with nice clothes on. I don’t wear a full suit usually but maybe a dress and jacket, or smart trousers and a blouse. No heels, never heels, I can’t be arsed. Always nice make up and clean hair which has been either blow dried or put up. I think just overall yes I’ve made a general effort is absolutely enough, you don’t need to go overkill

Princessfluffy · 26/06/2024 20:12

Turkey teeth hair extensions eyebrow tatts and lip filler kind of style, is that what you mean?

Comedycook · 26/06/2024 20:12

Get your hair blow dried.

goingdownfighting · 26/06/2024 20:20

Groom well but simply.
Glossy hair, no make up make up with a bit of mascara and chiselled but not obvious cheekbones. Sparkling teeth. But not over whitened or 'done'

Heels with trousers that cover them with a silk shirt and blazer. Get real silk from vinted.

In fact all natural fibres where possible or very good viscose

A loose modern shift or equivalent and a blazer

Creamy leather tote, discreet metal hardware

Smell expensive

Pretty, delicate jewellery.

Keep your chin level with the floor. Good posture. Do Pilates

I do this kind of job but I have to dumb down the glamour - I sit on public enquiries so very serious but have to be impeccable.

Put your comfy clothes and shoes in your locker.

katmarie · 26/06/2024 20:21

I went to a two week onsite event with a senior client a few weeks ago. I got a good haircut, neat, easy to manage, easy to make look polished. Did my nails in a neutral pink shade. Took a selection of tailored and semi tailored dresses in neutral colours or nice floral prints, a couple of blazer style jackets and a couple of fine knit cardigans that mixed and matched with all of the dresses. I refreshed my makeup bag, and took understated simple jewellery and a good watch. I also took some coordinating ballet flat shoes.

They rocked up in jeans and sandals.Grin

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 26/06/2024 20:23

Chiselled but no obvious cheekbones?? is this actually serious?

I could bend over the ancients benny hill style, might kill them off!!

@goingdownfighting thanks, good tips
I'm especially bad at remembering to re-touch make up I'm more like right I've done that now and end up looking bright red and frizzy at then end of the day

Sickening! I think I'll go with quite a boring black Jaeger dress
boxy blazer,
comfy low heels,
blow dry,
minimal make up,
gold earrings as my only jewellery
blow dry (can't get it professionally done sadly).

My bag is an ancient Mulberry which can fit my heels on when I walk there, I can hide it once there.
Oh crap and nails. Fake tan legs.

I know what you mean but it's awful to say, and it shouldn't be like this, but I've noticed I get taken more seriously if I look 'nice', sad but true in my work culture.
I don't compromise what I say though and speak up and behance professionally.

Was attractive on the job description or have you added it to smart/professional?
