Petite Jeans - should I give up my RI Skinnies (i'm 50)

startingoveragainagain · 24/06/2024 22:52

Ok, i've been wearing River Island Skinnies for longer than I can remember. I need to buy a new pair of dark smart (work / (nice top and)) Jean Jeans.

I'm flexible on price, and just love that I can go into RI and buy petite jeans without having to have them taken up.

Are skinnies really out for a 50 year old woman?

The fashion industry requires a constant change of "what's in" and what's no longer in to generate sales. It's tiresome and wasteful and very bad for the environment.

There has been ‘fashion’ for as long as there have been human beings. Evolving styles (even when they evolve in a circle) are a reflection of our constant human striving for novelty and improvement and reinvention. I cannot believe anyone would want that instinct crushed out of us.

Of course there are exploitative manufacturers - but that isn’t a reason for shutting down an entire global industry and setting the AI to produce 70 million grey boiler suits. It’s up to us to pay attention and shop and make and wear with discernment.

I'm clinging on to skinnies! I would really love other styles, but as a fellow shortie (5ft0) all the other styles I try have to be worn with heels - I just can't get them short enough.
The petite lengths (esp M&S) have got longer, so while they look great with heels, if I'm in converse they're way too long, which also then makes them look bulky in the lower leg. My skinnies can be turned up just enough while still keeping a slim shape.

Yes I could pay to have the length altered, but it adds a lot to do that on every new pair of trousers / jeans.

Yeah and it’s a massive employer in the uk and we export a lot of design talent.

People will always want to adorn themselves.

henlake7 · 25/06/2024 14:07

Ive never really worn skinnies but I did notice I was the only person in town (when I was there, obviously!) in wide legged jeans. The only person even close was a very elderly lady with a zimmer frame in wide legged trousers!😅

So I suppose it depends if you want to be 'Vogue fashionable' or 'local high st fashionable'.....bearing in mind that most people are more likely to walk the aisles at Tesco then the runway!

I don’t think it will.

I used to lecture history of fashion. Skinny jeans were a mega trend. Meaning they lasted for ages.

But there comes a point in every style when it looks ridiculous. They aren’t there yet. But they will be at some point. They only reappear properly after that point. Older people will eventually adopt younger styles although not extreme versions.

People misguidedly call them
classics. But they aren’t, they are too extreme for that. Classic is a blue straight leg.

Edited

Yeah, except that Balenciaga, Celine, McQueen and Ralph Lauren are all showing them on the runway again. Granted, they're not the painted on jeggings look, but still are clearly skinny. It takes the high street a while to catch up, but it will trickle down.

Skinnies have been out for ages, I haven't worn them since 2016. Sadly I feel dated in my beloved mom jeans too now. Maybe skinnies have been out for so long they're circling back in?!

I'm also short and have found jeans I like from PLT petite and Pull & Bear, on the higher end Levi's offer short length and I have some cropped styles from Zara and H&M that work.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 25/06/2024 15:37

I really don't think "most women" still wear skinny jeans. I've not had any since about 2015ish (on the day we moved in to this house in June 2015 I was in Topshop mom jeans) and none of my friends wear them any more. They never looked good on me anyway as a pear-shaped person so I was glad to see the back of them! I teach undergraduates and definitely don't see many young women in skinny jeans now - leggings with sports socks have replaced them where people want a narrow/fitted bottom half.

I'm taller with a big arse so these might not be any use for you, but all my jeans are Levi's as I prefer a more rigid denim. They have loads of styles so worth trying on a few and see if any feel good. I like the 501 90s jeans and the Baggy Dad jeans which are wider, and the 80s Mom. I also have a fab pair of Levi's balloon leg jeans which I got on Depop for pennies but I don't think they do those as a current style now. (Levi's offer free alterations in the store here which is handy if they come up too long. I'm a 10/12 and tend to get a 29 waist and 30 leg as a rule.)

I'm 59 and wear my skinny jeans daily
Not the same pair obviously!
They are the best fit for my small frame and I can't even bear the thought of material flapping around.
I have short legs and buy my jeans from
Hollister of all places
Wear whatever jeans you like, from whatever shop you like!

FeetLing · 25/06/2024 15:42

Wear what you want and feel comfortable in OP. I much prefer skinny jeans rather than the baggy ones. If I’m honest, I don’t think the baggy ones are particularly flattering on most people of most shapes regardless of age. They certainly aren’t flattering on me.

Yeah but this happens.

Occasionally they are introduced too early and don’t catch on.

l still think there needs to be an extended period of time where they aren’t worn for them to be fashionable again.

lindyloo57 · 25/06/2024 22:21

If you want to try a new style, I'm 5ft 2 just brought some mango jeans called Catherine wide leg cropped, they are full length on me , fit is lovely, close fitting on bum and thighs with wide, not too wide leg.

mollyfolk · 25/06/2024 22:34

I’m small and a bit chubby. Have been loving my Harper Supersoft Cigarette Jeans from M&S - they are fitted, high wasted, don’t add bulk. They are so comfortable as well, lots of stretch.

TheOGCCL · 25/06/2024 23:39

I stopped wearing skinnies a year or so back but have found myself drawn back to them again lately. I think it’s because, without wearing heels, they are the best for making my short legs look longer and give me an elegance I just can’t seem to get with looser styles. I think it all depends on your body and your style.

I'm 100% happy for people here to tell me I look dated, so that whilst walking around in public people don't look at me and think I look dated.

But you wouldn't hear them 😂😂😂

startingoveragainagain · 07/07/2024 21:18

I ordered the Reiss ones, as I needed to order some new work trousers (which I always buy from Reiss as the length is perfect), the jeans were so long, way too long to be petite, I returned them to Next and the girl at the checkout (also petite) said they were supposed to be long, but I literally would've fallen over in them (in fact, I'm not sure I would've been able to walk in them), so it's back to the drawing board.
I went to London in the week and no-one was wearing skinnies... so I definitely want to find some non skinnies...

I live in my Reiss Bailey jeans. They are slim not skinny. I'm only 5ft 2 with most of my length being in my body and big boobs (G) so hard to pull off wider styles.

I just got a pair of baileys in a lighter wash from vinted for £11 posted in a petite length so they are ankle length on me

I also like my m&s high waisted lily jeans. I have short for wearing with boots and extra short for flats.
