Petite Jeans - should I give up my RI Skinnies (i'm 50)

startingoveragainagain · 24/06/2024 22:52

Ok, i've been wearing River Island Skinnies for longer than I can remember. I need to buy a new pair of dark smart (work / (nice top and)) Jean Jeans.

I'm flexible on price, and just love that I can go into RI and buy petite jeans without having to have them taken up.

Are skinnies really out for a 50 year old woman?

Magpie50 · 25/06/2024 04:12

No, they are only out on social media and in magazines.....in the real world most women still wear them.
(I paid close attention in town the other day. Majority of women were wearing skinnies or black leggings. )

shuffleofftobuffalo · 25/06/2024 06:16

There are plenty of skinnies in the shops, because people are still buying and wearing them!

If you want to experiment you could try on different styles and see what you think. Looks like RI have various options, also try M&S in the short length (I'm also petite and those are great).

I'm a great fan of just buying and wearing what makes you happy!

BlanklyMyDear · 25/06/2024 06:56

Refusing to evolve your style is definitely out for a 50 year old woman.

Don’t you want to try something new? For yourself - and to demonstrate that women in their 50s are flexible and open to new ideas?

(Am much older than you …)

Icecreamcone100 · 25/06/2024 06:59

I’d try a different style see if you like it. I’ve recently bought petite bootcut jeans from M&S and also New Look so a short length in skinnies, bootcut, flared, mom style etc so lots of options.

perhapsatea · 25/06/2024 07:21

Yes, they really are. PP is right though, lots of people do still wear them - they look really dated. As others will no doubt point out - it doesn't mean you shouldn't wear what you like. But dated they definitely are.

Loads of places do petite jeans - just a case of finding the ones you like (and if that's skinny - then go for it!). Im a similar age and straight leg worn slightly shorter are working for me. And lightweight wide leg 'linen' type trousers look surprisingly good on me - I was a hesitant because I'm also petite.

I also have a cheat pair of skinnies - they have pockets on the thighs - like a cargo but skinny - have them in green and stone - they give me my skinny jean fix without being denim skinny! Look good with a white tshirt!

I notice this too. Maybe 10% less skinny, and they might be called something else (slim high waist ankle grazer etc), but a lot of people are still basically wearing skinnies and mom jeans. Less so teens and 20s but definitely above that age.

And when I look through the sale rails I see hundreds of pairs of cropped wide leg jeans, bootleg, barrel leg etc.

startingoveragainagain · 25/06/2024 09:45

Umm ok - so a bit split then. I like to keep current, so maybe I'll get a pair of something else...

How about these https://www.reiss.com/style/su297253/b66052#b66052 Looks like so much material for a petite person :/

Why the viscose addition? I’m old school so expect jeans to look stiff.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 25/06/2024 10:09

If you have the concave midriff of the model in that picture, go for it. If you have any kind of menopausal bulge, try them on and stand sideways before buying (the voice of experience).

IAmAnAdultHumanFemale · 25/06/2024 10:13

how lovely! Women calling other women 'dated' 🙄

TizerorFizz · 25/06/2024 10:15

@startingoveragainagain Im nearly 20 years older than you but I love wide leg jeans. My DDs are 31 and 29 and they never ever wear skinny jeans now. Just don’t. They like wider jeans, mom jeans or cut offs. They don’t mind frayed edges. Tend to choose lighter denim. I don’t. I’m dark denim. I also like lighter weight denim. M&S do this. DD2 is size 6 so very slim. Tends to like Zara and they always up to date on trends.

Nope. People have said skinny jeans look dated.

Anyone can wear what they want - but the OP has asked for opinions, on a Style & Beauty board. If women having opinions on clothes upsets you, why not read something else?

BobbyBiscuits · 25/06/2024 10:24

I'm pretty delighted to cast my skinnies to the 'maybe they'll come back in' pile. Bloody uncomfy things. I love the trend for baggy pants right now, I'm wearing some that look like I'd wear to a squat rave in the late 90s, lol.
I'd say try something a bit different, but nothing wrong with wearing what you feel comfortable in.

IAmAnAdultHumanFemale · 25/06/2024 10:39

I guess the skinny jeans just walk down the street by themselves then

startingoveragainagain · 25/06/2024 10:51

I'm 100% happy for people here to tell me I look dated, so that whilst walking around in public people don't look at me and think I look dated.

OP posts:
BlanklyMyDear · 25/06/2024 10:54

But human beings can’t be described as ‘dated’. Confused

They might have outdated ideas, or wear outdated clothes - their teachings or creative output may fall out of fashion - but a person themselves can’t be outdated, so your point is rubbish,@IAmAnAdultHumanFemale . Grin

MartyFunkhouser · 25/06/2024 11:00

If you want to be fashionable, yes they’re out right now and they do look really dated.

In my office, I have noticed that no women are wearing them anymore.

I found it hard to ditch mine, but I’m loving wide legs and ‘mom’ style now and I can’t see me going back to skinnies any time soon.

HighFiveMummy · 25/06/2024 11:17

Those Reiss jeans are lovely, and even though they come in petite and mid rise, I feel that the wide leg will swamp me as I am only 5.1". Anyone seen similar un straight leg?

Reiss only seemed to have wide legged ones. I buy a lot of other clothes from there which was why I looked. I only ever buy Jeans now from RI, but not ripped etc - so as I was moving away from skinny thought i'd look elsewhere.

OP posts:
TizerorFizz · 25/06/2024 12:41

RI are usually for the young. My DDs don’t shop there. I think most brands are going wider at the moment. Why not buy the same leg width as you would buy in trousers? Then you know it suits. Zara have such a wide choice. I tend not to think of Reiss for jeans but most mid range high street shops have decent jeans. I think the skinny look is dated - goes back to Kate Moss really.

I stopped wearing them about 5 years ago. Dd never wears them.

Those Reiss jeans look great. Having said that, I’m in the wear-what-you-like camp, so if skinnies are your thing that’s fine too!

Wear what you like.

The fashion industry requires a constant change of "what's in" and what's no longer in to generate sales. It's tiresome and wasteful and very bad for the environment.

Give it a couple of years and all the wide legged and barrel legged jeans will be considered "dated" and narrow and skinny jeans will be back in again.

It all goes round and round.

I don’t think it will.

I used to lecture history of fashion. Skinny jeans were a mega trend. Meaning they lasted for ages.

But there comes a point in every style when it looks ridiculous. They aren’t there yet. But they will be at some point. They only reappear properly after that point. Older people will eventually adopt younger styles although not extreme versions.

People misguidedly call them
classics. But they aren’t, they are too extreme for that. Classic is a blue straight leg.
