I'm starting a new healthy living programme as of today and want to start getting to my bed early.
Do any of you use a lovely smelling shower gel that will have me all relaxed and drowsy for heading to bed?

Any and all other sleep tips gratefully received.
I'm aiming to be in bed for 9p.m and hopefully asleep before 10p.m

The thisworks Deep Sleep range has a lovely, calming lavender scent and (no pun intended) does seem to actually work.

NiceUnusualDifferent · 24/06/2024 19:47

I've managed to switch to 9pm bed, sleep by 10.
Magnesium supplement around 8pm, lush sleepy cream smells lovely, pillow spray. Phone away then I read for half an hour or so.

Make your bedroom as cool as possible.
Dim lights and read a book (kindle works for me but a physical book is probably better) an hour before you want to fall asleep.

Don't have a shower before bed. A bath, yes an hour before. I use the Avon lavender bath stuff and pillow spray. I have a royal degree in insomnia! Having retired after over 30 years working nights..... nursing. I get the teeth cleaned, make up off, moisturizer on, about an hour before going to bed. Dim the living room light,no screens. You have to make a ritual.

Podcasts. In Our Time is particularly soporific.

I would dearly love a bath but unfortunately I only have a shower room.
I'm thinking of ways to make it more relaxing, looking at ways of providing safe dim light as the light in there is super bright.

I'm loving all these ideas.
I'm sure I've got some magnesium supplements somewhere, going to see if I can find them.
About to ditch the phone, find a gentle book and head to bed.
I'll read through the thread in the morning, hopefully there will be even more tips and I can make a list.

Lush have a nice lavender based range called Sleepy. The shower gel is lovely.

lap90 · 24/06/2024 20:25

Magnesium glycinate.

If you have a bath rather than a shower, aromatherapy associates deep relax is unbelievable. It's almost like a drug. I wouldn't have believed something you could put in a bath could be so soporific.

It's not cheap but you can get mini-bottles of it in mixed kits that are cheaper to try it out. Does need to be a relax in a hot bath soaking though not a shower to get this effect.

mini kit - also around Christmas time they often have mini bottle gift selections

sorry just seen you only have a shower room.

Take an antihistamine that is drowsy, helps protect flare up from insect bites in Summer too.

This is not a healthy or sustainable solution.

Soothing Pod on Spotify
It's some form of relaxation at the start then some version of a very calming story. I rarely get to the story

LettuceTruss · 24/06/2024 21:02

The Balance app is good. Plus This Works pillow spray and a magnesium supplement. And a hot chocolate.

Ispywithmylittlepie · 24/06/2024 21:04

I use body shop lavender "sleep" range. It cost much more than I'd usually shell out but it's really very good. You can get body butter or massage oil. I listen to spa + meditation music on YouTube in the dark. I have tinnitus so have to work on relaxation and getting to sleep. Good luck!

Imogensmith · 24/06/2024 21:12

I love using the calm app. I usually read for 30-40 minutes then drift off to a sleep story

Fathomless · 24/06/2024 23:42

A walk in the evening calms me down ready for bed

Magnesium glycinate.

Is this the same as Chelated magnesium?

solsticelove · 25/06/2024 00:11

Better You Magnesium body spray 😴

Mossstitch · 25/06/2024 00:34

I use lavender essential oils, few drops in the bottom of your shower tray gives a delightful steamy aroma and very relaxing, or couple of drops on your pillow.
Faith in nature do a lovely lavender body lotion if you prefer that before bed.

Bluebellsinthewind · 25/06/2024 00:59

Fab tips on this thread. I was going to add a bath with epsom salts but seen you have a shower.

Moisturise face/body
Yoga
You could switch your bathroom light off and light a candle.
YouTube have good neck/shoulder/face exercises for relaxation
Second the balance app
File and paint nails
Foot spa treatments
Nice pjs
Nice bedset
Don't take phone into bedroom/no TV etc
Write in a journal
Wear comfy bed socks

I have a heavy throw on top of my duvet so it's like a weight blanket

That's all I can think of just now

Mmhmmn · 25/06/2024 01:24

Bath would probably be better than shower for increasing drowsiness. Have a look at This Works products. They also do lavender pillow mist. Sleep stuff is often lavender based.

Sweetenuf · 25/06/2024 01:41

I need to look into having a bath instead of a shower. Taking note of all these sleep tips so I’m not up at nearly 2am again anytime soon 😆
