Hi. I'm going to be 60 in a couple of weeks and am really trying to come to terms with it. Although it's said I 'don't look my age' (whatever 60 looks like) and I've always been quite fashionable (in a slightly alternative way), I feel I've lost my way a bit style wise. I'm heavier than I'd like to be (Size 14, 5'7") and just feeling a bit bleugh. But I'm having a small party for my birthday and would like to buy something new to wear for the occasion. Hopefully it will be warm and we'll be in the garden - although no guarantees. Something quite casual I think. Any ideas gratefully accepted!

This is gorgeous, and I imagine it would suit quite a few figures - including mine!

Lots of people like to wear predictable and nice clothing.

Wearing a ridiculously oversized off the shoulder denim top with strange maxi denim skirt would look dreadful on me (turned 60 this year). And we're all different - so not saying it wouldn't suit someone out there!

I am afraid I have to be rude and say that I hated that denim top and maxi skirt. Bladdy awful. I'd feel as though I was taking up all the space in the room in that outfit, like some huge out of season denim christmas tree.

Be more Vivienne?

Wink

You mean, be more wealthy?

Well, I’m not the OP - and she will have her own opinion - but I’m fascinated by your observation, @LazyGewl. I come from people whose aim, when getting dressed, is to take up space and be seen. I really struggle with the predominant MN attitude of choosing clothes to make oneself look as small as possible.

I’m guessing you’re not a fan of Phoebe Philo? She really seems to get taking up space:

Ha ha - perhaps! Well we'll have to see what it looks like on when/if it arrives - not sure if you saw if I'd ordered it, along with a lovely pair of wrap-front culottes. I thought it was worth a shot and if it looks awful it can just go back. In the meantime, as you'll see upthread I've bought a few perhaps safer options (for me), which showed DP this morning and he approved of them all. Not that that really matters of course, but always good to have a second opinion.

There’s taking up space and there’s “taking up space”. I think philo makes an impact, which is very different to a walking denim Xmas tree sucking all the air out of the place. But I understand it might look very different irl.
