60th birthday outfit ideas please

Hi. I'm going to be 60 in a couple of weeks and am really trying to come to terms with it. Although it's said I 'don't look my age' (whatever 60 looks like) and I've always been quite fashionable (in a slightly alternative way), I feel I've lost my way a bit style wise. I'm heavier than I'd like to be (Size 14, 5'7") and just feeling a bit bleugh. But I'm having a small party for my birthday and would like to buy something new to wear for the occasion. Hopefully it will be warm and we'll be in the garden - although no guarantees. Something quite casual I think. Any ideas gratefully accepted!

I am not a print person, but that is lovely and appropriate for the occasion. I usually like Cos but that denim ensemble looks too dark and heavy for a warm garden party. I see some other beautiful stuff on Plumo.
Sadly, I am on a no buy this year!

Nocashforcashmere · 26/06/2024 15:06

Well, since you refer to having your own notifications turned off CountryCousin you clearly are aware that @ generates an email to a named poster unless they also have notifications turned off. It may be your usual practice and you simply regard it as an engagement with a particular comment but to me it feels like being poked in the back to respond.

Meh, maybe it's me and I just don't care enough about clothes to be on S&B!

Sandalwoodrose · 26/06/2024 16:57

Phase Eight do good party wear. As you are tall, you should look amazing in a maxi dress and they are perfect for summer.

How about the Venetia Pleat Maxi dress, the Artemis Abstract Maxi dress or if you were absolutely going to go for it, the Becka Fringe Maxi dress? Smile

(sorry can't do links)

WhatNext24 · 26/06/2024 20:27

How about this dress OP:

YouSayChorizoIsayChorizo · 26/06/2024 21:18

I like a lot of the COS, Plumo, Danish-architecty suggestions on here. I'm tempted by this kind of look myself - cool-girl for the over 60s!! - but then I think it's a lot to live up to. Because it's not just about the clothes is it, there's the cool hair, expensively unusual jewellery and shoes, and attitude to match.

That's when I remember my reality is more Seasalt😬

Anyway, for what it's worth I think Me+Em stuff says 'interesting' without needing too much in the way of directional accessorizing. (A bit spenny for me though, and their sale seems to be mostly Christmas leftovers.)

Or how about a linen waistcoat and wideleg trousers? If you google 'linen waistcoat co ord' there seem to be a lot around.

Have fun whatever!

Ooh, I had a late-night thought and couldn't resist nipping back to suggest Kemi Telford. If you fancy a big dramatic skirt or a bit of colour OP, lots to choose from here! And cotton will be lovely and cool in the garden.

Very much loving all the architectural lines here! Now for something completely different - lush maximalism. All Selkie, prices are £200-£300.

Omg you are all amazing - so many fab suggestions here! Several I’m aware of but hadn’t thought about (ie: Plumo) and lots I’ve never heard of. Listen we are all different shapes and sizes and with different styles, but these ideas have really given me some good food for thought. I’m going to order in a few pieces to try on (fwiw I really love the idea of the denim maxi co-ord, but fear it’s going to make me look the size of a house, but who knows… I can try it). @YouSayChorizoIsayChorizo i do love a linen wide leg trouser co- ord, so will take a look at some of those, (there was one on Cos I highlighted and loved) but they are a bit my comfort zone (though nowt wrong with that either I suppose). @WhatNext24 that Roksanda dress is epic!

In the meantime, I’m also contemplating a design for my tattoo! (Not kidding….will be tiny 😂)

Just saw Jo Whiley (58) closing the BBC Pyramid stage coverage at Glastonbury - and thought of you, @Karmagician.

Gorgeous co-ord set; someone else will know where it’s from:

Thanks @CountryCousin. I agree it’s totally gorgeous! I certainly wouldn’t risk the shorts as not very proud of my legs above the knee (looks fab on Jo!) but the trousers are a great option. Probably getting too late to order as event is on Saturday, but I will check. In the meantime, I’ve ordered the Cos co-ord and the culottes, but also fear they may not arrive in time (as it says up to 7 working days) so picked up a couple of items yesterday in John Lewis (fab pair of cropped, high waisted wide leg trousers & lemon linen shirt from Mint Velvet plus another top from Rok & So), so I have some options and can return anything I decide not to wear. Thanks so much for all your help! x

Why change your style of clothing because you are turning 60? Wear clothes that suit your figure & your personality. Have a wonderful birthday

CountryCousin · 01/07/2024 11:32

Wear clothes that suit your figure & your personality.

If that was all the OP wanted there would be no point in starting a thread about it, surely? She can do that perfectly well without the input of interested Internet strangers. Presumably she’s looking for ideas that do prompt or signify some ‘change’ - because change makes life exciting?

As an 'interested Internet stranger' country cousin I looked back to see if you had given the OP a suggestion & found you had posted 2 links for a blouse & trousers. It only goes to prove there are style changes we could make that would definitely make life dull & boring 🤦‍♀️🤣

CountryCousin · 01/07/2024 14:12

This is my eleventh post on this thread … 😂
But I concede your contributions are far more thrilling, @Starrynights9.

CountryCousin · 01/07/2024 14:15

Glad you’re making progress, @Karmagician.

WhatsForDinner100 · 01/07/2024 17:54

Sosandar has plenty of outfits at a reasonable price.

Zara always looks stylish too.

I love Reiss, but it's quite pricey https://www.reiss.com/shop/gender-women-category-dresses/occasion-occasionwear?p=1#774.6666870117188

I was 60 last autumn.

Apileofballyhoo · 01/07/2024 18:06

Those shirts are gorgeous, OP, especially love the yellow one.

Mollyplop999 · 01/07/2024 19:16

Garlicker omg I love these! I'm having a 60th Birthday party in October. I'd love to be brave enough to wear one but at 5 ft 2 I'm not sure I'd dare

virginpinkmartini · 01/07/2024 23:24

Would you be able to reference a celeb/ public figure with a similar body type to yours?

virginpinkmartini · 01/07/2024 23:27

Also, what sort of colouring do you have i.e hair and skin, and what kind of makeup do you think you'll opt for

Panienka · 02/07/2024 03:10

I’m 62. I’m size 16-18. I’m tall with big bones. Anyway I digress. Tesco sell some lovely stuff, especially for warm weather. I’m on a strict budget, otherwise I would be buying. You have to go in-store as they don’t sell online. They also sell good quality exercise gear.

Tu (Sainsbury’s) is good too and have a sale on right now (online), with some lovely dresses.

Marks & Spencer I love for quality, good sizing and choice of lengths.

I also look in charity shops, and bought my mum a lovely lilac gilet and myself a leather bag which looked unused. My daughter looks online and buys nearly new on V… and finds lots of nice clothing. She even found me a pair of M&S bootcut jeans for £4 - brand new with the label on! My size and length. I was obviously meant to have them.

Good luck in your search!
