Vit C serum - argh!

TheWayOfTheWorld · 21/06/2024 09:56

It doesn't seem to matter what I use it always oxidises and

  • leaves a fake tan smell
  • goes orange

Latest culprit is the La Roche Posay one - I complimented someone on her skin and she told me that's the one she uses. So off I trotted to Boots to get some, and it's the same old story.

Hmm

Am I just doomed to not be able to use Vit C??

I use an Emma Hardie one that is delightful. Smells amazing.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 21/06/2024 11:01

@hopeishere have you had similar issues with other Vit C serums and have now found the one? Or is the first one you've used?

I had a sample of a Sunday Riley one that was nice and also seem to remember a nice one from Simple. Most of them are drying on me and feel tacky.

I use this one...and keep it in the fridge.

DavidRosesEyebrows · 21/06/2024 11:30

The temple spa one is lovely and doesn't have either of those issues.

innerdesign · 21/06/2024 11:31

The Biossance Squalane and Vitamin C Rose oil is gorgeous. Bit pricey though.

ThePoshUns · 21/06/2024 11:41

I use Q+A bit c serum have never had this issue

I use Medik8 C Tetra. I've had several bottles now and none have ever oxidised or made my skin go orange.

GerbilsForever24 · 21/06/2024 14:08

Where are you storing it? Isn't vitamin C one of those ones you're supposed to be careful with and definitely not on a bright windowsill?

I love vitamin C. The Murad one is really good but I find I don't like the smell. It's also very pricey but does last well- I actually used to buy the travel size as the big one was so big I wasn't convinced I could use it all up before it went off. I do still use the Murad vitamin C face cleanser when I want a foaming/shower cleanser as it's so great (also expensive but I don't use it every day so it's fine).

I have actually switched over the last year or so to two The Ordinary ones by preference and I love that they're so much cheaper too. The 30% in silicon and the 23%. The 23% one has a slightly exfoliating feel to it so I use it at night most usually (although I'm currently introducing retinol so it's on nights I'm not using retinol or I use it in the mornings sometiems). The 30% silicon one I love in the morning because it gives me skin a fabulous smooth finish. Almost like a primer, even after I put on moisteriser and SPF.

Another vote for Sunday Riley.

CelesteCunningham · 21/06/2024 14:40

I liked the Vichy one, but keep it in its box in a drawer.

ASighMadeOfStone · 21/06/2024 22:34

Recently I've used the Sali Hughes and not had a problem, and just started the Geek and Gorgeous (which is supposed to be a dupe of the ££££££ Skinceuticals) and am keeping it in the fridge as recommended.

I think Vitamin C is volatile and prone to oxidising tbh.

I used to love the Vichy one (@CelesteCunningham you seem to be my not so evil twin on so many things 😂) but I dud find that oxidised quite quickly.

CelesteCunningham · 21/06/2024 23:01

Lol @ASighMadeOfStone just saw your name pop up in my alerts and was surprised about the thread. Grin

I'll add I tried the Boots Ingredients one and it was useless, did nothing for me at all.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 22/06/2024 08:38

Hhm, I don't leave it out in bright light but o don't store it in the dark either. But this happens from the very first application out of the box.

Maybe I'm just not meant to use Vit C Grin

After having a horrendous reaction to a vit c serum which had a percentage of 30% Confused you might want to read this.

Sorry, pressed send too quickly.

Some Vit c formulas are better than others.

30% is high. You have to build up to that.

neveradullmoment99 · 22/06/2024 09:04

I use the inkey list. Never oxidises!

ASighWasMadeOfStone · 22/06/2024 14:20

The sweet spot for vitamin C is between 12 and 20%.
I think one of the many I've tried in the past was 23% but I tend to stick at around 15.
L-ascorbic is the "best" ingredient to look for.

I've tried:
Vichy LiftActiv-loved
The Ordinary - hated and threw away
Timeless- strange oily texture
Garden of Wisdom - strange oily texture
Boots N7 - ok
La Roche Posay - gloopy and slimy
Sali Hughes- sort of a watery oil, will repurchase if I don't get on with the G&G I've just started.

(Didn't realise I'd tried so many until I listed them 😂)

It is true though that some people are sensitive to vitamin C and should maybe build up by trying one of the generic serums from companies like Garnier or Olay that have a smaller percentage of active ingredient.

CelesteCunningham · 22/06/2024 14:22

I've recently started using an AHA toner (the ren one from the m&s beauty bag) in the morning, and use retinol at night. Does anyone know if adding vitamin C in the morning would be too much? I'm clueless at all this skincare stuff. I've gotten (Wink) on well with various vit c serums before but not sure if the toner changes things.

ASighWasMadeOfStone · 22/06/2024 14:48

😂
I'd use an acid toner at night, on a non retinol evening and the vitamin C in the morning. I'm not sure there's a firm reason not to use both together but I keep to one in the morning and one at night. I use retinal now at night, and then a couple of times a week, I skip that and use an acid toner. Vit C is more effective in the morning for it's anti-oxidant properties.
I'm using the Sali Hughes Placid at the moment, which is a combination of 5 different acids but at a low % I think.

IDontHateRainbows · 22/06/2024 15:35

This is the one skincare item I rate above all others
I've had good results from Medik8 c tetra and sunday riley

Naturism is a good slightly cheaper option

Never had the go orange issue

IDontHateRainbows · 22/06/2024 15:37

Naturism? Naturium!

Don't say that 😭

I do have a sample size of the Medik8, maybe I will try that...

I have the Sunday Riley serum and face oil. Really like the texture of the serum not sure on any results yet as I have only been using it a few weeks but no orange.
Just a thought you don't have some tanning drops with vitamin C in?
