Ultrasun face always worked for me

I'm rarely out in the sun now for long and I use cosrx aloe vera sunscreen and I do find that it's good and I haven't got even a hint of a tan but I haven't tested it as much as ultrasun which I would have tested on beach days etc.

Garnier ambre solaire facial Factor 50 on first then carry a can of the ambre solaire factor 50 “over make up” to top up with hourly. Used this combo in Central America, south east Asia, Middle East and wind up staying pale enough to need fake tan.
They have a couple of new facial ones with hyaluronic acid etc in which are reputedly better under make up than the original “super UV” one I’ve been using. Have heard some very good things about Dermalogica for the same purpose.

W0tnow · 19/06/2024 02:54

Dr Sam. Only one that doesn’t sting eyes.

myladybelle · 19/06/2024 04:04

You need to use sunscreens made with zinc, not the other kinds, to prevent hyper pigmentation.

Whiskeywithoutice · 19/06/2024 04:57

I've used La Roche Posay and Nivea Nivea UV Face Shine Control. Both are factor 50. How factor 50 works is that it increases your burn/brown time. Being a pasty white Celt my burn time in sun might be something like 8 minutes - assuming not a 30 degrees plus scorcher. So a factor 50 would give me something like 400 minutes which rounds down to about 6 hours. That is assuming perfect application and that you didn't sweat if off. Most people don't apply enough and it is fairly unpleasant to rub it into your hairline or parting and there is going to be a certain amount of sweating or taking it off your lips with eating and drinking so need to reapply there. Even if put another layer on after hours of sun exposure, you have had your maximum burn/brown time and from then on you will burn/brown. You mention menopausal sweaty heat so I suspect you're sweating some of it off.

A layer of make up can help increase over but you would probably sweat that off too.

I think even menopausal sweaty head could cope with a light straw hat with fairly opaque brim. I don't know any other way to avoid the sunspots and freckles that pop up when I am in the sun. I was reluctant to wear a hat but having a dermatopathologist carefully and painstakingly excising a second skin cancer round my hairline and equally painstakingly explain to me that to preserve the position of my eyebrow and hairline they were going to have to rotate a flap of skin was the encouragement I needed. A whole day and a lot of money had to be devoted to the procedure - it is a MOHs procedure and the advantage is that they take minimum skin to get to clear edges and the wound is left open while they are checking the bit excised has clear edges. A plastic surgeon had to revise one of the scars. The result was incredibly good in the end but I don't want a third go round.

Not complete block but spf50.

Aldi's own range is really good. But nothing will stop the sun completely. Wear sunglasses and a hat every time you go out if you want to protect your face as much as possible

Peclet · 19/06/2024 07:59

Seems like ultra sun is coming out Asa top recommendation.

Thank you all for taking the time to post your stories. I’m off to a big boots this weekend to see what they have and potentially test the scent and texture. In testing point out needing it to be zinc based for Pigmentation protection.

honestly. This has. Een such an education.

Melanoma UK recommends Altruist. The make a facial sunscreen factor 50

ClaudiaWinklepanda · 19/06/2024 08:14

Another vote here for Ultra-Violette.

Droolylabradors · 19/06/2024 10:04

Yes to ultrasun, but also we find sunsense works great and I use the cerave 50 which is thick and leaves a good white caste.

Stay well away from altruist. I ended up with itchy cheeks and spots.

ronswansonstache · 19/06/2024 11:03

I got a sample of this Murad product in an advent calendar and I LOVE it!

It is very pricy imo but you can get cheaper samples on Vinted.

Feels lovely on the skin and doesn't sting the eyes.

Everybody is different. I’m not keen on Ultrasun but Altruist is great for my sensitive skin and eyes. Heliocare is terrible for my eyes but I wouldn’t just tell people to stay away from it!

I also love Ultra Violette but it’s quite £££.

I actively avoid sun products that leave a white cast.

Heliocare spf 50 oil free is my amazing go to

Shessweetbutapsycho · 19/06/2024 11:16

You should be using a quarter of a teaspoon just for the face. This is more than you realise! (use a measuring spoon from a baking set and measure out your spf using this as a guide!) The Ultra Violette Fave Fluid is extremely lightweight and absorbs well. Doesn’t leave a white cast or sting eyes.

I don't mind a white film on my body, but don't want it in my face. The Avène I use is invisible on facial skin.

strugglemama · 19/06/2024 12:05

The problem is not what you use but how much. A 50p blob is nowhere near enough. You need at least 2 finger lengths of sun cream for your face to achieve the SPF stated on the bottle. Yes it is a lot. Yes it is difficult to rub it in. Yes it will probably look oily and sticky. But you will not tan or burn if you use the required amount and reapply every 2h (yes, this much every 2h).

MrsSlocombesCat · 19/06/2024 12:51

Aldi do one and it's really cheap. I just use Maybelline Urban Dream foundation as it has Factor 50.

It's not greasy at all.

Ultra Violette doesn’t leave a white cast (as suggested by quoted post). In fact, I always get told I look well when I wear it. It’s very glowy.

ShazzaF · 19/06/2024 14:26

I am a big big fan of Ultrasun SPF50! It's never let me down yet.

FakeMiddleton · 19/06/2024 14:28

Colorscience.

It's expensive but NOTHING is getting through that. I did Middle East, UV12 for a week and... nothing got through that sucker.

Abitorangelooking · 19/06/2024 14:30

I wear murad 30 spf as a base layer then primer and a bb cream then I spritz away with bondi beach spf 50 for the face. Redo regularly it’s fine over make up.

JamSlags · 19/06/2024 14:34

I use Garnier Vitamin C Daily UV Invisible Brightening Fluid SPF 50. Also like the Glow version which turns slightly tinted, although as I am v v pale it’s a bit too much colour for me so I use that one if I’m adding blusher and lipstick.

Neither irritate my eyes, leave a white cast or cause breakouts.

RueTroussevache · 20/06/2024 14:04

I like this one. I think it's Spanish, but I get it on Vinted.
