What should I do with my skinny jeans?

MistressOfCopperMountain · 15/06/2024 21:57

Got 2 good pairs, nothing wrong with either, white and blue, from Marks (Autograph and Magic). Feels like a waste to get rid of them, even to donate, but as well as being off trend, they feel so uncomfortable now that I am used to straight styles. The only scenario I can see them being worn is with wellies in winter but even then I would probably crave thermal leggins. What have you done with yours?

Skinny jeans rarely look good on anyone. Having worn them for years (and I say this as a UK size 10 with toned legs) they are very unforgiving and thank god they are now out of fashion.

You could keep them ‘in case’ they come back into fashion - but who has the room to keep unworn clothes for what could be 10 or so years (and by then, won’t you want to treat yourself to a shiny new pair)?

I’ve thinned out my skinny jeans from 5 pairs down to 1. I only wear skinny jeans now with knee high boots or a heavy ankle boot.

YorkNew · 16/06/2024 21:35

I still wear mine as my bum looks so good in them.
How about making one pair into a pair of shorts?

That’s a very bizarre thing to say…
skinny jeans can be VERY flattering and look great on a lot of people.. me being one of them 🤣

Huh?

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 16/06/2024 22:17

skinny jeans are flattering on women who’s legs are their best asset, the thigh gap ladies. If you have fabulous legs then they are probably the most flattering style, particularly if you suit the baggy tops that balance out skinnies. (Apples look good in skinnies, show off the legs, drape the top half in fabric, give the impression it’s all just as shapely as the legs under the shapeless top.)

For everyone else, we just got used to the parsnip leg look.

Keep them til they come back in fashion….im 59 and and back wearing miss sixty flared jeans I had from the 90s

Love that!
I've just ordered my first pair of flares, since the 90s that is. Tried on some of my skinnies the other day and my god I couldn't get them back off quick enough. So uncomfortable

Have you been to specsavers lately??

for those of us who are vertically challenged , they are a godsend, they give us length thats not there, we can wear a multitude of tops and still be defined

When I started wearing jeans, way back in the 70's, there was no elastine or lycra , you bought jeans and then went home and sat in a bath to shrink to fit

Gloria Vandebilt and Calvin Klein were the first designers to realise women were a different shape to men and started to design jeans for women, but they were out of the reach for most of us, so we had to go try on 50 pairs of Levis to get the best fit, and go home and soak in the bath

Ive gone through flares, two tone baggies, drainpipes, straights, kick flares , straight legged, moms ( which I feel are the jeans I started wearing - shapeless ) and skinnies and for me skinnies every day

Even now aged 59, I pull on my skinnies. Size eight and they show a waist, lift my non exsistant arse and stop me looking top heavy ( I have a midriff ) or just a complete block and show off my perfectly formed legs - cos i dont have thunder thighs or fat calves

And I wear them with knee highs ankle, trainer, flip lops, loafers, mules

As for back in fashion, Im sure Vogue ( if you are at all interested ) announced they were way back in March, I certainly remember radio presenters celebrating the news

uncomfortablydumb53 · 18/06/2024 16:36

Personally i love my skinny jeans as they're the best style for my short petite frame.
If you've never liked wearing them, donate.
If you might wear them with boots in winter, could you bag and store on top of your wardrobe or something? It's only 2 pairs

uncomfortablydumb53 · 18/06/2024 16:38

Second every word of the post above, and I'm also 59!

What a load of tosh, tons of people look absolutely great in skinny jeans

AuntieStella · 18/06/2024 16:58

I would wear them.

They're a classic cut and you see people wearing them everywhere.

The "death of the skinnies" theme has been an annual event for at least a decade, but it's usually pushed by an industry that is invested in the continual purchase cycle of fashion.

You thought you looked good in them when you bought them. What's changed?

Remember that legs are meant to taper - adding fabric below the knee makes the silhouette look sturdier (unless exceptionally willowy of thigh). Those who want you to stop wearing perfectly serviceable, good looking clothes might want to persuade you to chase a new fashion and spend more.

But remember that this section is Style (and beauty), not fashion. What do you see as stylish? If it's changed since you bought them, why?

Lorrymum · 18/06/2024 17:02

According to an article in Elle magazine they are coming back this autumn.

Shufflebumnessie · 18/06/2024 17:06

I still wear mine as I look awful in pretty much any other style
You could donate or sell on Vinted?

😁 I totally agree and I fall in to the ‘everyone else’ look.

Divebar2021 · 18/06/2024 17:17

Skinny jeans are most certainly not classic…. They were ubiquitous for a long time but certainly aren’t classic. Nick Kamen didn’t peel off a pair of skinny jeans in the laundrette back in the day. A slim or straight jean would be a classic cut…. Not that many people are classic dressers nowadays.

Brightandbubly · 18/06/2024 17:18

If they’re “not in” why are they still being sold in most shops?

user1984778379202 · 18/06/2024 17:19

According to Vogue they are making a comeback this A/W - thank god! I really hope M&S revive the Carrie ones.

I'm laughing nicely at people who thought they had wide jeans in the 1990s 😂 If you didn't have them in the first half of the 1970s you don't know what bell bottoms and all the other names for them are 😂. My Dad thought I ran on wheels 😂 I occasionally try on a pair now and think omg wtf is it with all this flapping material !

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 18/06/2024 17:56

Shops are still full of skinny jeans so no chance they are out of fashion!

I love them, I have great legs but a podgy belly and the high waist skinnies hide the belly but make my legs look great.

Divebar2021 · 18/06/2024 18:37

I haven’t seen skinny jeans being worn by anyone who looked particularly stylish for a long time. However I was in Shoreditch recently and my god it was so dull…. Exactly the same variation of outfit being churned out. ( gazelles, Sambas, retro sports socks yada yada yada) No one really stood out as interesting and I include myself in that. So I’m personally going to work to find what I want to wear away from the trend…( which I actually find quite difficult). I think the OP should probably consider the fact she finds the jeans uncomfortable and get rid. No trend is really worth discomfort.

Classic = dull in my book. Can live without it tbh

Divebar2021 · 18/06/2024 20:46

Yeah I’m not classic either. I think if someone has something that they feel great in then they should stick with that.

PyongyangKipperbang · 18/06/2024 21:12

I wear mine and dont give a toss about whats on or off trend. I wear what I know looks good on me.

AhBiscuits · 18/06/2024 21:15

I've packed mine away but I think I'll probably donate them. I can't see me wearing them again.
