Scalp & eyes driving me crazy! Sensitive shampoo & conditioner recommations needed

Hi all,

I am clawing my eyes out today, as I have been on & off for months. And clawing at my scalp. I have very sensitive skin, and have always had to be super careful with what I use on my face, body & hair. Face is fine & body too, but my scalp has gone into overdrive these past 12 months, and nothing I've used in the past is working.

I've tried SO many- cheap to expensive & nothing is working. Organic/ free from everything/ plant-based- you name it, I'm clawing. My eyes are weeping & constantly look as if I've been crying.

Andrew Barton Kind & Gentle worked well for ages, but it's discontinued.

I use an organic hairdresser & he ordered a set for me at £50, but I still itched like crazy & he refunded it.

Please give me your suggestions as I'm going out of my mind. Fine hair, but lots of it, & good condition.

TIA

Rather than wasting more money on expensive products, go to your GP and get a referral to a dermatologist. It may take some time but at least you'll get a proper diagnosis.

FriedAir · 10/06/2024 18:00

Yes see if you can get a referral for patch testing if you think it's an allergy. Then you'll know which ingredients to avoid.

But also see your GP in case it's not an allergy but another skin condition eg. Psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis.

I used aveeno shampoo and this has really helped with my scalp and eyes, this was recommended by a dermatologist. But they also prescribed protopic cream and steroid lotion to calm down the itching and redness.

Puffalicious · 10/06/2024 18:12

Thank you both. I have an excellent GP, so will enquire.

I used to use Aveeno shampoo, the original one, but can't seem to find it now they've launched the new range- think there are 3 or 4 for specific hair types- I tried one & itching like mad. I was also told Body Shop Ginger range has changed people's lives- was so hopeful, but nope, itching.

I will email my GP- I'm already on strong antihistamines- but in the meantime, any more suggestions? I saw a Finnish brand online, but with postage it's over £40 for both & I'm not willing to keep spending a fortune. Even places that sell small/ sample sizes would be better.

Moogoo?

buffyslayer · 10/06/2024 18:23

Spotted this brand the other week too

Puffalicious · 10/06/2024 18:46

Tried Moo Goo last year. This is the brand I was referring to that I'd found. Would be £42 for both, and when you look in the small-print an unstated extra postage amount to Scotland! I'm in a major city, so not exactly the islands! That put me off too! But I'll consider it.

Faith in nature and Sukin are the other two I can think of
Noughty does a range called care taker

Co wash but not cheap

Philip Kingsley Itchy Flaky Scalp or No Scent No Colour Gentle range.

John Lewis sell it.

Or Redken Scalp Relief Soothing Balance shampoo.

I prefer the Philip Kingsley but have used both.

sunflowerfan · 10/06/2024 18:57

This has stopped the itching, but not the flaking on my scalp (psoriasis).

Why don't you try a baby wash? I used Johnson's top to toe baby wash on my DD because her skin was so sensitive.
Weleda calendula range are good too.

Also have used a gentle bar soap on her to wash her body, something like unperfumed goats milk soap.
You could try a natural shampoo bar too.

Definitely go SLS free, that stops my scalp itching.

Tried Faith in Nature; Sukin & Noughty- all made me itch.

The linked one is expensive but worth a look. Thank you.

Again pricey, but I'll check it out. Thank you.

Johnson's baby shampoo is one of the worst I've tried, actually 🙈. But I'll look for Weleda.I've tried all sorts of shampoo bars to no avail.

Moo goo is goat's milk, is it not? But I'll definitely check for more goat's milk products. Thank you.

E45 shampoo has been a game changer for me 👍

I leapt on it when I discovered it, it worked for a few weeks then I flared again- it's like my scalp has enough after a build up. Maybe I'll try it again?

I like their soaps, so might be a shout. I wonder if in shop they do a smaller trial size. We have a store in town that I'll check out. Thank you.

Haven't tried it myself but Garnier Ultimate Blends Oat Milk Sensitive Scalp Shampoo is a cheaper one to try if not already.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 11/06/2024 01:02

L'Occitane do 75ml travel size bottles in a lot of their ranges for approx £7 - £8.
Hope you find something suitable.

I've used it before, it is gentle but quite scented so I guess it depends what's causing the irritation

buffyslayer · 11/06/2024 01:04

Stupid question but if you "wash" your hair with just conditioner, does it still get irritated? Just wondering if it's the foaming agents

I think I've tried it, but not sure- I'll.check the packaging & see if it sparks a memory.

Not stupid at all. Strangely it's been conditioner that's the issue more than shampoo.at times
. I've tried just doing the ends/ spray in ones etc, but having no joy.

My sister recently suggested it may be hormonal- I'm peri-meno, heading to menopause 🤔
