Are these bad highlights, and if so, why?

I think they are bad, my hairdresser doesn’t and has basically told me to go find someone else. If they are bad, what is making them bad, as in technically - too close to the root? Too thick? Too uniform? These photos are from the day they were done. I wanted really fine barely there beachy highlights. Just want to try and communicate better with my next hairdresser. Thanks.

Well, they are fine and barely there! Possibly too uniform from the photo. They don’t look bad, though.

Surely if you think they are bad you know why you think that?

Yes of course I do - I was after other opinions to see if they were the same as mine or whether, like the hairdresser, everyone thinks they are ok.

They are stripey. If you go somewhere else take a picture of what you want

JeepJeepJeep · 08/06/2024 16:14

Babylights are highlights which are very finely woven.

Maybe that is what you need to ask for.
Otherwise fine highlights in two shades, rather than one.

Thanks everyone

They are a bit stripey & I had a similar problem with some big gaps of uncoloured hair near the hairline.
Having said that, they do look ok but if you're unhappy or you've lost trust in your hairdressers, I'd go somewhere else & ask for very fine, natural looking highlights.

Gettingonabitnow · 08/06/2024 16:45

thanks. Not sure whether to grow it out and then start again- my brain can’t work out how you’d do thinner highlights on top of the stripey!

Two different colours of highlights may suit suit you more.

Sunnyandsilly · 08/06/2024 16:48

They look lovely, very well done.

From a non-professional view point it looks like when she picked up sections to weave the hair with a tail comb she didn't weave it very finely which is why you have a wider stripe. They are just a teeny bit thicker than perhaps they should be and yes you can narrow down a bleached section like that, they just pick up that bleached section, weave some hairs out to keep, put those over your head, and take the left over section and apply colour and wrap it in foil.

I had a full head of highlights yesterday, the next time I go she will just do roots, then the 3rd visit will be roots plus halo. With the halo she will pick back up the highlighted sections on the top of my hair and bleach those to cover the regrowth. Meaning the same strands of hair are bleached for continuity.

As I said, I am not a hairdresser but watch a lot of professional hairdressers do highlights etc on youtube and my own hairdresser is amazing at making my 75% grey hair look like it did when I was 20.

This shows you what I mean by weaving the section and how they determine which hair strands get hightlighted

I think highlights are always going to contrast when you have dark roots. I don't think they look bad. Balayage is probably more suitable for you next time.

ShadesofPoachedSmoke · 08/06/2024 18:06

It's giving me 90's stripey blocky vibes. Very All Saints.

They are just too wide and regular.

Sorry I can't help with what you need to ask for but I would always take a photo for inspo if you're not sure how to describe the look you want.

JimNast · 08/06/2024 18:37

I think she's done a good job in that the highlights are close to the roots, but you don't like them, and it's your hair.

Beautiful3 · 08/06/2024 18:54

I actually think it's fine, and I like it.

RosesAndHellebores · 08/06/2024 18:58

I think they are a bit dated. A toner would help and next time a few in a different shade would be good to tone it down, a bit.

They aren't badly executed though.

scrapsontheside · 08/06/2024 20:16

They are quite 90s in the stripiness (apologies if that's rude) and quite "bright" compared to your natural hair so look pretty obvious, not subtle .
Could you get a toner put on?

Thanks. No not rude at all, I agree. I think you’ve actually hit the nail on the head too in that they do look really light don’t they, like white blonde.

They’re stripey and too thick, the more distant picture shows chunky blind/brown stripes.

nzeire · 09/06/2024 10:43

stripy highlights are all over love island!

soz!

IDontHateRainbows · 09/06/2024 10:45

Stripes like that went out in the 90s

You need to go somewhere that does more of a blended look

VibeOnWithMyGalPals · 09/06/2024 10:48

I think they’re fine. I’d just loosen them up a bit with your fingers or a brush

Gettingonabitnow · 09/06/2024 13:29

Thanks everyone it’s helpful to hear

What did you ask for and what did they show you first?

My hairdresser shows me the colour chart to choose the shade.
Sometimes one, sometimes 50-50 of a lighter and darker.

They should ask if you want chunky or thin highlights.

Did you ask for light blonde?

I can't see your natural colour very well but from what I can see, I think you should consider lowlights in more gold/coppery tones depending on what you want.

Thanks. Yes I showed her this - which actually my own hair from about 10 years ago! I’ve cropped my face out obviously but you get the feel hopefully of what I wanted. I used to have it coloured by a stylist I adored, but she moved away. I then hadn’t had it coloured for about 8 years, so the hairdresser had a blank canvas. I asked for barely there highlights, really subtle. I’ve now got this full head of blonde! New hairdresser used bleach, no other colour.

Are these bad highlights, and if so, why?
