Talk to me about eyeshadows and swapping to cheaper ones

Okay- I can afford high end but as the prices are going up and up, wondering if I can the same for less.

I've used Bobbi Brown eye shadows for years and still have them in Cement and Stone (powders.) But most of their powder shadows are discontinued and cream sticks are the replacement- many are nude shades or pink which don't suit me.
I have just run out of the cream stick in Stone ( a greyish beige.)

I can't bring myself to pay almost £30 for one (although I wait for a discount.)

In the past when I've bought cheaper brands I've chucked them away as they are too glittery, or have no pigment and staying power. I've read negative things about Revolution (safety of ingredients so that's a no-no.)

I was looking recently at Boots No 7 eye shadow stick but wondered if anyone has used the new Clinique shadow stick (powder shadow one end and liner the other.)

Or should I just bite the bullet and buy a 5-shade Dior palette which I did once and loved it.

I find eyeshadow lasts me so long there's no point economising on it. IMO you may as well get the Dior palette that you'll love and use.

It's years since I bought the Dior but it lasted for well over 6 months.

Kiko do great eyeshadow sticks at less than £10 each I believe so worth checking out. They also have a pretty extensive selection of powder eyeshadows too.

CocoapuffPuff · 07/06/2024 13:00

Eyeshadow lasts so long that I go with the ones I really really love and think of it as cost per wear. Buy the Dior palette.

CorneliaStreet · 07/06/2024 13:27

The best cheaper eyeshadows I’ve tried are the Beauty Bay palettes - lots of different colour and size options too.

Deargodletitgo · 07/06/2024 13:30

I go by reviews not price tag, paying for a high end brand doesn't equal quality.

protectthesmallones · 07/06/2024 13:52

Try searching unused & new products on eBay. If you know the brand and colour. Lots of unwanted gifts are sold, so are duplicated items.

Reviews are very subjective however aren't they?

I've read reviews here and often find my own experience is very different - either better or worse.

I don't have any suggestions but Shock at Revolution make up. I've just searched as it's my DD's eyeshadow & blusher brand (very very rarely used). So following with interest & wondering which brands are safer

ASighMadeOfStone · 07/06/2024 14:29

The Kiko and Avon cream sticks are great and just as good as Bobbi Brown imo.
Elf cream pots of shadow are apparently a dupe of Mac Paint Pots and when my one runs out I intend to try.

HolidayAtNight · 07/06/2024 15:02

Boots No 7 powder ones are great - haven't tried the sticks.

AppleStrudel23 · 07/06/2024 15:18

I personally think spending more on eyeshadow is better because it's more pigmented and lasts longer on and in the pot. My cheap eyeshadow never makes me feel good. I have been using one colour of Hourglass Scattered Light glitter eyeshadow for 10 months now for on average 2 -3 times a week and I've barely made a dent

Northernlass99 · 07/06/2024 15:23

I saw Elf recommended by Sali Hughes and bought a brown one. I love it and it lasts really well. Cream consistency in a pot.

allmycats · 07/06/2024 15:41

If you like the cream sticks I can recommend Mally on QVC. Great pigment and staying power. You can get singles but a set of 3 or 5 is brilliant value. Also if you don’t like them you can send them back even after using them.

Deargodletitgo · 07/06/2024 15:49

The Elf cream pots are great, and great staying power.

Reviews can be subjective, but ingredients are ingredients.

Exactly. Posh ranged often just have higher mark ups..

I bought a No7 powder eye palette in the Boots £10 Tuesday and it's been great!

Oh no! I love revolution...what's wrong with it?!

gingersnappz · 07/06/2024 20:48

I love revolution too!

Currently using a couple of Boots 17 eyeshadows which are £2.50 and last all day.

Current bugbear is so many now you can only buy in palettes which I only use 3/4 colours of so it seems such a waste.

Springwatch123 · 07/06/2024 20:49

Avon eyeshadows are good.

FletchingStraight · 07/06/2024 20:54

@MissAtomicBomb1 this explains www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-64192516 although they are sorting it out over time! I hadn't realised so am put off the brand now. I use more natural mineral stuff myself but DD is just testing things out/playing around so didn't want to spend £££'s Feeling a bit guilty, at least she rarely wears & not for long

nobeans · 07/06/2024 22:26

Just a heads up dior have reformulated a lot of their products and I'm hearing they mean it with the little jar symbols that say 6 months now as they are "cleaner"

PrincessConsuelaBag · 07/06/2024 23:24

Elf do little 4 pot eyeshadow pallets, really good value for money. I tend to use affordable eyeshadows over high end, I haven’t noticed much of a difference!

I do tend to splurge on foundation though.

EleanorMc67 · 07/06/2024 23:57

I've been trying to spend less too. The Elf no budge shadow sticks - at £6!!!! - are brilliant. Better than the Bobbi Brown ones I have! Very slight shimmer but not OTT & the two I use as everyday neutrals are Magnetic Pull (a soft taupe) & Copper Chic (which isn't copper, it's a mid brown).

I love the Elf eyeshadow sticks for about a fiver, they do a nude one which works really well to just set your eyelid and eye liner
