Talk to me about eyeshadows and swapping to cheaper ones

Okay- I can afford high end but as the prices are going up and up, wondering if I can the same for less.

I've used Bobbi Brown eye shadows for years and still have them in Cement and Stone (powders.) But most of their powder shadows are discontinued and cream sticks are the replacement- many are nude shades or pink which don't suit me.
I have just run out of the cream stick in Stone ( a greyish beige.)

I can't bring myself to pay almost £30 for one (although I wait for a discount.)

In the past when I've bought cheaper brands I've chucked them away as they are too glittery, or have no pigment and staying power. I've read negative things about Revolution (safety of ingredients so that's a no-no.)

I was looking recently at Boots No 7 eye shadow stick but wondered if anyone has used the new Clinique shadow stick (powder shadow one end and liner the other.)

Or should I just bite the bullet and buy a 5-shade Dior palette which I did once and loved it.

I should probably be more fussed about it all than I am. I've been wearing cheap and cheerful makeup (think £2.99 eyeshadow pallet of no recognisable brand in the supermarket bargain aisle) for 30yrs and I'm not dead yet. If I apply it in the morning I apply it again at lunchtime in my break and evening before going out. It's really not a problem if it doesn't last all day.

I love the Elf eyeshadow sticks for about a fiver, they do a nude one which works really well to just set your eyelid and eye liner

this one

Barry M is excellent, and lasts just as well as anything else I’ve tried. I use their eyeshadow primer too.

I too used to think that eyeshadows lasted for years and years (and I absolutely should have known better cos I work with eyes!) but after a couple of very nasty eyelid infections I binned all my old ones and started again. Not worth the risk.

You might enjoy this palette. It’s not cheap, but very lovely quality and good for travel. It’s the Makeup By Mario Master Mattes Neutral Palette

@GingerbicciesPlease Get the Dior, I have 3 of the new Dior quints and I live them. The 6 months expiry is a load of rubbish, mine are already over 2 years old and there's absolutely nothing wrong with them. My favourite is New Look, whenever I wear it I get compliments. It's very pigmented so I go steady with it. I know Soft Cashmere has had rave reviews but at the time I bought mine it was out of stock.

That is fine if it works but I find nothing worse than no colour pay off and chalky chunky glitter. Some cheaper options are great but some are just shite. I'll probably get slatted but I find Urban Decay crap. Chunky glitter, dry, just horrible to work with and they cost £££.

I should say though that when I'm feeling more flush, Mac's Satin Taupe is my go-to neutral.

You could try loose mineral eyeshadow. Lasts an absolute age. I only apply one colour on my socket line and blend with a soft brush for shadow. I also use a dark one to line with a liner brush pressing into the root of my top lashes.

Lily Lolo is pretty affordable and also Barefaced Beauty. I buy online.

@Treepot

From what I read the problem with talc is potential contamination from asbestos.

Of course it is not legal to sell asbestos containing products in the UK! However how often companies are inspected by the regulators is another matter (inspection results are not published as far as I know).

But the thing is,other mined makeup ingredients, such as mica, can also be contaminated with asbestos or heavy metals. Synthetically produced chemical ingredients are not without problems either, many have potential to cross the skin barrier, be endocrine disrupters and cause skin sensitivity. Hence the need for regulation.

It is worth checking each brand's statement on their ingredients and how they are sourced.

Colourpop and morphe - both as good as Natasha Denona and Pat McGrath for me.

NoSnowdrop · 12/06/2024 13:38

Bobbi Brown was sold and no longer the same company or good products like they had in the 90s.

with the colours you’ve mentioned I’d invest firstly in an Urban Decay Naked 2 mini palette (around 25 quid). If you like it get the bigger version of it for around 45.

it has to be the naked 2 for the colours you like.

the colours are highly pigmented and go on really well and have good staying power. I find cheap eye shadows are a waste of money.

Also the Elf for pan palettes are amazingly and cheap as chips
