Honestly this isn’t a please feel sorry for me post 😂

I’ve had a really rough 3 years and it shows. Bereavement, numeral health problems, weight gain has me look rough as toast.

i just want to look a bit less like someone that’s a cast member if shameless (I’m not joking).

Ive already started a diet and already lost a couple of pounds. I have vitiligo and I’m completely depigmented now so I look like a ghost these days. Fake tan doesn’t really work but I’d like to try the drops.

any advice on nails? I can’t afford a salon so it would have to be a home thing.

ive just had my hair cut and I’ve dyed it myself, to get rid of all the greys.

my wardrobe is a nightmare, I find jeans uncomfortable so I just tend to wear walking trousers and a t shirt.

please help me 😂 thank you

I think just smelling nice helps and is inexpensive. Nice shower gel or soap and reasonably priced perfume from Next or M&S.

Honestly OP you sound like a lovely person who has had a really rough time.

Nothing 'ugly' about that.

I would just focus on your health: eat a balanced diet, sleep well and when/if you can slowly start getting more physical more active and enjoy life.

Wear clothes that make you feel good and confident and reflect your personality and lifestyle rather than following any trend.

I never understand the craze for fake tan, fake nails and relying too much on make up and fashion diktats. I really don't think that this approach makes anyone more attractive...

blackheartsgirl · 08/06/2024 12:07

I think with me having vitiligo and having very little skin pigment at all means it’s really dented my self confidence. Think albino white and you’ve got my skin tone. It has made my hair brilliant white in parts and it really looks odd. I just need something that’s going to even out my skin patches and a little fake tan does do that and then I don’t look so ill 😭. It’s unfortunately a medical condition, auto immune in fact. I’m not a huge fan on fake nail though, I can’t carry them off and they get on my nerves 😂.

im going to take the plunge and go for a balayage, my hair is a very dark brown and goodness me it looks awful against my skin tone now.

people that have said start with the inside and work on the outside gradually, love this and it’s so right.

Saying no to people is also a start, I am horribly put upon by people one of them being a friend of mine, bless her I do love her to be bits but she has awful problems at the moment, but some is of her own making and she has bad mental health and physical problems, she has been there for me so much and I have also been there for her lately, I’ve helped her move house, been there when she’s been in hospital and today she hinted for me to spend the day with her but I need today to potter round the house and do some
much needed cleaning and sorting and time to breath and I’m enjoying it so much, she’s gone a bit off with me. I am mentally drained with dealing with people all week in work and as dd2 is sleeping still (shes17 and had a late night) I’m making the most of it.

With dark hair and pale skin, you'll probably look best in jewel tones like sapphire, Berry and emerald. Try to wear something like these near your face. What colour are your eyes?

I don't know if its already been mentioned but there's a great group on Facebook called Style Me Happy Community. It's run by a lady called Emily who is a stylist and she offers different style, colour etc analysis but you don't have to have any of these services to be part of the group. It's a very supportive and positive group to get advice in.

Hi! You aren't ugly, don't use that word. Maybe you could use unpolished instead!

I also hateeee wearing jeans so I wear dresses with leggings in winter or dresses with shorts in summer.

For nails you can do them yourself, keep them oiled and shaped well and you could have fun learning to paint them! It took me ages to get halfway decent but it looks nice now.

I would also suggest little things like tinting your eyelashes and eyebrows. Also I think having a beautiful space is important because it changes how you feel and then you subconsciously act differently. And by beautiful it doesn't have to be expensive but clean and orderly with maybe some few little details.

Also maybe some nice perfume too and a nice beauty routine! That always makes me feel good

lavafield · 08/06/2024 12:55

You are not ugly! First thing first, remove such words about yourself from your vocabulary! Start reminding yourself daily that you are beautiful to build confidence until it starts to shine through. Look wise, hair cut/ no grey hair/ weight loss is a great starts. Neat eyebrows can completely change the face. Lip gloss and a bit of blush on cheeks. Agree with pp on a good moisturiser for face and body. Eating lots of veg and fruit and olive oil, and plenty of water and sleep will do the rest!

I’ve also had a difficult few years. Not as difficult as the OP and I’m finding this thread so useful.

I’ve just dyed my eye brows and my goodness what a difference. I usual have to use an eye brow pencil everyday and I think I can get away without doing it.

Thank you everyone.

This is so true. I forgot to mention brows. When I have let myself go, the first thing I do is go to Superdrug for a brow wax. Instantly knocks 5 years off you and makes you look groomed.

OP, one really good trick with exercise is to do it in tiny amounts. I do 20 high knees, 20 lateral high knee raises, 20 toe touch high kicks, 20 squats while the kettle boils. Then one of those each time I reheat the coffee I forgot to drink Grin. While my useless email system is loading I do a few press-ups. While our elderly TV loads Netflix or I-player I do some lunges. If I am waiting for a good TV programme to start while the last few minutes of something else is on, I do a few sit ups.

In the morning, first thing, out of bed, a few really good stretches. Same at night. Let everything stretch and unwind.

Over a week, that's a workout.

And walk all the short distances: to collect DC from school, to pick up bread and milk. If you ever use buses, check when one is due. If it's more than 5 mins, walk to the next stop. Waiting for a train, pace up and down the platform - you can add a couple of thousand steps to the daily count by doing this.

I even put things I use often on high shelves to get a good stretch a few times a day. Might sound a bit much but it's all part of a campaign against a too-sedentary lifestyle. Frequent short bursts of activity give you energy.

my eyes are dark brown.

So I'm no expert whatsoever but you do sound 'winter'. Have a quick Google for your colour palette. It really does brighten you up.
