Dress Help - Guest at Indian Wedding

NeedWineNow · 04/06/2024 13:11

Hi All

Would this dress be suitable as a guest to an Indian wedding in the late summer? We've been invited to arrive mid-morning and understand it will be going on until later in the evening.

I did look at various websites but I don't want to look as though I'm wearing fancy dress! We've got quite a long drive so wanted something comfortable for travelling as well. It comes in dark green or dark blue if this colour wouldn't be right.

That looks beautiful but not sure on the family but when my Muslim / Pakistani best friend got married a few years ago I wasn't sure what to wear and I sent her a load of dresses - some with no sleeves and she choose this one as it covers shoulders and sleeves! Obviously this may be okay with your friend but I'd double check just incase 🫶🏻

Looks lovely, if Indian then I would say it’s fine. If a Pakistani/muslim wedding then something more covered may be best.

Also, keep in mind it’s impossible to be overdressed at an Asian wedding so have fun with it, just avoid red!

CurlewKate · 04/06/2024 13:24

I would either check with whoever invited you or go more covered.

LovelyBitOfSquirrrel · 04/06/2024 13:24

As another suggestion if you would be interested in wearing an Asian dress have a look for a lehenga on vinted. It’s not complicated like a saree as it’s just essentially a skirt and a top with a fabric shawl so you won’t have any issues putting it on.

NeedWineNow · 04/06/2024 13:58

Thank you everyone. The groom is a work colleague of DH whom I've never met so I'll get him to check. I'll write him out a list specifics so that he knows what to ask!

So following on from my earlier post I've established that neither the groom or bride are Muslim/Pakistani so that frees up some options.

I have had another look online and found these - what do you all think?

Hello I'm Indian 🇮🇳 I would say last one is amazing! Indian weddings are all
About the glam so go all out!!!!

strawberryblue · 07/06/2024 10:52

Sorry meant to add... steer away from plain white (worn at funerals) or black (can be considered bad luck if family religious) xx

Agree! Also I tend to avoid red for some Hindu weddings because it’s often the bridal colour. That said, that’s more regional and there isn’t the strong “don’t wear bridal colour” rule in most Indian weddings like there is in English ones.

Sd352 · 07/06/2024 13:34

Don’t feel you need to wear an Indian outfit if you will never have another use for it! A long glam dress (like your first pick) would work well. I just think short dresses can look awkward at Indian weddings.

You could also look at renting an outfit. https://byrotation.com/designers/indian

I've been to 2 Hindu weddings, and the ladies were dressed in everything from western 'wedding guest' suits and dresses, to full saris etc. No-one cared a jot!

Busybeemumm · 07/06/2024 14:00

All your choices are great! Anything goes at Indian weddings but would avoid something above knee, black, white, red. You can't ever be over dressed!

Bignanna · 07/06/2024 14:00

I think the Freemans one is best. Special enough, but not over the top..

twentysevendresses · 07/06/2024 14:14

I have the Freemans dress...it is absolutely stunning! Much nicer in real life than the photos show. The gold thread is really delicate and the pink/green colours run together beautifully!

Saying that, all of your links are really lovely OP 👍

NeedWineNow · 07/06/2024 16:34

Thank you everyone. Have to admit that the first and last outfits in my post are my favourites, and I am leaning towards the Freemans dress as that is definitely my style. I thought that I might try and get a fine gauzy dupatta to go with the gold embroidery. I have gold beaded sandals and beaded bag and some fabulous earrings. It will be great to really dress up!

I went to a Hindu wedding in India a couple of years ago. From the tonne of research and did, and based on observing reactions on the day to the dress of some other western guests, this is what I found.

Boobs, legs and shoulders are covered. Baring your midriff and/or back is fine. Fitted is fine, tight/clinging is not. Wear massive jewellery.

Freemans dress is perfect esp if you have a dupatta. Have fun!

NeedWineNow · 07/06/2024 17:49

@whatifshejust Thank you, that's really helpful and accords with my research (and chatting to the Indian barmaid in our local!). I'm definitely ordering the Freemans dress.

I would play safe I think.Maybe wear something that covers your arms /shoulders .Have a lovely time ,a friend covers Indian weddings and they are a huge deal.

Busybeemumm · 08/06/2024 09:06

Great choice OP. I'm tempted by the lovely Freeman's dress myself, but no upcoming events to give it an outing! Have a great time 😊

BuggeryBumFlaps · 08/06/2024 09:11

Omg they are all gorgeous. So jealous, I'm fat and short but would soooooo love to wear those outfits

Elsbetka · 08/06/2024 09:16

I absolutely love the two Mirraw links, but actually all are beautiful! I do like the very first one too.

NeedWineNow · 08/06/2024 09:50

Decision made, Freemans dress ordered! It's something I can definitely wear again - we're cruising next year so I will be packing it for that trip. I'm very tempted to get the last outfit as well for our cruise but will park that for the moment (I should really try and clear some bits out of my wardrobe first LOL!).

MuchasSmoochas · 08/06/2024 10:19

All beautiful but my fave is Freemans. Please report back OP!

NeedWineNow · 08/06/2024 10:44

@MuchasSmoochas Will do!
