Having your "colours" done

Has anyone had their "colours" done? If so could you tell me what was the process, did it work and was it value for money?

I had mine done 11yrs ago with House of Colour. It was expensive at around £200 then, I expect it is more expensive now. Along with upselling of makeup and kettlewell clothes (which I didn't buy into). A simple process of colour draping, holding up fabric shades to see which colours make your skin and eyes pop.

I remember looking at the colour wheel and thinking, anything but Autumn, disliked the sludgy browns, khaki and mustard. I loved the winter colours and wore them constantly, lots of black, blues and purples. So was after a confirmation that i was right but no, of course I'm a warm and deep Autumn.

I've fully embraced it and strictly only buy clothing in my shades, I love how simple it is to mix and match all my clothes. I have a full rainbow in my wardrobe compared to the monotone old clothing. All the white gold and silver jewellery, black shoes, coats and bags have been replaced with tan shoes and bags, camel coloured coats and gold jewellery and they all work with dark navy or khaki jeans and green/ beige/ orange/ mustard/ red tops. Shopping is easy as first I look by size and colour then material, style and fit. My hair colour is now brown with honey ombre highlights, I can see why the cool plum hair colour that I loved washed me out. Makeup is another thing, warm shades instead of cool, brown or green eyeliner instead of black etc.

So, yes it has transformed my personal style and I would 100% recommend it.

I've come to the conclusion I'm a neutral. The vein thing never works as I'm a blue/ green when you can see them. I have blue eyes, and reddish hair. I've always thought that I had warm skin but recently had a skin tone analysis that said I was cool.

I think I'm pretty good at knowing what shades suit me . It would be an expensive waste for me.

Hopeandmoss · 02/06/2024 07:58

I had mine done over the internet during Covid and wasn’t impressed. I was a cool winter but looking back at photos of me then I look washed out. There are lots of places online that you can analyse yourself and they all told me I was a soft summer which does suit me.

Fizbosshoes · 02/06/2024 07:59

My DD went recently with friends, I guessed (correctly) what colours she would be. Apparently the stylist mentioned certain colours would highlight/accentuate her (currently very bad) acne ....which I thought was very unreasonable to comment on!

Partridgewell · 02/06/2024 08:00

My mil paid for me to have mine done as a wedding gift 20 years ago. Absolutely brilliant. It has saved me SO much money. Most things in my wardrobe match. Would definitely recommend.

ShinyBandana · 02/06/2024 08:32

My best friend arranged this for my birthday about 20 years ago and it’s been the birthday gift that’s kept on giving! It makes shopping for clothes in shops or online so much easier when you start knowing whether the colour will work on you. My wardrobe is full of the best colours for me and it’s great knowing that my clothes boost how I look.

I also realised last year that I have decorated our home in my colours too!

TheOGCCL · 02/06/2024 10:43

I think some people benefit more from colour analysis than others. If you're a bit borderline or neutral then you can make most things work. I think wearing the right colours is less important on darker skin tones as you carry them better. I think it's pale people who get most benefit and they are often wearing colours that wash them out, black or pastels if an Autumn for example.

Pink v orange and silver v gold is a good way to assess whether you are warm or cool.

I believe HoC is a lot more expensive now. I was assessed 18 years ago by a different method. I do feel it has helped me choose clothes but maybe also boxed me in a bit. Another type that doesn't get the most of colour analysis is someone who doesn't like that! Many people just want to buy and wear what they love, and not be told something is 'wrong'.

I have hormonal adult acne. I know other people can see it when I get a flare up. I don't feel ashamed about it but I do feel self conscious at times when it does look worse. I actually would really value someone truthfully telling me if something/a specific colour accentuated it rather than the pretend 'I don't notice it' comments. How did your daughter feel about that part of the experience?

meetmeatsunset · 02/06/2024 10:50

I did an online assessment a few months ago just for a bit of fun, only for
£35. I feel it was quite accurate in terms of colours I already know suit me.

Pampledample · 02/06/2024 10:55

I found looking at a website like This useful. And then I just looked at the palettes for all the seasons and there was one obvious one with lots of colours I knew that suited me. I then just read all the info in general on that season.

What I found most interesting is the fact that I mostly suit shades that are muted, rather than bright.

It also suggested matte make up - I’ve been trying to look glowy for ages, but since changed to a matte foundation which is def more flattering.

I think

SagaNorensPorche · 02/06/2024 11:15

I've always wanted it done but it's so expensive and not always accurate so that puts me off investing. I think you can get a good indication of your season just by looking at eye pattern then can narrow down from there by trying different colours and make up. So, spokes in eyes point to winter. Starburst / freckles in eyes are autumn but could be spring but both warm seasons. Crypts /petals point to summer and so on.

fernz · 02/06/2024 11:18

I had mine online with Style Me Happy.
It was a great experiment and my colours definitely look best on me and most of them go together. It's saved me from buying things I might like but wouldn't suit me.

Lovelynames123 · 02/06/2024 11:28

A friend paid for me to have my colours done for my birthday years ago, I'm dark haired, dark eyes and olive skin. Apparently I'm a Blue Spring, which means I suit pretty much every colour! Waste of time for me

PashaMinaMio · 02/06/2024 11:30

I’ve just had my colours and separately, my make up done.

Im a “cool” and I’ve been wearing a lot of the “wrong” colours so I need to sort out my wardrobe.

For example I’ve not really drawn to navy but with silver accessories it looks great on me now!

I’ve never been drawn to silver jewellery but now it’s the type I need to look at! Not the shiny polished but the burnished duller silver.

My makeup needed an update and was separately worth doing and great fun. Not sure about the heavier eye brow look but overall it was a lovely experience. I love wearing makeup so I’m recharged and ready to embrace the new!

Ive spent nearly £200 but it’s rare, a treat to myself. I’m not young and don’t drink, smoke or buy takeaways so I justify it that way! Not that self care should need justification! 🙄

Go for it! Save up to do it. You won’t regret it.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 02/06/2024 12:14

I had mine done with Style Me Happy, inexpensive but well worth it. It helps me shop and understand what works. I particularly love that it has made me confident with lipstick and explained why I have never found a nude lipstick that suits me!

FinallyHere · 02/06/2024 13:08

Agree with PP who said some people benefit more than others. My mother and sister always knew what suited them so it didn't make much difference for them. I had it done in '80s when I first started to buy more expensive clothes required at work.

The first two suits I bought looked terrible on me so I decided I needed some help.

I was very lucky with the first consultant I tried. They were able to explain things to me so I really understood. Having my colours done has been Transformational for me. I've stuck pretty closely to it ever since and can now genuinely say there isn't any occasion for which I would think I 'haven't anything to wear'.

I'm regularly complimented on my clothes. I hardly spend any time planning my wardrobe as I hear my friends doing. It is all just effortless and easy. Brilliant.

Impulse purchases and carefully thought out investments, I wear them all over and over again. Cost per wear even the expensive stuff is completely justifiable.

£200! Shock

I had mine done (for the second time) 5 years ago with HOC. It cost almost half of what you paid. I knew I was a winter, but now know I am a jewel winter. The only new colour revelation for me was emerald green, otherwise most of the other colours were the same as 30 years previously.

Springwatch123 · 02/06/2024 13:19

I did an analysis five years ago with ‘Styled by Suzie’ - involved body shape as well as season. It’s been brilliant. I’ve had more compliments since doing it then ever before, even thought I’m overweight and post menopausal. I now wear colours and styles that suit me, and it’s made made shopping alot easier.

Appalonia · 02/06/2024 13:23

Totally worth it, especially if you are paler skinned as a lot of cold, fashionable colours, especially black can really wash you out. I now have a fabulous wardrobe of clothes that suit me and match. I used to wear black all the time and wonder why I looked so ill!😂

Keepingongoing · 02/06/2024 14:03

I did it myself maybe 25 years ago after noticing how awful and washed out I looked in certain colours…powdery blackcurrant and black were both awful.

There was a system based on skin tone which you can tell in daylight holding a piece of white paper next to your wrist. Doing this, my skin is quite yellow although my hair isn’t dark. This led me to ‘warm’ spring or autumn colours, and the spring ones looked too bright on me. My mum had always said I looked good in brown and red which were classic autumn.

Sticking to one season definitely makes saves time and money because all your clothes blend with your chosen neutrals.

Am considering getting a professional analysis done, though, for further refinements and as I’m getting older, I think it’s even more important to wear your best colours. I can often tell when people aren’t wearing good colours for them.

Thank you for this POV.
DD laughed it off, it but it was the first (only) thing she really mentioned. She was really worried beforehand about having to go out without make up because she was very self conscious and I felt (maybe unfairly or wrongly) that it was possibly insensitive to mention it to a teen but appreciate from your post that maybe it is a helpful thing to know.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 02/06/2024 14:40

I'm pretty neutral, and I'm a Soft. I had a tonal analysis from Colour me Beautiful. I tried seasonal analysis before that, but she really struggled to put me in a season! I have colours in my palette that would be in spring, summer or autumn palette. I was pretty aware of my best colours, and yes, I have used them in my house, too (didn't realise, I just chose colours I like) 😂

Deathraystare · 03/06/2024 17:46

@Fizbosshoes
The woman might have sounded rude to your daughter but it was helpful (I think! )and would help her to see what colours would not be good. Although I never suffered with acne, I got the occasional hormonal yellow headed demon on either my lip or above an eyebrow and I noticed that blue toned lipsticks and dark brownish/plum ones really made the spot stand out. I am a warm ivory tone. I think I am Spring. I would be most unhappy if I was Autumn or Summer!

gardenmusic · 03/06/2024 18:58

PashaMinaMio
Where did you have yours done, please?

How do you all find the clothes in the right colours?
I find it really difficult to find anything that fits and is the quality/style that I like.
I wouldn't buy anything in the colours that I know don't suit me, but factoring in 'my' colours makes the buying process nearly impossible!
I am aware of Kettlewell, but the clothes are too thin, you have to layer and layer.

Dryplate · 03/06/2024 19:05

I'm not convinced about the whole "eyes pop" thing and it generally only told me what I already knew, about what colours do/don't suit me, but being given a "pallet" has been brilliant.

It means everything in my wardrobe goes with everything else and makes packing a capsule wardrobe for a trip really easy.
